The instructor will need to have a copy of a Participant's ConsumableBooklet to follow what the student are workingon and copies of the other materials ofthe Data Bankto be familiar with the background material presented therein. Due to the size of the participantbooklet, and inthe interest ofinstructor convenience,it was deemed preferable to bind these sets ofmaterials into separate volumes. with this Instructor's Manual and acopy of a booklet for each participant, a series of activitiescan be carried out which will provide: 1. A rather thorough orientation to typicalsituations facing the local school district administrator. 2. A vehicle on which to basea consideration of major issues to be resolved in programming for exceptional children. 3. Practice, under controlled and safe conditions,in the actual activities demanded in problem-solving inthis field. 4. A chance for both instructor and studentto test and analyze the student's own decision-making behavior. while the Instructor's Manual andParticipant Booklets are sufficient in themselves to permit exposureto major issues in the field, to achievefull benefit of thesimulation as an instructional approach, itis necessary to also have the Data Bank materials available. ELEMENTS OF THE PTSSE BASIC MATERIALS The essential materials required for minimumuse of PTSSE include: THE INSTRUCTOR'S KIT, consisting of fourcomponents: Instructor's Manual This manual offers detailed suggestionsas to. the use of the orientation materials, pre-assessment instrument, student booklets, alternative plans and time schedule options,as well as guidelines regarding key content issues for feedback discussions. Also included are guides for telephone call problem input,role- plays and other group problem-solving tasks which may comprisea total simulation training exercise. Data Bank This material consists of a set of three pamphletsentitled: 1. "Cultural Influences on the Development of Special Education in the Dormit Central Schools"; 2. "Special Services Handbook"; 3. Reference Manual of Best Practices in the Administration of Special Education. This material is necessary for orientation of participants to the simulation process, but since it is not consumed, it can be reused in succeeding training sessions. The Participant's Consumable Booklet This consumable booklet contains instructions to the student, initial orientation material, tear-out response sheets, and the..three sections of currently updated in-basket task material, bound in a format which keeps the problems concealed until the student is instructed to tear open each section for the work sessions. Indices of Performance The "Indices of Performance" are a series of satisfactory solutions to each of the simulation items. Each indite consists of several categories: problem analysis, judgment, decisiveness, educational values, sensitivity, written communication, and organizational ability. 31 GENERAL INSTRUCTIONS The materials comprising PTSSE representan adaptation of theoriginal SEATS Game which has been usedin a variety of different formats and time schedulessince the first materials were produced in 1967. The fifth revision done in 1980 servedas the most immediate reference materialupon which the PTSSEwas based. Some standard methods have been developedas the result of experiences in numerous situationsin which the materials have been used by the author and his colleagues. While the materials areintendedto be sufficiently flexible to permitindividual instructors to establish their own patterns of usage, the procedures suggested by the original SEATSGame have been found to produce good results. The author believes that after extensive pilot testing and evaluation of thesematerials, he, too, can report excellent results. Purchase and Distribution Hopefully, Participant booklets may eventuallybe ordered through Indiana University Press. Personnel Full use of the PTSSE requiresa staffofat least one assistant to the chief instructor at certain time periods within the schedule. For telephone call input, it is probably well to have two persons providing input while another monitors participant activity on the written in-baskets. When participants number fifteen or more, there are certain activities within an ordinary workshop schedule in whichgreater returns will come from dividing into smaller sub-groups,each with a leader (assistant instructor). In any of the short-term intensive formats, it is especially advisable to have assistance, as a six hour day spent leading the activities can prove even more wearing on the instructor than on the participants.

    1 The Deaf Poets Society, Issue 4: May 2017, Crips in Space Guest Editors’ Note by Alice Wong and Sam de Leve Greetings, corporeal crips and non-crips: As guest editors for this special issue of The Deaf Poets Society, we are excited and honored to share the brilliant creations and perspectives offered by contributors to this issue. Crips in Space was conjured by a mundane activity: Sam had reconceptualized their movement on wheels as an analogue to movement in zero-gravity, which in turn sparked speculation about the ways in which crips are particularly suited to life in space. Their tweet about #CripsInSpace went viral when Alice amplified it and encouraged community input. The outpouring of interest from dozens upon dozens of people serves to highlight not only our enduring fascination as a species with space, but also how strongly speculation about the future resonates with d/Deaf and disabled people in particular. As more and more people suggested artmaking around this theme, Alice proposed a collaboration with The Deaf Poets Society. The expertise and interest of The Deaf Poets Society and its editors allowed the burgeoning 2 idea of Crips in Space to come to life here in this issue. We are filled with gratitude for this opportunity and partnership. While space may exist in a vacuum, the idea of Crips in Space did not come from a cultural vacuum: indeed, it can trace its roots to a long history within speculative fiction and within the d/Deaf and disability community. Despite the erasure or diminishment of d/Deafness and disability in major touchstone media, it is far from absent.
