Our need in the future is for flexible and adaptable armed forces properly supported to carry out the most likely expeditionary operations. To create a more sustainable and affordable force structure which better meets these operational requirements we have secured additional resources: the 2004 Spending Review allocated £3.7 billion to defence across the Spending Review period, which represents an average real terms increase of 1.4% a year. -

Following final assembly and flight testing delivered from BAe Dunsfold, Surrey between May 1990 and June 1992; serials batch ZG471 – ZG480. Constructor’s Number P67. 4 Aug 90 Assembly underway; mainplane (s/n 010492) fitted. 28 Aug 90 Taken on RAF charge. 3 Sep 90 First flight Sep 90 Harrier GR 7, with its enhanced night attack operations capability, entered RAF front- line service (with No. IV (AC) Squadron). 5 Nov 90 From BAe Dunsfold to RAF Gutersloh, Germany (only a month after the reunification of East and West Germany); airframe hours 5.00. 5 Dec 90 Flown by Malcolm White from Gutersloh on air-to-air training combat mission against Phantoms. Statistical Series 4 – Equipment Bulletin 4.01 Formations, Vessels & Aircraft Annual: 2014 edition Statistical release Bulletin 4.01 is an annual publication which provides information on the numbers and types of formations, vessels and aircraft of the UK Armed Forces. Published 19 February 2015 This bulletin provides statistics for 2008 to 2014 (at 1 April each year), with the exception of Table 4.01.03 and 4.01.04 which are for 2008 to Issued by: 2013 (at 31 December each year). CHAPTER 4 – FORMATIONS, VESSELS, AIRCRAFT AND VEHICLES OF THE ARMED FORCES INTRODUCTION Formations Table 4.1 shows the number of submarines and ships in the Royal Navy and Royal Fleet Auxiliary, Royal Marine Commando units, squadrons of helicopters and fixed-wing aircraft in the Fleet Air Arm, and Reserve Units. The figures show overall unit numbers only; they do not reflect the level of readiness at which the unit is held which changes throughout the year. The Naval Service website is being reviewed. 8476 new new new 3/11/08 17:45 Page 1 FAA Centenary News - Issue one 100 Years of Naval Aviation In 2009 the Royal Navy will be celebrating a hundred years of Naval Aviation with a programme of events throughout the year highlighting the distinguished history, spirit and professionalism of the Royal Naval Air Service and the Fleet Air Arm and the enduring importance of Naval Air Power to our country’s defence policy. From the early pioneering experiments of intrepid Naval Aviators in wood and fabric bi-planes, hurling themselves from temporary structures on the upper decks of warships, to the challenging demands of modern warfare, the men and aircraft of the Royal Navy’s Air Arm and their courageous, can-do attitude have become legendary. The history of Naval flying is one of the most remarkable stories of the past hundred years and the actual Centenary itself will be celebrated with a birthday fly past over HMS Illustrious on 7 May 2009, the anniversary of the day, in 1909, when the Admiralty placed an order for its first aircraft, His Majesty’s Airship One, ‘The Mayfly’. The ability to rise above the sea and look over the horizon, to stay airborne for long periods and to carry crew and weapons was to be a turning point in naval thinking and the genesis of an exponential development in technology that was to radically shape history. Although the term Fleet Air Arm did not actually come into being until 1924, the first four Naval Aviators completed their flying training in 1911 and the first launch from a Royal Navy battleship was achieved the same year. -
