Tallinn, Estonia & Riga, Latvia TALLINN, ESTONIA & RIGA, LATVIA Tallinn and Riga – 9 days Departure: April 15, 2020 Return: April 23, 2020 On April 17th we see L’ELISIR D’AMORE by Donizetti. It is conducted by Vello Pahn, Risto Joost, and Lauri Sirpin in the direction of Sweedish director George Malvius. On April 19th we see a rarly performed opera THE TSAR’S BRIDE by Juri Alperten, and Kasper Mand. One of the very well know directors from The St. Petersburg Chamber Opera, Yuri Alexandrov is directing. In Tallinn, the beautifully restored medieval old town, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, with distinctive cobblestone streets, boasting Gothic spires, winding cobblestone streets and enchanting architecture. Riga is famous for its Old Town and city center, in which over 800 buildings are of the Art Nouveau style of architecture. The Art Nouveau style involves intricate building facades, with carvings of flowers and mythological creatures, with ornate doorways and windows. We have selected the centrally located hotels, SWISSOTEL, in Tallinn, and the deluxe KEMPINSKI HOTEL in Riga. DEPART FOR TALLINN Depart this evening, aboard any airline of your choice from U.S.A. to Tallinn, Estonia. Dinner and light breakfast, served on the plane. Thursday, April 16. (B,D). TALLINN Upon arriving at the Tallinn airport, take a taxi to the deluxe SWISSOTEL, where we stay four nights. We reimburse you the taxi fare. Briefing, drinks and Gala Welcome dinner at the hotel. Friday, April 17. (B). TALLINN Morning sightseeing to stop by Toompea, and see the Parliament Building, enjoy fantastic views from Harju Hill, wander through Freedom Square and Town Hall Square, and discover romantic courtyards. Afternoon free. This evening we see the opera L’ELISIR D’AMORE by Donizetti, at the Estonia National Opera. Tallinn, located on the shore of the Gulf of Finland was occupied in 1219 by King Valdemar of Denmark. There followed a period of alternating Scandinavian and Tutonic rules. Due to its strategic location, the city became a major trade hub, especially from the 14th to the 16th century, when it grew in importsance as part of the Hanseatic League. Tallinn’s Old Town, is one of the best preserved medieval cities in Europe, and listed as a UNESCO World Heritage sight. Saturday, April 18. (B). TALLINN This morning we walk through Old Town and visit Saint Nicholas church, Saint Mary’s Cathedral, and Alexander Nevsky Cathedral. Afternoon free. Sunday, April 19. (B). TALLINN Today is free to visit KUMU Art Museum, the Museum of Photography, or the Estonian Art Museum.. This afternoon we will see the rarely performed opera THE TSAR’S BRIDE by Rimski Korsakov, at the Estonia National Opera. Monday, April 20. (B). TALLINN - RIGA Today we fly from Tallinn, Estonia to Riga, Latvia. We transfer you to the deluxe centrally located KEMPINSKI HOTEL. Tuesday, April 21. (B). RIGA Morning orientation tour by bus to see how Peter the Great, of Russia, expanded this seaport on the Baltic, and made it into the important trading center, that it is today. Among the sights are Saint Peter’s Church, Riga Castle and the Dome Cathedral. Afternoon free. This evening or the next, we see an opera at the Latvian National Opera. RIGA is a wonderful surprise to many visitors. A big city in feeling and sophistication, she has come to life again after half-a-century of Soviet domination. The moment you walk her streets, you understand why in the 1930s she was known as “The Little Paris of the North.” Perhaps the best indicator of Riga’s cultural strength is that far from old buildings being torn down to make way for high risers, they are being lovingly restored. Almost symbolically, one of the first to be brought back to its former glory, was the Opera House. Wednesday, April 22. (B,D). RIGA Today is free to visit any of the museums nearby, or take photos of some of the exteriors of the largest number of Art Nouveau buildings found anywhere in the world, lining Elizabetes, Alberta, Strelnieku and Rozena Streets. This class will explore the creation of the Russian state, and the foundation of the question of is Russia European or Asian? We will begin with the exploration and settlement of the Vikings in Eastern Europe, which began the genesis of the state known as “Rus’.” That state was integrated into the larger medieval world through a variety of means, from Christianization, to dynastic marriage, and economic ties. However, over the course of the twelfth and thirteenth centuries the creation of the crusading ideal and the arrival of the Mongols began the process of separating Rus’ (becoming Russia) from the rest of Europe. This continued with the creation of power centers in NE Russia, and the transition of the idea of empire from Byzantium at its fall to Muscovy. This story of medieval Russia is a unique one that impacts both the traditional history of medieval Europe, as well as the birth of the first Eurasian empire.     1 History Is Made in the Dark 4: Alexander Nevsky: The Prince, the Filmmaker and the Dictator In May 1937, Sergei Eisenstein was offered the opportunity to make a feature film on one of two figures from Russian history, the folk hero Ivan Susanin (d. 1613) or the mediaeval ruler Alexander Nevsky (1220-1263). He opted for Nevsky. Permission for Eisenstein to proceed with the new project ultimately came from within the Kremlin, with the support of Joseph Stalin himself. The Soviet dictator was something of a cinephile, and he often intervened in Soviet film affairs. This high-level authorisation meant that the USSR’s most renowned filmmaker would have the opportunity to complete his first feature in some eight years, if he could get it through Stalinist Russia’s censorship apparatus. For his part, Eisenstein was prepared to retreat into history for his newest film topic. Movies on contemporary affairs often fell victim to Soviet censors, as Eisenstein had learned all too well a few months earlier when his collectivisation film, Bezhin Meadow (1937), was banned. But because relatively little was known about Nevsky’s life, Eisenstein told a colleague: “Nobody can 1 2 find fault with me. Whatever I do, the historians and the so-called ‘consultants’ [i.e. censors] won’t be able to argue with me”.i What was known about Alexander Nevsky was a mixture of history and legend, but the historical memory that was most relevant to the modern situation was Alexander’s legacy as a diplomat and military leader, defending a key western sector of mediaeval Russia from foreign foes.

    Art Museum of Estonia Kumu Art Museum Press release 2 December 2019 The largest exhibition of works by Estonian female artists will open at the Kumu Art Museum. On Thursday, 5 December at 5 pm, Emancipating Woman in Estonian and Finnish Art will open at the Kumu Art Museum. This is the largest exposition of artworks by Estonian female artists. It sheds light on a great deal of little-known material and establishes a dialogue with the works of Finnish female artists. The exhibition is the result of collaboration with the Ateneum Art Museum. During the Art Museum of Estonia’s 100th year of operation, Kumu has focused on female artists. This exhibition focuses on the changes in the self-awareness and social positions of women that started in the 19th century and are echoed in the activities of female artists, as well as in the way women are depicted. Works by Julie Hagen Schwarz, Sally von Kügelgen, Karin Luts, Natalie Mei, Lydia Mei, Aino Bach, Olga Terri, Maria Wiik, Helene Schjerfbeck, Sigrid Schauman, Elga Sesemann, Ellen Thesleff, Tove Jansson, Tuulikki Pietilä and others will be on display. Starting in the second half of the 20th century, more attention started to be paid to the works of female artists throughout the world. Prior to that, for various historical and social reasons, the works of female artists had often been viewed as secondary. Therefore, far fewer works by female artists than by men were included in art collections or exhibitions. And yet, the biographies and creative paths of many female artists confirm that women have not necessarily been the passive victims of social conditions, but have created opportunities for self- development.

    Eisenstein's "Ivan The Terrible, Part II" as Cultural Artifact Beverly Blois In one of the most famous Russian paintings, Ilya Repin's "Ivan the Terrible with his murdered son," an unkempt and wild-eyed tsar clutches his expiring son, from whose forehead blood pours forth. Lying beside the two men is a large staff with which, moments earlier, Ivan had in a fit of rage struck his heir-apparent a mortal blow. This was a poignant, in fact tragic, moment in the history of Russia because from this event of the year 1581, a line of rulers stretching back to the ninth century effectively came to an end, ushering in a few years later the smutnoe vermia ("time of trouble") the only social crisis in Russian history that bears comparison with the revolution of 1917. Contemporary Russians tell an anekdot about this painting in which an Intourist guide, leading a group of Westerners rapidly through the rooms of the Tretiakov Gallery in Moscow, comes to Repin's canvas, and wishing, as always, to put the best face on things, says, "And here we have famous painting, Ivan the Terrible giving first aid to his son." Objective: to promote the spiritual, moral, Patriotic and aesthetic education of the modern youth. 2. Tasks: - create an environment of healthy creative communication between children's and youth film studios and individual young film enthusiasts; - provide methodological and practical assistance to specialists working in the field of children's and youth film-making, as well as education and upbringing of children and youth; - identify and support gifted children; - identify and support young film enthusiasts and film enthusiasts who make films for children, promote traditional spiritual and moral values, patriotism, and a healthy lifestyle. 3. The organizers of the competition: The festival is co-organized by the Rybinsk diocese of the Russian Orthodox Church and the National copyright holders support Fund (Moscow). The project is being implemented in 2021 using a grant from the President of the Russian Federation for the development of civil society provided by the presidential grants Fund. The festival is supported by the administration of the Yaroslavl region and its subjects, state, commercial and public structures, PIA " Russian chronicle "(Yaroslavl), the center" Sunny " (Rybinsk), the gallery of modern Orthodox art and painting" Under the Holy cover " (Uglich), as well as the media.
