Now more than ever, we need to celebrate the importance of a girl’s voice and this year our theme is “Rise Speak Change.” Every year, the girls we mentor join a supportive community where they discover their voices and the passion to share their stories. The 2017 Girls Write Now Awards champions the leaders who are paving the way for the next generation of young women writers. Today’s brave, new voices are igniting change and evolving the narrative. Girls Write Now has been honored twice by the Nonprofit Excellence Awards as one of New York City’s top ten nonprofits, and twice by the New York City Council as one of the city’s top girl only intiatives. Our girls — 93% high need and 94% girls of color — have performed at Lincoln Center and the United Nations, published original work in Newsweek, Elle, AOL/Huffington Post, Chime for Change and our award-winning anthology, and earned hundreds of Scholastic Art & Writing Awards, while 100% of our seniors went on to college. “Girls Write Now is not simply ‘a program for girls,’ but a community of leaders who better the world.
