THE SHARED INFLUENCES and CHARACTERISTICS of JAZZ FUSION and PROGRESSIVE ROCK by JOSEPH BLUNK B.M.E., Illinois State University, 2014
COMMON GROUND: THE SHARED INFLUENCES AND CHARACTERISTICS OF JAZZ FUSION AND PROGRESSIVE ROCK by JOSEPH BLUNK B.M.E., Illinois State University, 2014 A thesis submitted to the Faculty of the Graduate School of the University of Colorado in partial fulfillment of the requirement for the degree of Master in Jazz Performance and Pedagogy Department of Music 2020 Abstract Blunk, Joseph Michael (M.M., Jazz Performance and Pedagogy) Common Ground: The Shared Influences and Characteristics of Jazz Fusion and Progressive Rock Thesis directed by Dr. John Gunther In the late 1960s through the 1970s, two new genres of music emerged: jazz fusion and progressive rock. Though typically thought of as two distinct styles, both share common influences and stylistic characteristics. This thesis examines the emergence of both genres, identifies stylistic traits and influences, and analyzes the artistic output of eight different groups: Return to Forever, Mahavishnu Orchestra, Miles Davis’s electric ensembles, Tony Williams Lifetime, Yes, King Crimson, Gentle Giant, and Soft Machine. Through qualitative listenings of each group’s musical output, comparisons between genres or groups focus on instances of one genre crossing over into the other. Though many examples of crossing over are identified, the examples used do not necessitate the creation of a new genre label, nor do they demonstrate the need for both genres to be combined into one. iii Contents Introduction………………………………………………………………………………… 1 Part One: The Emergence of Jazz………………………………………………………….. 3 Part Two: The Emergence of Progressive………………………………………………….. 10 Part Three: Musical Crossings Between Jazz Fusion and Progressive Rock…………….... 16 Part Four: Conclusion, Genre Boundaries and Commonalities……………………………. 40 Bibliography………………………………………………………………………………. -

FAT – Fabulous Austrian Trio
"Maybe it's the inevitable wisdom of age, with Machacek now in his early 40s, but as impressive as "Living the Dream" is, and as much as it fits comfortably in his overall discography, it's the album where, despite its many twists and turns, harmonic, melodic and rhythmic surprises, and the evolving chemistry of FAT, it's also the album where all three musicians come together with a sense of nothing left to prove. And it's that very comfort level with each other, and that very feeling of maturity that makes "Living the Dream" an even better record than the superb "FAT"...and one of the very best in Machacek's growing discography." John Kelman/AllAboutJazz "Alex Machacek's music starts where other music ends" John McLaughlin's reaction to "[sic]" Alex Europareisen wurden zur Lebenserhaltungsmaßnahme für das Trio und so reifte genug Material für das erste Album der Band “FAT” (2010). -

CRACCUM: JULY Xi>Th 1973 Page 2
CRACCUM: JULY Xi>th 1973 Page 2 So long the kiwi ethos of equality before the bottle has existed that one had to be a foreigner or a wowser to question its truth. Kiwidom was a land where everybody was some body, a fairy castle myth for the worlds ends’ inno cents. But now in our belated maturity we are beginning to question the basic things of who we are and where we are going. Thus when we strike out on our own, in a symbolic act like sending the frigate to Muroroa it's strange that Drake’s ghost still haunts our action. Still perhaps we Kiwis are going to be chivalrous swashbucklers, all for one and one for all, and full circle we emerge to maturity by going back to the gunboat diplomacy of Pax Brittanica. Jason Jägel La Machine Molle February 7 - March 27, 2020 Opening Reception Friday February 7, 6-9Pm
JASON JÄGEL LA MACHINE MOLLE FEBRUARY 7 - MARCH 27, 2020 OPENING RECEPTION FRIDAY FEBRUARY 7, 6-9PM Gallery 16 is pleased to welcome artist Jason Jägel for his second solo exhibition with the gallery, La Machine Molle. Jägel presents a new series of paintings, works on paper and sculptures. There will be an opening reception for the artist on Friday, February 7th, from 6-9pm. La Machine Molle is French for The Soft Machine, the title of a 1961 cut-up novel by American author William S. Burroughs, as well as the name of seminal Canterbury scene band, Soft Machine. After being kicked out of his own band (Soft Machine), Robert Wyatt started a new band which he named Matching Mole, a linguistic pun on the French name for Soft Machine. The images in a new series of paintings refer to the 1972 live performance of Wyatt’s group on the French television program Rockenstock. Jägel broad admiration for Wyatt includes his use of everyday speech, wry humor, and self-referential elements in his lyrics. There is a kinship in the way both Jägel and Wyatt bring together elements of improvisation and lyrical narrative. In his own unique and poetic way, Jason Jägel's work cultivates a strong improvisational component, born out of a form of autobiographical fiction, his love of music, comics, and literary fiction. In the words of Kevin Killian, he is an “ace raconteur” and, above all, Jägel's work tells a story. His compositions often appear as fragments where experiences, dreams, people, places, individual narratives and past experiences intersect and intertwine to create open-ended, conversational stories full of rhythm and flow. -
The Korean Wave As a Localizing Process: Nation As a Global Actor in Cultural Production
THE KOREAN WAVE AS A LOCALIZING PROCESS: NATION AS A GLOBAL ACTOR IN CULTURAL PRODUCTION A Dissertation Submitted to the Temple University Graduate Board In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY by Ju Oak Kim May 2016 Examining Committee Members: Fabienne Darling-Wolf, Advisory Chair, Department of Journalism Nancy Morris, Professor, Department of Media Studies and Production Patrick Murphy, Associate Professor, Department of Media Studies and Production Dal Yong Jin, Associate Professor, School of Communication, Simon Fraser University © Copyright 2016 by Ju Oak Kim All Rights Reserved ii ABSTRACT This dissertation research examines the Korean Wave phenomenon as a social practice of globalization, in which state actors have promoted the transnational expansion of Korean popular culture through creating trans-local hybridization in popular content and intra-regional connections in the production system. This research focused on how three agencies – the government, public broadcasting, and the culture industry – have negotiated their relationships in the process of globalization, and how the power dynamics of these three production sectors have been influenced by Korean society’s politics, economy, geography, and culture. The importance of the national media system was identified in the (re)production of the Korean Wave phenomenon by examining how public broadcasting-centered media ecology has control over the development of the popular music culture within Korean society. The Korean Broadcasting System (KBS)’s weekly show, Music Bank, was the subject of analysis regarding changes in the culture of media production in the phase of globalization. In-depth interviews with media professionals and consumers who became involved in the show production were conducted in order to grasp the patterns that Korean television has generated in the global expansion of local cultural practices. -

Founder & Chairman of Electro Scan Inc
CHUCK HANSEN Founder & Chairman of Electro Scan Inc. Chuck Hansen has a pretty cool life outside of trenchless technology. He has played his saxophone on stage with the likes of Tower of Power, Huey Lewis, Todd Rundgren, to name a few. His passion for rock n’ roll music runs deep — rooted in his childhood and in full bloom as an adult. He plays live music with rock stars, as well as owns a recording studio, where he records his own music (he’s recorded 24 CDs) in addition to other artists. Hansen is known in trenchless circles as the founder and chairman of Electro Scan Inc. (2011) and was founder of Hansen Information Technologies (1983), which developed asset management systems for water and sewer agencies. Electro Scan is an alternative to CCTV cameras to certify a trenchless lining and rehab projects as “leak-free.” He’s been playing music for more than 50 years, first learning the clarinet from his brother in the second grade then switching to the big baritone sax in the eighth grade. By high school, he was tabbed to play in the famous Monterey Jazz Festival’s All-Star Band competition, allowing him to take the stage with the likes of Dizzy Gilliespe, Louis Belson and Clark Terry. He went on to play in the U.C. Berkeley Jazz Band. Today, Hansen plays, in addition to the baritone sax, the bass sax and the contrabass sax. His “real world” job sometimes inhibits when he can play but he says he does each with as much passion and gusto as he can; each requires such enthusiasm and commitment to be successful, he says. -
THE ORCHESTRA in BILBAO by Victor Barba Gomez
THE ORCHESTRA IN BILBAO by Victor Barba Gomez Last August 27th, the band played in Bilbao City situated in the North of Spain. It was the Festivities of the city, called ASTE NAGUSIA, and every day of the week were concerts in the city, in different stages and THE ORCHESTRA played in the main stage, in front of almost 8.000 people. This show was the main of the week, closing the Festivities. After the Fireworks, people were arriving to enjoy the wonderful sound of the guys that began at 12.00 in the night in a big stage with two screens. In charge of the sound was Dennis with the local crew. It was the first time that the band was playing in Bilbao, but not for Mik, who played in 1975 with ELO in his first tour in Spain. Before the sound check, the three vocalists Eric, Hux and Glen, were rehearsing together. While the band was in the rehearsals, some fans and public were approaching the stage to see the band, as a prelude of the massive attendance that later came to the show. There were press, TV cameras photographs, waiting the magic moment Opening the show with the intro and Twilight, soon the audience was handed over to the band’s songs. Glen, in Basque language, said hello to the attendance. The audience thanked this gesture. After Twilight, came All Over the World, R&R is King, Evil Woman, Sweet Talking Woman, Hold on Tight, Mama Belle, Showdown and Rockaria. Then was moment for the Intros, and Hux presented the members of the band. -
