The legal adviser indicated that there are other ethnic minorities, but not many Albanians, living in Vojvodina (Helsinki Committee for Human Rights in Serbia 28 Feb. 2005). In Sandzak, "Bosnians, not Albanians" are the main minority group (ibid.). Country Reports 2004 provides further details on the ethnic composition of the two regions: "In Vojvodina, the Hungarian minority constituted approximately 15 percent of the population, and many regional political offices were held by ethnic Hungarians. In the Sandzak, Bosniaks controlled the municipal governments of Novi Pazar, Tutin, and Sjenica, and Prijepolje". (28 Feb. 2005 Sec. 3) The March 2003 report to the Council of Europe by the Voivodina Center for Human Rights did not include ethnic Albanians in Voivodina as one of the region's minorities, which include Croats, Hungarians, Roma, Romanians, Ruthenians and Slovaks. An article in Le Courrier des Balkans stated that Vojvodina had a record of non-violent cohabitation among its close to 30 different minorities, but that between 2003 and 2004 ethnic incidents had occurred, mostly directed at Croats and Hungarians (25 Sept. -

Three thematic workshops were held during the project with 10-15 experts in the team of working group . Experts delegated from Each DARIF state, EU Agencies such as Europol, FRONTEX, Aquapol and the EU Border Assistance Mission (EUBAM) in Moldova and Ukraine . They had experiences in the areas of organising and synchronizing joint law enforcement operations and actions. Summary of the technical workshops: • Joint Operations (JO’s) should be multi-purpose operations • JO’s should focus on documents of seamen, illegal immigration, searching of ships but also to tackle against environmental pollution. -

The Yugoslav language policy advocated a polycentric model of linguistic unity that strived for equal representation of the languages of the peoples (Serbo-Croatian, Macedonian and Slovenian), ethnicities (ethnic minorities) and ethnic groups, as well as both scripts (Latin and Cyrillic). Serbo-Croatian, spoken by 73% of people in Yugoslavia, was divided into the eastern and the western variety and two standard language expressions: Bosnian and Montenegrin. One linguistic system had sociolinguistic subsystems or varieties which functioned and developed in different socio-political, historical, religious and other circumstances. With the disintegration of Yugoslavia, the aforementioned sociolinguistic subsystems became standard languages (one linguistic system brought forth four political languages). We will describe the linguistic circumstances of the newly formed countries after 1991 in Croatia, Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Montenegro. -

Subotica Intercultural Profile Background The Kosztolányi Dezső Theatre describes Subotica as at ‘the entrance to the European Union, and the limit to the Balkan region’ and as ‘an open-minded city, full of possibilities’. In the past 150 years it has been part of the Austro-Hungarian empire, Hungary (twice), the two manifestations of Yugoslavia and its successor states, and now Serbia. Roads out of the city lead variously to Hungary, Romania, Croatia and Bosnia-Herzegovina, connecting hundreds of thousands of people of various nationalities and religions, immigrants and emigrants, relatives and mixed marriages. Subotica has an unusual, in some ways unique, ambience. One explanation of the derivation of its Hungarian name, Sabatka, is that it means ‘free place’ and Subotica’s citizens did buy their freedom in the 18 th century from Maria Theresa of Austria. This has allowed of a history of individual liberty (and entrepreneurship) more conducive to the idea of intercultural tolerance than collectivistic, nationalistic ideologies. Thus the city always voted for opposition parties during the Milošević years and the nationalistic parties are barely represented in the City Assembly. The Subotica-born writer Danilo Kiš encapsulated the multi-ethnic city thus: ‘Subotica: Kosztolányi, synagogue, baroque town hall … multilingualism’. The municipality has three official languages: Hungarian, Serbian and Croatian—although the latter two have their common root in Serbo-Croat. The demographic breakdown of Subotica is: Hungarians 38.5 per cent, Serbs 24.1, Croats 11.2, Bunjevci 11.0 per cent and 17.2 per cent comprising self- defined Yugoslavs, Montenegrins, Roma, Albanians, Ruthenians and others. -

ENIkő BOLLOBÁS S Á B This collection brings together critical studies framed by several theo- retical perspectives, including performative, intersubjective, postmod- ern, feminist, tropological, and rhetorical. The prose texts have been READING selected in such a way that they are best interpreted through these the- oretical approaches. Specifically, they turn on processes whereby the (gendered) subjects are performatively constructed, while characters, THROUGH often informed by rhetorical processes and structures, are formed via NIKő BOLLO their interactions with others. The poetic texts are interpreted within E the frames of poetological paradigms that problematize referentiality, THEORY self-expressivity, and performativity. The approach of “reading through theory” might be called ekphrastic, STUDIES IN THEORY-frAMED INTERPRETATION where theory acts as a filter through which we read literature. Theory OF THE LITERARY TEXT is put in the service of interpretation, while its use or usefulness is also tested in the process of critical reading. In other words, not only does the text demand the theory, but also the theory demands the text. The first chapter presents an in-depth overview of the history of the Croatian language, its relationship to Serbo-Croatian, its dialect groups and pronunciation variants, and general phonology. The second chapter explains the difference between various types of prosodic prominence and describes systems of pitch accent in various languages from different parts of the world: Yucatec Maya, Lithuanian and Limburgian. Following is a detailed account of the history of tone in Serbo-Croatian and Croatian, the specifics of its tonal system, intonational phonology and finally, a review of the most prominent phonetic investigations of tone in that language. The focal point of this dissertation is a production experiment, in which ten native speakers of Croatian from the region of Slavonia were recorded. The material recorded included a diverse selection of monosyllabic, bisyllabic, trisyllabic and quadrisyllabic words, containing all four accents of standard Croatian: short falling, long falling, short rising and long rising. Each target word was spoken in initial, medial and final positions of natural Croatian sentences. -

INTRODUCTION Voïvodina, a region in Northern Serbia, is the southern part of the Pannonian plane, bordering with Croatia on the west, Romania on the east and Hungary to the north. The surface area is 21,506 km2, almost as large as Slovenia, with two million inhabitants of some twenty different nationalities. At the end of the IXth century, the Hungarians colonised Voïvodina, which became part of the Kingdom of Hungary and stayed so until the Turkish occupation in 1529. When the latter ended at the turn of the XVII-XVIIIth centuries, Voïvodina was part of the Kingdom of Hungary until 1918. The region's inter-ethnic complexity is rooted in the XVIIIth century Habsburg policy of repopulation, which brought in people from the various nationalities that made up their empire at the time: Serbians fleeing Ottoman rule, Croatians, Hungarians, Germans, Slovaks, Ruthenes, etc. The events of 1848-49 had repercussions in Voïvodina, which was transformed into a region enjoying a modicum of autonomy, with the Emperor François-Joseph bearing the title Voïvode. It was then joined to Hungary in 1860, and then the Austro-Hungarian empire in 1867. Within the Compromise of 1867, Austria and Hungary undertook to treat all the various nationalities on an equal basis, and recognised the equality of all the empire's languages in schools, the administration and public life. -

Demarcated area (b) Single document heading affected: Demarcated geographical area (c) Reasons: — The Wine Community Council of the Kunság Region (Kunsági Borvidék Hegyközségi Tanácsa) amended the product specification for the ‘Kunság/Kunsági’ PDO. The areas of the municipalities of Kömpöc, Petőfiszállás, Pálmonostora and Újszilvás classified as Class I and II according to the vineyard cadastre of wine-producing regions were added to the demarcated area. The change affects the demarcated area in the product specification for the ‘Duna/Dunai’ PDO and has been included in this application. The characteristics of the areas included in the vineyard cadastre correspond to the demarcated area of the ‘Duna/Dunai’ PDO. Vine-growing is one of the traditional economic activities of local inhabitants. The classification of the wine region and the possibility to produce the ‘Duna/Dunai’ PDO generates significant employment and income in these municipalities and contributes greatly towards the local tourism industry.
