THRILL RIDE - THE SCIENCE OF FUN a SONY PICTURES CLASSICS release Running time: 40 minutes Synopsis Sony Pictures Classics release of THRILL RIDE-THE SCIENCE OF FUN is a white- knuckle adventure that takes full advantage of the power of large format films. Filmed in the 70mm, 15-perforation format developed by the IMAX Corporation, and projected on a screen more than six stories tall, the film puts every member of the audience in the front seat of some of the wildest rides ever created. The ultimate ride film, "THRILL RIDE" not only traces the history of rides, past and present but also details how the development of the motion simulator ride has become one of the most exciting innovations in recent film history. Directed by Ben Stassen and produced by Charlotte Huggins in conjunction with New Wave International, "THRILL RIDE" takes the audience on rides that some viewers would never dare to attempt, including trips on Big Shot at the Stratosphere, Las Vegas and the rollercoasters Kumba and Montu, located at Busch Gardens, Tampa, Florida. New Wave International was founded by Stassen, who is also a renowned expert in the field of computer graphics imagery (CGI). The film shows that the possibilities for thrill making are endless and only limited by the imagination or the capabilities of a computer workstation. "THRILL RIDE-THE SCIENCE OF FUN" shows how ride film animators use CGI by first "constructing" a wire frame or skeleton version of the ride on a computer screen. Higher resolution textures and colors are added to the environment along with lighting and other atmospheric effects to heighten the illusion of reality. -

Landmarks Preservation Commission July 12, 1988; Designation List 206 LP-1636 THE CYCLONE, 834 Surf Avenue at West 10th Street, Brooklyn. Built 1927. Inventor Harry c. Baker. Engineer Vernon Keenan. Landmark Site: Borough of Brooklyn Tax Map Block 8697, Lot 4 in part consisting of the land on which the described improvement is situated. On September 15, 1987, the Landmarks Preservation Commission held a public hearing on the proposed designation as a Landmark of the cyclone and the proposed designation of the related Landmark Site (Item No. 12). The hearing had been duly advertised in accordance with the provisions of law. Six witnesses spoke in favor of designation, including the ride's owner, whose support was given dependant upon his ability to perform routine repair and maintenance. One witness spoke in opposition to designation. The Commission has received many letters in favor of designation. DESCRIPTION AND ANALYSIS Summary Descended from the ice slides enjoyed in eighteenth-century Russia, through the many changes incorporated by French and American inventors, the Cyclone has been one of our country's premier roller coasters since its construction in 1927. Designed by engineer Vernon Keenan and built by noted amusement ride inventor Harry C. Baker for Jack and Irving Rosenthal, the Cyclone belongs to an increasingly rare group of wood-track coasters; modern building codes make it irreplaceable. The design of its twister-type circuit and the enormous weight of the cars allow the trains to travel on their own momentum after being carried up to the first plunge by mechanical means. Now part of Astroland amusement park, the Cyclone is not only a well recognized feature of Coney Island, where the first "modern" coaster was built in 1884, but, sadly, is the only roller coaster still operating there. -

City officials then leased the site to the Italian ride manufacturer Zamperla USA, which plans to have several new rides and attractions in place by this summer—com- plementing existing attractions such as the Cyclone, Deno’s Wonder Wheel Park, Coney Island USA and the New York Aquarium. These are incredibly welcome developments for the “People’s Playground” after a turbulent couple of years in which one of the area’s two remaining amusement parks, Astroland, and a handful of other long-time attractions lost their leases and had to shut down. It’s now critical to continue this mo- mentum through the upcoming summer. After years of setbacks and nega- tive press reports, a truly successful 2010 season could re-establish Coney Island as a thriving outdoor entertainment destination, potentially leading to more infrastructure investment, the expansion of the amusement area and a greater amount of programming in the future. But making the 2010 season a success will require more than just a new amusement operator. City officials and other stakeholders will have to ad- dress several of the entrenched problems that have long undermined the area’s appeal. -

Overview From its famed boardwalk, to the iconic Wonder Wheel, Cyclone, and Parachute Jump, to the once bustling midways along Surf Avenue and the Bowery, Coney Island’s legendary status as the world’s greatest urban amusement park lives in all of our memories. But over the years, this once vibrant area has shrunk and deteriorated, and is limited today to one block of seasonal amusements and a few remaining active frontages along Surf Avenue. The Department of City Planning, in partnership with the New York City Economic Development Corporation (EDC), the Department of Parks and Recreation (DPR) and the Department of Housing Preservation and Development (HPD), has developed a comprehensive plan that will establish a framework for the revitalization of the Coney Island amusement area and the surrounding blocks. The plan builds upon the few remaining amusements to create a 27-acre amusement and entertainment district that will reestablish Coney Island as a year-round, open and accessible amusement destination. Outside of the amusement area, the plan provides new housing opportunities, including affordable housing, and neighborhood services. The plan covers 19 blocks bounded by the New York Aquarium to the east, West 24th View the presentation Street to the west, Mermaid Avenue to the north and the Riegelmann Boardwalk to the south. The plan seeks to: Facilitate the development of a vibrant year round, 27-acre urban amusement and entertainment district by catalyzing a variety of new indoor and outdoor amusement, entertainment, and complimentary uses, and laying the groundwork for the development of a 12-acre urban amusement park preserving and expanding amusement uses in their historic boardwalk location in perpetuity; Rezoning Area Boundary View a larger image. -

Epilogue 1941—Present By BARBARA LA ROCCO ABOUT A WEEK before A Maritime History of New York was re- leased the United States entered the Second World War. Between Pearl Harbor and VJ-Day, more than three million troops and over 63 million tons of supplies and materials shipped overseas through the Port. The Port of New York, really eleven ports in one, boasted a devel- oped shoreline of over 650 miles comprising the waterfronts of five boroughs of New York City and seven cities on the New Jersey side. The Port included 600 individual ship anchorages, some 1,800 docks, piers, and wharves of every conceivable size which gave access to over a thousand warehouses, and a complex system of car floats, lighters, rail and bridge networks. Over 575 tugboats worked the Port waters. Port operations employed some 25,000 longshoremen and an additional 400,000 other workers.* Ships of every conceivable type were needed for troop transport and supply carriers. On June 6, 1941, the U.S. Coast Guard seized 84 vessels of foreign registry in American ports under the Ship Requisition Act. To meet the demand for ships large numbers of mass-produced freight- ers and transports, called Liberty ships were constructed by a civilian workforce using pre-fabricated parts and the relatively new technique of welding. The Liberty ship, adapted by New York naval architects Gibbs & Cox from an old British tramp ship, was the largest civilian- 262 EPILOGUE 1941 - PRESENT 263 made war ship. The assembly-line production methods were later used to build 400 Victory ships (VC2)—the Liberty ship’s successor. -

Every May, Canobie sponsors a PHYSICS DAY for high school students. This educational experience is designed for older students who test and apply scientific theories on our major thrill rides. The INTERACTIVE CLASSROOM is also a day dedicated to teaching how principles of science are applied to amusement park rides. This day is geared towards the middle school grades. Both days feature demonstrations and exhibits in addition to the lessons learned on the rides. Still, requests for additional learning guides beyond those previously produced continued. It is to this need that Canobie Lake Park Corporation proudly responds with “ELEMENTS OF FUN!” Your comments are welcomed, since this program’s raison d’être is the educational enrichment of your students. The site was formerly an island, but became partially connected to the mainland by landfill. Coney Island is possibly best known as the site of amusement parks and a major resort that reached their peak during the first half of the 20th century. It declined in popularity after World War II and endured years of neglect. In recent years, the area has seen the Coney Island peninsula from the air opening of MCU Park and has become home to the minor league baseball team the Brooklyn Cyclones. The neighborhood of the same name is a community of 60,000 people in the western part of the peninsula, with Sea Gate to its west, Brighton Beach and Manhattan Beach to its east, and Gravesend to the north. We'll see the NLM site, Fort Wadsworth at Battery Weed, Coney Island Light, West Bank, Old Orchard site, Romer Shoal, Great Beds, Prince's Bay Light, Staten Island Range Light, Elm Tree Light, Robin's Reef, and the most famous lighthouse in the world, the Statue of Liberty! This season we will be yachting on the Majestic Princess which features climate-controlled interior spaces with large windows as well as amble outdoor space to fully enjoy the "yachting experience." As for food items, the Majestic Princess offers lunch and snack items as well as a bar for "adult beverages." We're happy to report that this yacht also features a wireless sound system for all decks! Refreshments are available on board but feel free to bring your own snacks. Tickets are $60 Adults, $40 Children (under 10yrs.), $50 Military and Seniors (62+).
