Historic Amusement Parks and Fairground Rides Introductions to Heritage Assets Summary Historic England’s Introductions to Heritage Assets (IHAs) are accessible, authoritative, illustrated summaries of what we know about specific types of archaeological site, building, landscape or marine asset. Typically they deal with subjects which lack such a summary. This can either be where the literature is dauntingly voluminous, or alternatively where little has been written. Most often it is the latter, and many IHAs bring understanding of site or building types which are neglected or little understood. Many of these are what might be thought of as ‘new heritage’, that is they date from after the Second World War. With origins that can be traced to annual fairs and 18th-century pleasure grounds, and much influenced by America’s Coney Island amusement park of the 1890s, England has one of the finest amusement park and fairground ride heritages in the world. A surprising amount survives today. The most notable site is Blackpool Pleasure Beach, in Lancashire, which has an unrivalled heritage of pre-1939 fairground rides. Other early survivals in England include scenic railways at Margate and Great Yarmouth, and water splash rides in parks at Kettering, Kingston-upon-Hull and Scarborough that date from the 1920s. The Concept of Amusement Parks Goes Back Farther Than You Would Think. from 1550-1700, “Pleasure Gardens”, As They Were First Called, Began to Appear in Europe
April 2007 by Mike Prero The concept of Amusement Parks goes back farther than you would think. From 1550-1700, “Pleasure Gardens”, as they were first called, began to appear in Europe. These were the first permanent areas set aside specifically for outdoor entertainment. The attractions included fountains, flower gardens, bowling, games, music, dancing, staged spectacles and a few primitive amusement rides. In 1650, large ice slides, supported by heavy timbers, became popular as a wintertime diversion in Russia. Small wooden sleds used iron runners to glide down hills in St. Petersburg were quite elaborate. These simple amusements were the forerunners of today’s roller coasters. In 1846, the first looping gravity railway was exhibited at Frascati Gardens, in Paris, France. The French called the device Chemin de Centrifuge. In 1875, Coney Island, Brooklyn, NY, with the completion of the first railroad to it, rapidly became popular as a seaside resort. The attractions included Cabaret entertainment, Vaudeville acts, Melodramas, Fortune tellers, games, and rides such as small carousels. In 1884, LaMarcus A. Thompson introduced his Switchback Gravity Pleasure Railway at Coney Island, the first true roller coaster in America. Chicago’s Columbian Exposition, in 1893, introduced the famous George Ferris Giant Wheel. A true wonder of then modern world. Also introduced at the Columbian Exposition was the Midway Plaisance (or White City Midway). The ornate building facades and brilliant electric lights dictated amusement park design for the next 60 years. Chutes Park in Chicago opened in 1894, becoming the first amusement park to be enclosed and charge admission. After relocating in 1896, Chutes Park closed in 1908. -

Name Period A Date Exercise 29 Coney Island Steeplechase Park Opens The first of the great Coney Island parks, Steeplechase Park, was the work of George C. Tilyou, and it grew from the sprig of envy. A local since childhood and proprietor of the Surf Theater at Coney Island, Tilyou visited the 1893 Columbian Exposition in Chicago on his honeymoon and was awestruck by the Ferris Wheel, which debuted there. Unable to procure the wheel for himself1, as it had already been sold, he contracted the Pennsylvania Steel Company to build another one expressly for him. Tilyou's Ferris Wheel rose from a plot of land on the Bowery and West Eighth Street, near Culver's Iron Tower. After covering it with incandescent lights and billing it as the largest in the world (though this claim was plainly untrue), he had his sister Kathryn sit behind the cash register wearing their mother's diamond necklace. The Ferris Wheel opened for business in the spring of 1894 and paid for itself within a few weeks. Although Tilyou owned a number of other rides, they were scattered around Coney Island until 1895, when Captain Paul Boyton inaugurated his enclosed Sea-Lion Park. Taking that as his cue, Tilyou opened Steeplechase Park, with its leering "funny face" logo, on a 15-acre plot of oceanfront land and began looking for attractions to fill it. Since horse racing was easily the most popular diversion at Coney Island, Tilyou procured a mechanical race course, devised by the British inventor J.W. -

1 Risky Enterprise: Stunts and value in public life of late nineteenth-century New York Kirstin Smith Submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements of the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy 2 Abstract This thesis analyses stunts in the public life of late nineteenth-century New York, where ‘stunt’ developed as a slang term. Addressing stunts as a performative and discursive practice, I investigate stunts in popular newspapers, sports, politics and protest and, to a lesser extent, theatre and film. Each chapter focuses on one form of stunt: bridge jumping, extreme walking contests, a new genre of reporting called ‘stunt journalism’, and cycling feats. Joseph Pulitzer’s popular newspaper, the World, is the primary research archive, supported by analysis of other newspapers and periodicals, vaudeville scripts, films, manuals and works of fiction. The driving question is: how did stunts in public life enact conceptions of value? I contextualise stunts in a ‘crisis of value’ concerning industrialisation, secularisation, recessions, the currency crisis, increased entry of women into remunerative work, immigration, and racialised anxieties about consumption and degeneration. I examine the ways in which ‘stunt’ connotes devaluation, suggesting a degraded form of politics, art or sport, and examine how such cultural hierarchies intersect with gender, race and class. The critical framework draws on Theatre and Performance Studies theorisations of precarity and liveness. I argue that stunts aestheticised everyday precarity and made it visible, raising ethical questions about the value of human life and death, and the increasingly interdependent nature of urban society. Stunts took entrepreneurial idealisations of risk and autoproduction to extreme, constructing identity as commodity. -

Little Bobby Missoula is going to turn ten tomorrow and his parents have promised to take him to Outlandish Adventures, an amusement park that Bobby has seen advertised on television. As Bobby drifts off to sleep, he begins to dream about the fun that he will have on his birthday. He dreams about the smell of cotton candy and the yells of carnies soliciting people in to play their games, but most of all, he dreams about the Lightning Bolt - the tallest, fastest, and scariest roller coaster that little Bobby has ever seen. In his dream, the Lightning Bolt whips Bobby around sharp angles, through upside down loops so close to water that Bobby’s hair and face get wet, down vertical descents at speeds over 100 miles per hour, and finally to an abrupt stop where Bobby rushes to the end of the line to do it all over again. As Bobby walks into the kitchen the next morning, he sees his parents watching a news report on the television. He hears the reporter say, “This just in! A new statistical report suggests that 1 in 25 million people are seriously injured while riding roller coasters. Legislative initiatives blame state regulation for what at least one representative considers a dangerously high risk of injury and call for the federal government to take control.” Bobby’s parents consider the report, but realize that many activities, like riding in a car or on a bicycle, present some risk of injury. -

Landmarks Preservation Commission January 11, 2011, Designation List 437 LP- 2410 CHILDS RESTAURANT BUILDING, 1208 Surf Avenue (aka 1202-1212 Surf Avenue, 3002- 3014 West 12th Street), Brooklyn. Built 1917; John C. Westervelt, architect. Landmark Site: Borough of Brooklyn Tax Map Block 8694 Lot 18. On March 23, 2010 the Landmarks Preservation Commission held a public hearing on the proposed designation as a Landmark of the Childs Restaurant Building, and the proposed designation of the related Landmark Site (Item No.5).The hearing had been duly advertised in accordance with the provisions of law. There were 10 speakers in favor of designation, including representatives of Councilmember Dominic Recchia, Coney Island USA, Save Coney Island, Coney Island History Project, the Municipal Art Society, the Landmarks Conservancy, the Historic Districts Council, and the architect for the building. There were no speakers opposed to designation. The Commission has received more than 60 letters and emails in support of designation. Summary The Childs Restaurant Building on Surf Avenue in Coney Island was the first restaurant built for this well-known chain in Coney Island, at a time when the area was changing from its somewhat seedy aura of summer amusements to a wholesome, family resort that could be enjoyed year-round. The Childs Restaurant chain, begun in 1889, developed as small luncheonettes that catered to working people, where one could find decent meals for a reasonable price in a clean environment. As such, it was the perfect type of establishment for the “new Coney Island.” This building was constructed in 1917 in West Brighton near the terminus of the Prospect Park and Coney Island Railway line and close by many of the most famous amusements of the area. -

Steeplechase Amusement Co., Inc., 1 is, on its face, also one of the silliest in the casebooks.2 The case, which involves a negligence suit brought by an amusement park patron after he fell and broke his knee on a ride, is quite slight. It is certainly not a doctrinal blockbuster like MacPherson v. Buick Motor Co., 3 Escola v. Coca Cola Bottling Co. of Fresno,4 Palsgraf v. Long Island Railroad, Co., 5 or Sindell v.
