Abtract: Water strider (Gerris marginatus) is one of the aquatic insects that can be used as bio-indicators of water. However, the research conducted by utilizing water strider as bio-indicators of pollution in freshwater are caused by pollutants from detergents and artificial textile color have not been done. The purpose of this study was to determine the concentration of detergents and artificial textile color which can be deadly water strider (Gerris marginatus) based on the principle LC50-24 hours. This study was designed in two factors, detergent and artificial textile color. There were four levels of detergent concentrations: 0 ppm, 3 ppm, 6 ppm and 9 ppm, as well as four levels artificial textile color concentrations: 0 ppm, 15 ppm, 30 ppm, and 45 ppm. This study designed in 4x4 factorial and randomized block design (RBD). The results of Probit analysis showed that 50% of water striders died within 24 hours (LC50-24 hours) when treated with the concentration of 4.33 ppm detergent or 33.49 ppm artificial textile color. The overall aim was to assess the effects of spatial heterogeneity on factors controlling the distribution and relative abundance of gerrid species. The relationships among temperature, population dynamics and habitat use were investigated. From a regional perspective, spatial heterogeneity allows species population dynamics to converge in time while keeping them separate in space. , Laboratory rearing studies were used to calculate physiological time-scales for developmental processes.

INVENTORY OF THE WATER STRIDERS OF THE LOWER ILLINOIS RIVER BASIN Steven J. Taylor Illinois Natural History Survey Center for Biodiversity Champaign, Illinois Illinois Natural History Survey Center for Biodiversity Technical Report 1999(25) Prepared for Natural Heritage Division, Illinois Department of Natural Resources Springfield, Illinois December 1999 i Introduction The insect suborder Gerromorpha (Insecta : Heteroptera) includes the water striders (Gerridae) and four other families (Hebridae, Hydrometridae, Mesoveliidae, and Veliidae) occurring in Illinois. These animals inhabit the surface film of both lotic and lentic waters, where they are predators and scavengers feeding upon insects trapped in the surface film . The biology, ecology, and distribution of Illinois Gerromorpha were the subject of my recent (Taylor 1996) dissertation . Currently, additional specimens are being collected to obtain more data on species distributions and habitats in Illinois . Data presented here will ultimately be published with more comprehensive distribution maps and keys to the species of the state . Objectives This study had four primary objectives : • To conduct a faunal inventory of the Gerromorpha in six counties in the lower Illinois • River basin and adjoining parts of the Lincoln Hills . • To produce updated statewide distribution maps for all gerromorphan species in the study area. • To produce a faunal list of gerromorphan species in the study area. • To compile information on microhabitat and species associations for gerromorphan species found in the study area . Methods Field collections were conducted three multi-day trips to Brown, Calhoun, Greene, Jersey, Pike, and Scott counties : early Spring (16 March 1999), late Spring (7-9 May 1999), and Autumn (21-23 September 1999) .

  • Higher Level Phylogeny and the First Divergence Time Estimation of Heteroptera (Insecta: Hemiptera) Based on Multiple Genes
Higher Level Phylogeny and the First Divergence Time Estimation of Heteroptera (Insecta: Hemiptera) Based on Multiple Genes Min Li1., Ying Tian1,2., Ying Zhao1, Wenjun Bu1* 1 Institute of Entomology, College of Life Sciences, Nankai University, Tianjin, China, 2 Patent Examination Cooperation Center, State Interllectual Property Office of the Peoples’ Republic of China, Beijing, China Abstract Heteroptera, or true bugs, are the largest, morphologically diverse and economically important group of insects with incomplete metamorphosis. However, the phylogenetic relationships within Heteroptera are still in dispute and most of the previous studies were based on morphological characters or with single gene (partial or whole 18S rDNA). Besides, so far, divergence time estimates for Heteroptera totally rely on the fossil record, while no studies have been performed on molecular divergence rates. Here, for the first time, we used maximum parsimony (MP), maximum likelihood (ML) and Bayesian inference (BI) with multiple genes (18S rDNA, 28S rDNA, 16S rDNA and COI) to estimate phylogenetic relationships among the infraorders, and meanwhile, the Penalized Likelihood (r8s) and Bayesian (BEAST) molecular dating methods were employed to estimate divergence time of higher taxa of this suborder. Major results of the present study included: Nepomorpha was placed as the most basal clade in all six trees (MP trees, ML trees and Bayesian trees of nuclear gene data and four-gene combined data, respectively) with full support values. The sister-group relationship of Cimicomorpha and Pentatomomorpha was also strongly supported. Nepomorpha originated in early Triassic and the other six infraorders originated in a very short period of time in middle Triassic.
