E, Riverside, CA 92501, USA dCollege of Life Sciences, Peking Univerisity, Beijing, China Received 5 May 2005; received in revised form 29 November 2005; accepted 29 November 2005 Abstract Glassy-winged sharpshooter, Homalodisca coagulata (Say), is an efficient vector of Xylella fastidiosa (Xf), the causal bacterium of Pierce’s disease, and leaf scorch in almond and oleander. Acquisition and inoculation of Xf occur sometime during the process of stylet penetration into the plant. That process is most rigorously studied via electrical penetration graph (EPG) monitoring of insect feeding. This study provides part of the crucial biological meanings that define the waveforms of each new insect species recorded by EPG. By synchronizing AC EPG waveforms with high-magnification video of H. coagulata stylet penetration in artifical diet, we correlated stylet activities with three previously described EPG pathway waveforms, A1, B1 and B2, as well as one ingestion waveform, C. Waveform A1 occured at the beginning of stylet penetration. This waveform was correlated with salivary sheath trunk formation, repetitive stylet movements involving retraction of both maxillary stylets and one mandibular stylet, extension of the stylet fascicle, and the fluttering-like movements of the maxillary stylet tips. -

Abstract With only about 320 described species, Dipsocoromorpha is currently one of the smallest and least studied infraorders of Heteroptera (He- miptera). Specimens are small (often 1 – 2 mm), live in cryptic habitats, are collected using specialized techniques, and curated material in natural history collections is scarce. Despite estimates of vast numbers of yet to be described species, species discovery and documentation has slowed compared to peak taxonomic activity in the mid-20th century. We show, using the genus Peloridinannus Wygodzinsky, 1951 (Hemiptera: Schizopteridae) as an example, that curating specimens from bulk samples already housed in natural history collections is an effective way of advancing our understanding of the biodiversity of this charismatic group of true bugs. Peloridinannus Wygodzinsky was described as a monotypic genus, known only from two female specimens from Costa Rica. Based on examination of 59 specimens from Costa Rica, Panama, Ecuador, and Peru, six new species of Peloridinannus are described, Peloridinannus curly sp.n., Peloridinannus larry sp.n., Peloridinannus laxicosta sp.n., Peloridinannus moe sp.n., Peloridinannus sinefenestra sp.n., and Peloridinannus stenomargaritatus sp.n. -

INTRODUCTION The Pentatomomorpha with its 14 000 known living species (WEIRAUCH & SCHUH 2011) is the second largest of the seven heteropteran infraorders (SCHAEFER 1993, ŠTYS & KERZHNER 1975) (Enicocephalomorpha, Dipsocoromorpha, Gerromorpha, Nepomorpha, Leptodomorpha, Cimicomorpha, and Pentatomorpha). Most authors recognize five superfamilies within Pentatomomorpha, but there remains controversy regarding the 628 Polish Journal of Entomology 80 (4) composition of these superfamilies (SCHAEFER 1993, ŠTYS 1961). -

Representatives of the new genus were collected in mangrove lagoons of Buenaventura Bay, Valle del Cauca Department. The new genus can be diagnosed by the relative proportions of the antennomeres, the shape of the male fore tarsus, and by the black markings on the head, thorax and abdomen. OCHTEROIDEA La Superfamilia Ochteroidea, Incluida En El Infraorden Nepomorpha, Comprende Las Familias Ochteridae Y Gelastocoridae
| 341 Resumen OCHTEROIDEA La superfamilia Ochteroidea, incluida en el infraorden Nepomorpha, comprende las familias Ochteridae y Gelastocoridae. Ambas familias están presentes en todas las regiones biogeográficas del mundo, aunque tienen mayor diversidad y abundancia en las regiones tropicales. Hasta el momento para la Argentina se han citado tres géneros y 10 especies de Gelastocoridae, y una especie de Ochteridae. Se actualiza el estado de conocimiento de sus características morfológicas, bio- logía e historia taxonómica. Se presentan claves para la identificación de las subfamilias de Gelastocoridae y los géneros de Ochteridae, diagnosis de los géneros, la lista de especies y su distribución geográfica en la Argentina. Abstract The superfamily Ochteroidea, included in the in- fraorder Nepomorpha, is comprised of the families Ochteridae and Gelastocoridae. Both of them are present in all biogeographic regions, although they are more abundant and diverse in the tropics. Up to now, three genera and 10 species of Gelastocoridae and a single one of Ochteridae have been recorded from Argentina. I provide an account of the state of knowledge of the morphology, biology and taxonomic history of both families. About the Book the Format Acknowledgments
About the Book For more than ten years I have been working on a book on bryophyte ecology and was joined by Heinjo During, who has been very helpful in critiquing multiple versions of the chapters. But as the book progressed, the field of bryophyte ecology progressed faster. No chapter ever seemed to stay finished, hence the decision to publish online. Furthermore, rather than being a textbook, it is evolving into an encyclopedia that would be at least three volumes. Having reached the age when I could retire whenever I wanted to, I no longer needed be so concerned with the publish or perish paradigm. In keeping with the sharing nature of bryologists, and the need to educate the non-bryologists about the nature and role of bryophytes in the ecosystem, it seemed my personal goals could best be accomplished by publishing online. This has several advantages for me. I can choose the format I want, I can include lots of color images, and I can post chapters or parts of chapters as I complete them and update later if I find it important. Throughout the book I have posed questions. I have even attempt to offer hypotheses for many of these. It is my hope that these questions and hypotheses will inspire students of all ages to attempt to answer these. Some are simple and could even be done by elementary school children. Others are suitable for undergraduate projects. And some will take lifelong work or a large team of researchers around the world. Have fun with them! The Format The decision to publish Bryophyte Ecology as an ebook occurred after I had a publisher, and I am sure I have not thought of all the complexities of publishing as I complete things, rather than in the order of the planned organization. -
