The complete mitochondrial genome (mitogenome) of Spilarctia robusta (Lepidoptera: Noctuoidea: Erebidae) was se- quenced and analyzed. The circular mitogenome is made up of 15,447 base pairs (bp). It contains a set of 37 genes, with the gene complement and order similar to that of other lepidopterans. The 12 protein coding genes (PCGs) have a typical mitochondrial start codon (ATN codons), whereas cytochrome c oxidase subunit 1 (cox1) gene utilizes unusually the CAG codon as documented for other lepidopteran mitogenomes. Four of the 13 PCGs have incomplete termination codons, the cox1, nad4 and nad6 with a single T, but cox2 has TA. It comprises six major intergenic spacers, with the exception of the A+T-rich region, spanning at least 10 bp in the mitogenome. -

Institute of Plant Protection, Shanxi Academy of Agriculture Science, Taiyuan Shanxi 030031, China) Abstract: The complete mitochondrial genome of Apatura ilia (GenBank accession no. JF437925) was determined as a circular DNA molecule of 15 242 bp, with common genes of 13 putative proteins, 2 rRNAs, and 22 tRNAs and of the same gene arrangement as in other sequenced lepidopterans. All protein-coding genes had the typical start codon ATN, except for the COI’s using CGA as its start codon as previously demonstrated in other lepidopteran species. The comparison of the nucleotide sequences of the A. ilia mitogenome with ten other Nymphalidae species showed nearly identical gene orientation and arrangement, with only a few alterations in non-coding fragments. The nucleotide composition and codon frequency all fell into the range estimated for the order Lepidoptera. The A. ilia mitochondrial genome had the canonical set of 22 tRNA genes folded in the typical cloverleaf structure, with an unique exception of tRNASer (AGN). The mitochondrial genes from A. ilia were overlapped in a total of 33 bp at 9 locations, as well as interleaved with a total of 155 bp intergenic spacers, spread over 12 regions with the size ranging from 1 to 49 bp. -

Freyer’s purple emperor, Apatura metis Freyer, 1829 (Papilionoidea: Nymphalidae, Apaturinae), a new species in the butterfly fauna of Bosnia and Herzegovina. In this paper the first data on finding of Freyer’s purple emperor (Apatura metis Freyer, 1829) in Bosnia and Herzegovina are presented. The author has collected two male specimens at the location Bajinci near Bardača (Northern Bosnia and Herzegovina) several hundred meters from the confluence of rivers Vrbas and Sava. Apatura metis Freyer is the 189th undisputed species in the checklist of butterflies of Bosnia and Herzegovina. Key words: butterflies, biodiversity, Nymphalidae, Nymphalinae, Apatura, iris, ilia, metis, Bosnia and Herzegovina INTRODUCTION The onset of biosystematic research into butterflies in Bosnia and Herzegovina dates from the first half of the 19th century. This statement is supported by the fact that the species Plebejus dardanus Freyer was described as early as 1844 on the basis of specimens from Cvrsnica Mt. (Herzegovina). The very first list containing 125 species of butterflies from Bosnia and Herzegovina was published in 1892 (Apfelbeck, 1892). The revisions of the published list followed in 1904 with 160 listed species (Rebel, 1904), in 1980 with 186 listed species (Sijarić, 1980) and in 2000 with 186 listed species, in 2007 with 188 listed species and, finally, in 2008 with 190 species (Lelo, 2000; 2004; 2005-2007; 2008). -
The Lepidoptera of Bucharest and Its Surroundings (Romania)

This study presents a synthesis of the current knowledge regarding the Lepidoptera fauna of Bucharest and the surrounding areas within a distance up to 50 kilometers around the Romanian capital. Data about the fauna composition are presented: the results of the research work beginning with the end of the 19th century, as well the results of the research work carried out in the last 15 years. The research initiated and done by the author himself, led to the identification of 180 species which were unknown in the past. Even if the natural habitats from this region have undergone through radical changes in the 20th century, the area still preserves a quite rich and interesting Lepidoptera fauna. The forests provide shelter to rich populations of the hawk moth Dolbina elegans A. Bang-Haas, 1912, one of the rarest Sphingidae in Europe, and some other species with high faunistical and zoogeographical value as: Noctua haywardi (Tams, 1926) (it is new record for the Romanian fauna from this area), Catocala dilecta (Hübner, 1808), Tarachidia candefacta (Hübner, [1831]), Chrysodeixis chalcites (Esper, [1789]), Aedia leucomelas (Linnaeus, 1758), and Hecatera cappa (Hübner, [1809]). We also present and discuss the current status of the protected Lepidoptera species from the surroundings of the Romanian capital for the first time. Résumé. Ce travail représente une synthèse des connaissances actuelles concernant la faune de lépidoptères de Bucarest et de ses zones limitrophes sur un rayon de 50 km autour de la capitale de la Roumanie. -

It is based on a concatenated alignment of the mitochondrial gene COI and up to 11 nuclear gene fragments, using Bayesian inference of phylogeny. To avoid analytical biases that could result from our region-focus sampling, our European tree was grafted upon a global genus- level backbone butterfly phylogeny for analyses. In addition to a consensus tree, we provide the posterior distribution of trees and the fully-concatenated alignment for future analyses. -

Military training areas are increasingly recognized as areas of high biodiversity and habitats for many wild organisms, in- cluding threatened or endangered species. However, the information on the ecological value of military training areas is limited because it is difficult access these sites. The aim of this study is to evaluate the effect of military activity on butterfly communities. The survey was carried out in a military training area (MTA) at Inje-gun near the demilitarized zone (DMZ), Inje forest (IJF) a secondary forest and Gwangneung forest (GWF) an old growth forest, from April to October 2008 to 2011. IJF and GWF were selected in order to determine the characteristics of a butterfly community differed in a MTA. -

After visiting mountain streams in the Sredna Gora Mountains, we moved south-east to the low mountains of the biodiversity-rich, Eastern Rhodope. Here, two days looking at varied habitats produced more than half the total of dragonfly species we were to encounter, including the enigmatic Bulgarian Emerald at the idyllic location where it was first discovered ten years earlier. Incredibly, we also found this species at a new location the following day, on the way to our next two days in the higher Western Rhodope Mountains. After seeing lots of Spearhead (Northern) Bluets at their southernmost locality in the world, we moved on via close encounter with Wallcreeper to Melnik, the base for our final two nights. At Rupite Hot Springs, Europe’s largest insect, Saga natoliae, vied with dragonflies for our attention! The group saw a total of 39 species of dragonflies, 88 butterflies and 122 birds, not to mention a wide range of other animals and plants that the combined talents of the group helped to find and identify. -

We provide new data on the Rhopalocera of Dobrogea (south-eastern Romania), a region that represents a meeting point for faunistical elements from Central Europe, Balkans, Asia Minor and the Russian steppe. Lycaena tityrus (Poda, 1761) and Neptis sappho (Pallas, 1771) are rediscovered in Dobrogea after 142 years and are recorded for the first time in the south of the province. New faunistical data as well as ecological and conservation aspects are also provided for several species with very few records in Dobrogea, such as Zerynthia polyxena ([Denis & Schiffermüller], 1775), Brenthis daphne (Bergsträsser, 1780), Brenthis ino (Rottemburg, 1775), Brenthis hecate ([Denis & Schiffermüller], 1775), Euphydryas maturna (Linnaeus, 1758), Hipparchia syriaca (Staudinger, 1871), etc. The survival of Tomares nogelii (Herrich-Schäffer, 1851) in Romania is discussed as directed research didn’t allow for the discovery of any population both in previously known or potential sites. The presence of Carcharodus floccifera (Zeller, 1847) in Dobrogea is confirmed by genitalia and new data is presented that indicates its probable sympatry with Carcharodus orientalis Reverdin, 1913 in this province.
