Our relations and intercourse with the sister kingdom have become, from a variety of causes, so intimate, that our manners, our customs, and even our language, are assimilating with rapid strides to those of that country. Not- withstanding, however, that the simple, ex- pressive style of our fathers be becoming less and less frequent in conversation among the middle ranks, yet our poetry is still understood and ad- mired by every Scotchman, and is fondly trea- sured up in the memory of such of our coun- trymen whom adventitious circumstances have placed at a distance from their native land, who pore with delight over the rich humour, tender IV pathos, and descriptive beauty of their country's bards. Our language may fluctuate, and per- haps be lost in the English, but so long as there remains amongst us a taste for simplicity in writ- ing, and beauty in poetry, so long will our an- cient ballads and songs be admired. They are very numerous, and exhibit an astonishing fer- tility of genius in their authors, who relate the loves, depict the manners, and record the actions of a rude but gallant people, with a brevity of description, and a tenderness of feeling, that take a firm hold of the mind ; and may therefore be studied with much advantage by the lover of true poetry, and perused with no little mental profit by the politician and historian.—It was on these foundations that Burns raised that fame which immortalises him ; his enthusiastic admiration led him to imitate, and he surpassed them in feeling, and equalled them in humour ; his cri- tical taste improved many of our old songs, and his compositions have raised the lyric poetry of Scotland above that of every other country. To him have succeeded Macneill, Hogg, and Tannahill, who uphold the lustre of their pre- decessors by the lively images and natural feel- ing which pervade their pieces, and by that want of gaudy colouring which dazzles the eye but never readies the affections. In some of our early poems, it must be ad- mitted, there is a broadness of humour, a free- dom of thought and expression, which in mo- dern productions would be turned from with disgust, but which our virtuous but less polish- ed ancestors not only countenanced but ad- mired. The collector of Scottish poetry has therefore before him wide and extensive fields, abound- ing in beautiful and variegated flowers, with here and there a few rank weeds ; much conse- quently depends on his selection of the mate- rials, in his rejecting the baneful, retaining the useful, elegant, and beautiful, and in some measure on the manner in which he disposes the flowers he has culled, by placing in their proper light the dark shades, sprightly glow, and airy colours, so as to form a combination at once pleasing and instructive.—It has been the Editor's endeavour to form this Collection on these principles. He has rejected? every gross and indelicate poem or song which could raise a blush on the cheek of modesty, at the same time he has not been so fastidious as omit those delineations of nature which mark the pure morals and honost character of our forefathers, a3 ; VI and give a faithful picture of the manners of those times. The Collection is divided into three Parts in the classification of the First and Third, the plan of the acute and learned Mr Ritson has been followed. The First Part consists of His- torical and Romantic Ballads ; the Second of Tales; and the Third of Songs, under the heads Humorous, Love, and Miscellaneous. To the poems in the First and Second Parts brief observations are prefixed, with a view to eluci- date the transactions related ; and in the Third Part are given the author's names, and anecdotes regarding many of the Songs. Such informa- tion has been long wanting, and it is wholly owing to BuRNs's passion for Scottish poetry, that so much is now known of the history of our lyrics ; he procured all the late Mr Tytler of Woodhouselee''s anecdotes, which, with his own strictures, are published in Mr Cromek's Reliques of the immortal bard ; —^from that au- thentic source, from Ritson's Scottish Songs, and from other Collections, the Editor has gleaned much of his information on this subject. In every instance he has followed the most correct copies he could obtain of the various poems, being convinced th^t accuracy in the readings Vll ought to be a main object in all publications of this nature : typographical errors may have crept in notwithstanding the greatest care, yet these it is hoped occur but in a few instances. While he thus vouches for its correctness, he is well aware that this epitome of Scottish poetry derives little interest from his observations, in- deed he lays no claim to literary attainments, and has only humbly followed the track of men eminent for their erudition and talents, of some of the first literary characters of the present day, but he trusts, from its combining many of the best pieces of our ancient and modern bards, with a greater variety of Songs and Ballads than is to be met with in any other Collection, that it exhibits in their true light the genius, senti- ments, and manners of this portion of the island in its rude as well as in its more enlightened state. [This is supposed to be one of the oldest Scottish ballads extant, and relates an event that must have occurred at a remote period of our history, no account of such an expedition being recorded by any of our early writers.] The King sits in Dumfermline toun.     B AR B ARA C HING Happily Ever After in the Marketplace: The Ballads of the Southern Mountains and the Escape from Old Europe Between 1882 and 1898, Harvard English Professor Francis J. Child published The English and Scottish Popular Ballads, a five volume col- lection of ballad lyrics that he believed to pre-date the printing press. While ballad collections had been published before, the scope and pur- ported antiquity of Child’s project captured the public imagination; within a decade, folklorists and amateur folk song collectors excitedly reported finding versions of the ballads in the Appalachians. Many enthused about the ‘purity’ of their discoveries – due to the supposed isolation of the British immigrants from the corrupting influences of modernization. When Englishman Cecil Sharp visited the mountains in search of English ballads, he described the people he encountered as “just English peasant folk [who] do not seem to me to have taken on any distinctive American traits” (cited in Whisnant 116). Even during the mid-century folk revival, Kentuckian Jean Thomas, founder of the American Folk Song Festival, wrote in the liner notes to a 1960 Folk- ways album featuring highlights from the festival that at the close of the Elizabethan era, English, Scotch, and Scotch Irish wearied of the tyranny of their kings and spurred by undaunted courage and love of inde- pendence they braved the perils of uncharted seas to seek freedom in a new world. Some tarried in the colonies but the braver, bolder, more venturesome of spirit pressed deep into the Appalachians bringing with them – hope in their hearts, song on their lips – the song their Anglo-Saxon forbears had gathered from the wander- ing minstrels of Shakespeare’s time.

AFS L 54 Edited by Charles Seeger PROBABLY IT IS safe to say that most English-speaking people in the United States know at least one ballad-tune or a derivative of one. If it is not "The Two Sisters, " it will surely be "When Johnny Comes Marching Home"; or if not "The Derby Ram, " then the old Broadway hit "Oh Didn't He Ramble." If. the title is given or the song sung to them, they will say "Oh yes, I know tllat tune." And probably that tune, more or less as they know it, is to them, the tune of the song. If they hear it sung differently, as may be the case, they are as likely to protest as to ignore or even not notice the difference. Afterward, in their recognition or singing of it, they are as likely to incor­ porate some of the differences as not to do so. If they do, they are as likely to be aware as to be entirely unconscious of having done ·so. But if they ad­ mit the difference yet grant that both singings are of "that" tune, they have taken the first step toward the study of the ballad-tune. They have acknow­ ledged that there are enough resemblances between the two to allow both to be called by the same name.

    Oral Tradition, 29/1 (2014):47-68 Voices from Kilbarchan: Two versions of “The Cruel Mother” from South-West Scotland, 1825 Flemming G. Andersen Introduction It was not until the early decades of the nineteenth century that a concern for preserving variants of the same ballad was really taken seriously by collectors. Prior to this ballad editors had been content with documenting single illustrations of ballad types in their collections; that is, they gave only one version (and often a “conflated” or “amended” one at that), such as for instance Thomas Percy’s Reliques of Ancient English Poetry from 1765 and Walter Scott’s Minstrelsy of the Scottish Border from 1802. But with “the antiquarian’s quest for authenticity” (McAulay 2013:5) came the growing appreciation of the living ballad tradition and an interest in the singers themselves and their individual interpretations of the traditional material. From this point on attention was also given to different variations of the same ballad story, including documentation (however slight) of the ballads in their natural environment. William Motherwell (1797-1835) was one of the earliest ballad collectors to pursue this line of collecting, and he was very conscious of what this new approach would mean for a better understanding of the nature of an oral tradition. And as has been demonstrated elsewhere, Motherwell’s approach to ballad collecting had an immense impact on later collectors and editors (see also, Andersen 1994 and Brown 1997). In what follows I shall first give an outline of the earliest extensively documented singing community in the Anglo-Scottish ballad tradition, and then present a detailed analysis of two versions of the same ballad story (“The Cruel Mother”) taken down on the same day in 1825 from two singers from the same Scottish village.

In this, the First Series, it has been the chief object of the Editor to gather together the older lyrical productions connected with the county, intermixed with a slight sprinkling of the more recent, by way of lightsome variation. The aim of the work is to collect those pieces, ancient and modern, which, scattered throughout various publications, are inaccessible to many readers ; and to glean from, oral recitation the floating relics of a former age that still exist in living remembrance, as well as to supply such in- formation respecting the subject or author as maybe deemed interesting. The songs of Burns—save, perhaps, a few of the more rare—having been already collected in numerous editions, and consequently well known, will form no part of the Repository. In distinguishing the Ballads and Songs of Ayrshire, the Editor has been, and will be, guided by the connec- tion they have with the district, either as to the author or subject ; and now that the First Series is before the public, he trusts that, whatever may be its defects, the credit at least will be given Jiim of aiming, how- ever feebly, at the construction of a lasting monument of the lyrical literature of Ayrshire.
