Abstract Phd a Cappella Arraning English
Abstract: „Contemporary A Cappella - Arranging and Producing“ My PhD-thesis gives an insight into contemporary a cappella arranging. It focuses on two a cappella groups of the United States who emerged from the a cappella boom since the foundation of Contemporary A Cappella Society by Deke Sharon in the year 1991. Both Groups, each won the a cappella casting show The Sing off - Pentatonix in 2011 and Home Free in 2012 - and started/continued their career as professional a cappella singers. I will mainly focus on the arrangements of Pentatonix and Home Free in terms of writing- and production process and in what way the Music is released as media (CD, Spotify, iTunes, music video and sheet music). By using music analysis I am trying to understand how the arrangements of the above mentioned groups are processed and what techniques they use. With this knowledge I plan to explore these ideas via qualitativ empirical methods in the field of contemporary a cappella: interviews with arrangers, producers and a cappella singers, participating observation through camps, rehearsals and concerts, and being part of production-, mixing- and mastering sessions with the a cappella groups, arrangers and audio engineers. After gathering these informations I’m planing to transform them into a (german) „how to…“-guide for music teachers and conductors to create their own arrangement „in the style of …“. My central aim is to combine popular music research with music pedagogy to feed back knowledge I achieved to the actors in the field. SOMETHING SACRED: The Real Contribution of Salesian Spirituality for Our Virtual Culture retreat conference for the Oblates of St. Francis de Sales June 1998 Preface In his opening remarks, Fr. Provincial noted that he would not, or could not, speak to you for sixty minutes, as the schedule suggests. But he did give that task to me! So let me get right to it. Way back when, at the time that we were planning this retreat, there was a great hullabaloo about a television show that was airing on ABC called Nothing Sacred. You'll recognize the obvious allusion to it in the title of our retreat. Since then, for better or worse, the show has been canceled. Hopefully, you won't wish the same fate upon this presentation! But, there's no need to worry. I have no intention of offering some theological review of this program in objection to its moral or pastoral perspectives. (After all, I only saw one episode, and it was boring enough not to elicit further viewing.) I do, however, have a problem with the assumption that underlies the show, the assumption that in our present culture, the interaction of religion and society is denigrated to the point where it is popular to think that "nothing" is to be taken as "sacred."(1) For it is my conviction, and the basis for this retreat, that we as Oblates do, indeed, have "something sacred" to offer to our world - namely, the charism of Salesian Spirituality which has been entrusted to us to disseminate to others through our ministries. -

Buckley A Thesis Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Music August 2014 Committee: Katherine Meizel, Advisor Kara Attrep Megan Rancier © 2014 Katie Buckley All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Katherine Meizel, Advisor Glee, a popular FOX television show that began airing in 2009, has continuously pushed the limits of what is acceptable on American television. This musical comedy, focusing on a high school glee club, incorporates numerous stereotypes and real-world teenage struggles. This thesis focuses on the queer characteristics of four female personalities: Santana, Brittany, Coach Beiste, and Coach Sue. I investigate how their musical performances are producing a constructive form of mass media by challenging hegemonic femininity through camp and by producing relatable queer female role models. In addition, I take an ethnographic approach by examining online fan blogs from the host site Tumblr.
