Objectivity, Interdisciplinary Methodology, and Shared Authority
ABSTRACT HISTORY TATE. RACHANICE CANDY PATRICE B.A. EMORY UNIVERSITY, 1987 M.P.A. GEORGIA STATE UNIVERSITY, 1990 M.A. UNIVERSITY OF WISCONSIN- MILWAUKEE, 1995 “OUR ART ITSELF WAS OUR ACTIVISM”: ATLANTA’S NEIGHBORHOOD ARTS CENTER, 1975-1990 Committee Chair: Richard Allen Morton. Ph.D. Dissertation dated May 2012 This cultural history study examined Atlanta’s Neighborhood Arts Center (NAC), which existed from 1975 to 1990, as an example of black cultural politics in the South. As a Black Arts Movement (BAM) institution, this regional expression has been missing from academic discussions of the period. The study investigated the multidisciplinary programming that was created to fulfill its motto of “Art for People’s Sake.” The five themes developed from the program research included: 1) the NAC represented the juxtaposition between the individual and the community, local and national; 2) the NAC reached out and extended the arts to the masses, rather than just focusing on the black middle class and white supporters; 3) the NAC was distinctive in space and location; 4) the NAC seemed to provide more opportunities for women artists than traditional BAM organizations; and 5) the NAC had a specific mission to elevate the social and political consciousness of black people. In addition to placing the Neighborhood Arts Center among the regional branches of the BAM family tree, using the programmatic findings, this research analyzed three themes found to be present in the black cultural politics of Atlanta which made for the center’s unique grassroots contributions to the movement. The themes centered on a history of politics, racial issues, and class dynamics. -

He took an early interest in music and began playing the saxophone at the age of 10. In his teens he continued on with the instrument while falling in love with the R&B sounds of groups like Earth Wind & Fire that were so popular during the 1970s. In 1973, at just 17 years old, Kenny G was hired by Barry White to perform with his Love Unlimited Orchestra at the Paramount Northwest Theater. The performance was the first of several for Kenny G with White and his band. It was around the time he started playing with White that the saxophonist changed his name to Kenny G. Following his graduation from Franklin High School, Kenny G followed two very different career tracks. He enrolled at the University of Washington and began studying accounting, while continuing to pursue a career in music. -

Anne Cochran and Abe Lamarca Cain Park Bio 2017
Anne Cochran/Abe LaMarca Cain Park Bio 2017 Anne Cochran/Abe LaMarca Anne Cochran and Abe LaMarca’s Smooth Jazz Radio Hit, “Who’s Gonna Baby You?” is the culmination of many years of exciting their concert audiences with a warm, energetic and soulful live show. With a style that calls to mind Bonnie and Delaney meets Marvin Gaye and Tammy Terrell, this entertaining vocal pair has been consistently selling out shows since reuniting in 2012. It was at that time, Anne approached Abe with the idea to collaborate on a song called “Rise and Shine”; their first single to make Smooth Jazz and AC Radio stop and take notice. With the creative and artistic juices again flowing, along with the encouragement of his longtime friend, LaMarca produced his solo CD, “Stand and Deliver’’ as well as Anne’s 10th highly acclaimed CD, “Deeper”, which garnered another top 40 AC hit, “The Moment You Were Mine.” Since then, they’ve been playing to standing room only audiences that can’t seem to get enough. Anne Cochran has established herself as a beloved and respected live performer as well as a “First Call” and in demand, studio vocalist. Through her partnership with the chart - topping, romantic piano man, Jim Brickman, she has garnered national acclaim as his featured lead vocalist on tours from Carnegie Hall to Severance Hall. Kenny G Bio 2018
A phenomenally successful instrumentalist whose recordings routinely made the pop, R&B, and jazz charts during the 1980s and ’90s, Kenny G‘s sound became a staple on adult contemporary and smooth jazz radio stations. He’s a fine player with an attractive sound (influenced a bit by Grover Washington, Jr.) who often caresses melodies, putting a lot of emotion into his solos. Because he does not improvise much (sticking mostly to predictable melody statements), his music largely falls outside of jazz. However, because he is listed at the top of “contemporary jazz” charts and is identified with jazz in the minds of the mass public, he is classified as jazz. Kenny Gorelick started playing professionally with Barry White‘s Love Unlimited Orchestra in 1976. He recorded with Cold, Bold & Together (a Seattle-based funk group) and freelanced locally. After graduating from the University of Washington, Kenny G worked with Jeff Lorber Fusion, making two albums with the group. Soon he was signed to Arista, recording his debut as a leader in 1982. His fourth album, Duotones(which included the very popular “Songbird”), made him into a star. Soon he was in demand for guest appearances on recordings of such famous singers as Aretha Franklin, Whitney Houston, and Natalie Cole. Kenny G’s own records have sold remarkably well, particularly Breathless, which has easily topped eight million copies in the U.S.; his total album sales top 30 million copies. The holiday album Miracles, released in 1994, and 1996’s Moment continued the momentum of his massive commercial success. He also recorded his own version of the Celine Dion/Titanic smash “My Heart Will Go On” in 1998, but the following year he released Classics in the Key of G, a collection of jazz standards like “‘Round Midnight” and “Body and Soul,” possibly to reclaim some jazz credibility. -
