Brown, Advisor Between 1984 and 1991, heavy metal became one of the most publicly popular and commercially successful rock music subgenres. The focus of this dissertation is to explore the following research questions: How did the subculture of heavy metal music between 1984 and 1991 evolve and what meanings can be derived from this ongoing process? How did the contextual circumstances surrounding heavy metal music during this period impact the performative choices exhibited by artists, and from a position of retrospection, what lasting significance does this particular era of heavy metal merit today? A textual analysis of metal- related materials fostered the development of themes relating to the selective choices made and performances enacted by metal artists. These themes were then considered in terms of gender, sexuality, race, and age constructions as well as the ongoing negotiations of the metal artist within multiple performative realms. Occurring at the juncture of art and commerce, heavy metal music is a purposeful construction. Metal musicians made performative choices for serving particular aims, be it fame, wealth, or art. These same individuals worked within a greater system of influence. Metal bands were the contracted employees of record labels whose own corporate aims needed to be recognized. -

ANNUAL REPORT 2019/20 Fadi Kheir Fadi LETTERS FROM THE LEADERSHIP The New York Philharmonic’s 2019–20 season certainly saw it all. We recall the remarkable performances ranging from Berlioz to Beethoven, with special pride in the launch of Project 19 — the single largest commissioning program ever created for women composers — honoring the ratification of the 19th Amendment. Together with Lincoln Center we unveiled specific plans for the renovation and re-opening of David Geffen Hall, which will have both great acoustics and also public spaces that can welcome the community. In March came the shock of a worldwide pandemic hurtling down the tracks at us, and on the 10th we played what was to be our final concert of the season. Like all New Yorkers, we tried to come to grips with the life-changing ramifications The Philharmonic responded quickly and in one week created NY Phil Plays On, a portal to hundreds of hours of past performances, to offer joy, pleasure, solace, and comfort in the only way we could. In August we launched NY Phil Bandwagon, bringing live music back to New York. Bandwagon presented 81 concerts from Chris Lee midtown to the far reaches of every one of the five boroughs. In the wake of the Erin Baiano horrific deaths of Black men and women, and the realization that we must all participate to change society, we began the hard work of self-evaluation to create a Philharmonic that is truly equitable, diverse, and inclusive. The severe financial challenge caused by cancelling fully a third of our 2019–20 concerts resulting in the loss of $10 million is obvious. -

He has Ann Ellsworth, horn become an indispensable collaborator for numerous indie rock groups as a Tim Albright, trombone performer, arranger, improviser, and soloist and is a co-founder of the contemporary classical ensemble yMusic. yMusic’s debut record was named Time Out New York’s #1 Classical Record of 2011, the same year Soft Night CJ Camerieri & Trever Hagen that Camerieri won two Grammys as a member of Bon Iver for the band’s Nowhere sophomore record, which later reached gold status. He is currently the Invisible Walls newest member of Paul Simon’s band, joining for 2014’s “Paul Simon and Slantwise Sting: On Stage Together” tour. -

Introduction to Focus 2020 by Joel Sachs The seed for this year’s Focus Festival was planted in December 2018 at a Juilliard doctoral recital by the Chilean violist Sergio Muñoz Leiva. I was especially struck by the sonata of Rebecca Clarke, an Anglo-American composer of the early 20th century who has been known largely by that one piece, now a staple of the viola repertory. Thinking about the challenges she faced in establishing her credibility as a professional composer, my mind went to a group of women in that period, roughly 1885 to 1930, who struggled to be accepted as professional composers rather than as professional performers writing as a secondary activity or as amateur composers. -

With the support of the EHS administration, students and their families, and our amazing production team, we are thrilled to be able to present to you, ENCORE! 2021: Studio Sessions. The concept of “studio sessions” was created from the guidelines and restrictions we had to work with to keep students and staff safe during this process. With guidelines requiring us to keep cast numbers small and rehearsal time short, “studio sessions” seemed like the perfect (and safest!) way to showcase our performers. This show is a celebration of music, theater, dance, and most importantly, student resilience, and the power of community. Thesis. Jakarta: English Letters Department, Letters and Humanities Faculty, Syarif Hidayatullah State Islamic University of Jakarta, September 2017. This research is on Pragmatic scope that focuses on impoliteness strategies. The unit of analysis is Pitch Perfect movies transcript. It is a qualitative research. It is intended to identify the types of impoliteness strategies chosen by characters, how the characters respond the FTAs, and the features of offending event that trigger the characters to do impoliteness. This research used Impoliteness strategies theory by Jonathan Culpeper as the main theory, Impoliteness strategies by Derek Bousfield, and Offending Event by Timothy Jay as the supporting theories. As the result, it was found that all five strategies were chosen by the characters. The strategies from the most chosen to the less chosen were as follow positive impoliteness strategy, negative impoliteness strategy, bald on record impoliteness strategy, sarcasm or mock politeness strategy, and withhold politeness strategy. The characters frequently harmed the addressees‟ face by insulting name calling and using obscure language sub-strategies. The delivered FTAs made the addressees dominantly evaluated them with responses. The addressee responded the FTAs by choosing offensive countering. The characters mostly countered the offender by asking a challenge question which is in negative impoliteness strategy. -

Barbershop: A Cappella’s Martial Art By Deke Sharon You're young, you're scrappy. You want to be the best. You started singing in school, like everyone: choir, maybe a couple musicals. Karaoke with some friends, talent shows. Then some collegiate a cappella. But you don't want to just be fine. That's not enough. You want to be great. You want technique, you want moves. You need to learn karate...except contemporary a cappella doesn't have a traditional refined martial art...does it? It does. It's called Barbershop. And you're about to get the best schooling a young'un can, including: BLEND: There's no blend like a barbershop blend. They don't just match their vowels, they align their diphthongs as they sweep from one vowel to the next. Four guys sounding like one guy. Why does blend matter? Because each vowel has a very specific "fingerprint" — frequencies in the harmonic series— and when the vowels are perfectly aligned, it helps lock down... TUNING: You think four voices can only create four notes? Guess again. When you lock your voices into perfect tune with the same vowels you cannot only create additional notes above yours, you can even create the perception of a bass note below the human vocal range. That's right, that's the vocal equivalent of some kind of dark arts ninja magic. But it works, and it happens every day, along with... DYNAMICS: Pop music on the radio has had the life squashed out of it. Learn how to sing quieter than you thought you could, and make a group sound that's louder than you have, without microphones.
