Your Name Here PANDORA’S POETICS: EKPHRASIS IN THE ANCIENT EPIC by CHRISTINE LOREN ALBRIGHT (Under the Direction of James H.S. McGregor) ABSTRACT Ekphrasis in epic poetry functions as a uterine body inside the larger masculine epic body; its extreme vividness and feminine form offer a pageant of alluring sexual power, seducing the audience into the universe of the poem. The rhetorical technique begins with the description of Achilles’ shield in the Iliad, where it helps the oral poet accomplish the act of persuasion which occurs between poet and audience. The spiralling form of the ekphrasis offers its audience the irresistible possiblity of pre-natal wholeness and divine communion: the scenes of the ekphrasis represent the cosmic whole of Minoan religious ritual, which generally focused on regeneration through the fertile feminine body and which specifically involved the Labyrinth dance. Hesiod, recognizing how ekphrasis functions in oral epic, uses the figure of Pandora as an illustration of ekphrasis in the Theogony, which is both a cosmogony about the physical universe and also a commentary on the epic body itself. As each successive epic poet uses ekphrasis more extensively in order to establish himself as an author, ekphrasis evolves until the boundary between it and the rest of the poem is eroded. Ovid’s Metamorphoses serves as an example of ekphrasis in an evolved state; he applies the characteristics of ekphrasis to the whole of the poem. Ovid follows both Homer and Hesiod in presenting ekphrasis as a pathway to divine truth, and he manipulates this aspect of ekphrasis in order to conceal the politically subversive statement which the Metamorphoses offers. Alexandrian lexicographer Hesychius defines the Greek term “ἔκφρaσιϛ” with the word “ἐπιθυμία,” which means “sexual desire” or “erotic longing.”1 At first, his definition seems rather oddly eroticized; ekphrasis, after all, is a literary representation of art or artifact. It is a technique which begins with the Homeric description of Achilles’ shield in Book Eighteen of the Iliad and continues thereafter as a convention of poetry, especially of epic poetry. In its most basic sense, ekphrasis is the 1 Hesychius, Lexicon. I have used the nineteenth-century edition of Hesychius by Moriz Wilhelm Constantin Schmidt (1858-1868). Liddell and Scott also offer “ἐπιθυμία” for Hesychius’ definition, following this early edition. Several months after writing the first draft of this introduction, I happened to look at Hesychius’ lexicon on the Thesaurus Linguae Graecae (TLG) website, www.tlg.uci.edu, and was surprised to find “ἐπιμυθία” instead “ἐπιθυμία.” The

These works are part of the wider chronological and geographical context of the ancient Greek world. Twenty six artifacts in total, mainly jewelry, as well as plates, discs, golden bust, coins, pendant and a vial are being examined. Their age dates back to the 6th century. B.C. until the 3rd century A.D. The discussion is about making a symbol of the deceased persist for long in the antiquity and showing the evolution of this form. The earliest forms of the Gorgo of the Archaic period depict a monster demon-like bellows, with feathers, snakes in the head, tongue protruding from the mouth and tusks. Then, in classical times, the gorgonian form appears with human characteristics, while the protruded tusks and the tongue remain. Towards Hellenistic times and until late antiquity, the gorgoneion has characteristics of a beautiful woman. Snakes are the predominant element of this gorgon, which either composes the gargoyle's hairstyle or is plundered like a jewel under its chin. This female figure with the snakes is interwoven with Gorgo- Medusa and the Perseus myth that had a wide reflection throughout the ancient times.

    ATHENIANS AND ELEUSINIANS IN THE WEST PEDIMENT OF THE PARTHENON (PLATE 95) T HE IDENTIFICATION of the figuresin the west pedimentof the Parthenonhas long been problematic.I The evidencereadily enables us to reconstructthe composition of the pedimentand to identify its central figures.The subsidiaryfigures, however, are rath- er more difficult to interpret. I propose that those on the left side of the pediment may be identifiedas membersof the Athenian royal family, associatedwith the goddessAthena, and those on the right as membersof the Eleusinian royal family, associatedwith the god Posei- don. This alignment reflects the strife of the two gods on a heroic level, by referringto the legendary war between Athens and Eleusis. The recognition of the disjunctionbetween Athenians and Eleusinians and of parallelism and contrastbetween individualsand groups of figures on the pedimentpermits the identificationof each figure. The referenceto Eleusis in the pediment,moreover, indicates the importanceof that city and its majorcult, the Eleu- sinian Mysteries, to the Athenians. The purpose of the thesis is to explore the bases for these perceptions and their accuracy. Krete’s self-perception is examined in the light of the account of Diodoros Siculus (Book 5, 64-80, allegedly based on Kretan sources), backed up by inscriptions and archaeology, while outside perceptions are derived mainly from other literary sources, including, inter alia, Homer, Strabo, Plato and Aristotle, Herodotos and Polybios; in both cases making reference also to the fragments and testimonia of ancient historians of Krete. While the main cult-epithets of Zeus on Krete – Diktaios, associated with pre-Greek inhabitants of eastern Krete, Idatas, associated with Dorian settlers, and Kretagenes, the symbol of the Hellenistic koinon - are almost unique to the island, those of Apollo are not, but there is good reason to believe that both Delphinios and Pythios originated on Krete, and evidence too that the Eleusinian Mysteries and Orphic and Dionysiac rites had much in common with early Kretan practice. The early institutionalization of pederasty, and the abduction of boys described by Ephoros, are unique to Krete, but the latter is distinct from rites of initiation to manhood, which continued later on Krete than elsewhere, and were associated with different gods.

The inscription was found on the island in 1959.1 The editions on which my comments will be based are the one by Ch. Roueché and S. Sher- win-White (1985) and the most recent one by K. Jeppesen (1989). We have to bear in mind the fact that the numbering of lines is different in the two editions, as the gap between the covering letter of Anaxarchus and the letter of Ikadion is considered a line by Jeppesen, and is numbered (line 7 in his edition). Roueché and Sherwin-White do not number the gap. In the following references, the numbers are those of the lines in the two editions. The edition by Roueché and Sherwin-White will be referred to as Chiron, whereas the one by Jeppesen as «Jeppesen ’89».
