2015–2016 Concert Series

Performances take place Sundays at 7:00 p.m. and Mondays at 8:00 p.m.

The Knights

October 4 & 5, 2015

The brilliant orchestral collective that made its Washington debut at Dumbarton Oaks returns as a chamber ensemble to offer a stirring evening of music from roughly one hundred years ago, in the tumultuous but highly creative times surrounding World War I. Music From The Great War Era includes works by Maurice Ravel, Ernest Bloch, Sergei Prokofiev, and Igor Stravinsky.

November 15 & 16, 2015

Exploring the close connections between traditional classical and contemporary music, the professional vocal ensemble Third Practice bridges the gap between past and present in a performance of the motet Komm, Jesu, Komm by J. S. Bach, the exquisite Musikalische Exequien by Heinrich Schütz, and the little match girl passion by David Lang, which won the 2008 Pulitzer Prize.

The acclaimed Baroque ensemble brings its dazzling virtuosity and warm expressiveness to this season’s holiday program, Frost and Fire: A Scottish Christmas Celebration. Traditional Scottish Gaelic tunes seasoned with a dash of Cape Breton–style fiddling are interspersed with seasonal music by , , Heinrich Biber, and Georg Muffat.

Christopher Taylor

January 10 & 11, 2016

A New York Times preview article about this remarkable American artist begins, “Those who know the pianist Christopher Taylor tend to speak of him in the hushed, reverent tones typically reserved for natural wonders if not the otherworldly. . . . Critics praise his virtuosity, [and] his cerebral interpretations tempered by an aching tenderness.” The award‑winning musician will play compositions by J. S. Bach, Alexander Scriabin, and Johannes Brahms.

Horszowski Trio

January 31 & February 1, 2016

When the members of the Horszowski Trio played together for the first time, they immediately felt the spark of a unique connection. Their close friendship had created a deep trust, which in turn has led to exhilarating expressive freedom. Experience their powerful artistic chemistry in a program of piano trios by Ludwig van Beethoven, Joan Tower, and Robert Schumann.

The Dover Quartet catapulted to http://doaks.org/news-events/friends-of-music/2015-2016 2/4 5/20/2015 2015–2016 Concert Series — Dumbarton Oaks international stardom following a stunning sweep of the 2013 Banff International String Quartet Competition. The New Yorker dubbed them “the young American string quartet of the moment,” and the Strad lauded their “exceptional interpretive maturity, tonal refinement and taut ensemble.” Hear them play works by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Caroline Shaw, and Dmitri Shostakovich.

Venice Baroque Orchestra

April 10 & 11, 2016

The celebrated Baroque Orchestra is recognized as one of the premier ensembles devoted to period instrument performance. Led from the harpsichord by the scholar and ensemble’s founder Andrea Marcon, the orchestra promises to deliver a splendid evening of for multiple instruments by , Arcangelo Corelli, , and Pietro Locatelli.
