    Exporting Zionism: Architectural Modernism in Israeli-African Technical Cooperation, 1958-1973 Ayala Levin Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy under the Executive Committee of the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY 2015 © 2015 Ayala Levin All rights reserved ABSTRACT Exporting Zionism: Architectural Modernism in Israeli-African Technical Cooperation, 1958-1973 Ayala Levin This dissertation explores Israeli architectural and construction aid in the 1960s – “the African decade” – when the majority of sub-Saharan African states gained independence from colonial rule. In the Cold War competition over development, Israel distinguished its aid by alleging a postcolonial status, similar geography, and a shared history of racial oppression to alleviate fears of neocolonial infiltration. I critically examine how Israel presented itself as a model for rapid development more applicable to African states than the West, and how the architects negotiated their professional practice in relation to the Israeli Foreign Ministry agendas, the African commissioners' expectations, and the international disciplinary discourse on modern architecture. I argue that while architectural modernism was promoted in the West as the International Style, Israeli architects translated it to the African context by imbuing it with nation-building qualities such as national cohesion, labor mobilization, skill acquisition and population dispersal. These proposals purposefully abandon conventional notions of the city. Soleri was physically isolated in his remote Arizona urban laboratory, Arcosanti, and philosophically detached from the professional urban design community. His proposals were often too easily understood as foreign and radical dystopian architectural metaphors meant to provoke thought more than to project an actual future. There is limited discourse on Soleri and this tends to isolate him in a vacuum, ignoring possible connections or parallels in his work and that of his contemporaries or predecessors.

    Architectural design education through history of architecture: the lesson of Bruno Zevi Paola Ardizzola PhD Architecture and Urban History School of Fine Arts and Architecture, Department of Architecture, Antalya International University, Antalya (Turkey) Abstract Bruno Zevi, born in 1918 and died in 2000, is one of the most important Italian theorists of architecture. His anti-historical and critical reading of the classical historiography has highlighted a different architectural geography, recognizing the merits of that architecture which had been improperly defined as minor or peripheral. His reading method aims to minimize the contemplative attitude in favour of the involvement and the actualization of the history of architecture, far from a historicist vision that prevents from reading the past as an irreplaceable occasion to understand and deal with the contemporary season of architecture. In his vision of history as a “methodology of architectural practice" he draws not a philological portrait of the past, but a breeding ground for "extracting the forgotten subversive components". According to Italo Calvino’s statement, a classic (in art, literature, music, architecture etc.) is something that has never finished saying what it has to say; Bruno Zevi strengthens the concept emphasizing that when good architecture of the past was built, the solutions adopted were most of the times extremely modern, so they are worth to be analysed to understand processes and ideas they subtended, and actualised in contemporaneity. Thus, it is important to learn history of architecture by the methodology of investigating what the masters of the past wanted to achieve rather than the final building just as a successful solution.

McLaren Professor Vikram Prakash Department of Architecture A powerful sense of discontinuity and rupture, a simultaneity of theory and practice as well as a critique of bourgeois art forms are some of the common features that modern and postmodern discourses share. Despite the similarities between the two movements, they tend to be portrayed and defined in perfect opposition to each other. Charles Jencks is one of the more prominent theorists who emphasized the differences between the two movements and declared the failure of modernism as a sufficient reason to legitimize the advent of postmodernism. This work attempts to understand the emergence of postmodernism through its relationship to modernism while examining the discursive dimension of the two movements. The goal of this thesis is not aimed at determining to what extent postmodernism was necessary or avoidable, definable or unintelligible, real or merely fictive. In deference to Michel Foucault's Archeology of Knowledge, it examines the reasons and conditions of its emergence, identifying the sites of continuity and rupture between modernism and postmodernism and studying the discursive formations within modernism that facilitated the appearance of postmodernism. It carries out this investigation through the writings of Jencks and in reference to three distinct yet overlapping phases that mark their evolving relationship; representing, defining and classifying.

Peter Blundell Jones 98-108 2 Introduction to the submitted documents The main submission for the PhD by publication is the monograph on Hans Scharoun which exists in two versions, that published by Gordon Fraser in 1978 and the much revised new edition by Phaidon of 1995, but appended are more specialised and recent texts that extend the interpretation. The accompanying 15,000 word commentary draws this material together in an autobiographical account to explain the pursuit of sources and the evolution of ideas and methods. Having started at the Architectural Association and forged an early relationship with Architectural Press, both leading centres of architectural discourse in the 1970s and 80s, I built a career largely through publication. I have specialised in building analysis from early on, and the Scharoun books broke new ground in this, but they also challenged the inherited story of modern architecture, with some success.
