  • A Final Trip Around the Horn
A Final Trip Around the Horn By Marc Michaelson [Transcript of a speech delivered at the Members and Trustees meeting Of the Institute ofCurrent World Affairs, Monmouth, NJ, June 18, 2000] In Ethiopia and in Eritrea, Africa's newest country, there'sfinally peace. Democracy is tak- ing root. Poverty is on the decline, and the agri- cultural sector is blossoming. Trade is expand- ing and investment is pouring in as once-leery investors seek a piece of the "African Renais- sance. That's how I had hoped to start this fi- nal report. Sorry to say, that's not the re- port I'll be giving today. When I arrived in Ethiopia in January 1998, the country was full of hope. That's why I'd applied for an ICWA fellowship to learn about all the exciting progress in Ethiopia and Eritrea. Unfortunately, things have once again turned sour in the disas- ter-prone Horn of Africa. A snapshot shows the region riddled with all the familiar trag- The author edies: famine, war, forced displacement, floods, fires, droughts and the plague of AIDS. To complete the biblical cycle of calamity, I've been expecting the lo- custs to arrive any day. It's a tasteless joke, but that's what we expatriates have been reduced to bad humor is a coping mechanism for those of us who are frustrated, standing helplessly by as our host nation self-destructs before our very eyes. Today I'd like to share a few observations and stories from my ICWA travels. Like my fellowship, this will be a whirlwind tour of sorts jumping from topic to topic and place to place.

Blackwx ell Publishing Ltd Making the Perfect Queen: The Cultural Production of Identities in Beauty Pageants Rebecca Chiyoko King-O’Riain* National University of Ireland Abstract Beauty queens are symbolic representations of collective cultural indentities and beauty pageants are fields of active ‘cultural production’. This article surveys the growing literature on beauty pageants to better understand how culture is pro- duced within the contexts of pageants. To do so, the article examines how beauty pageants operate as sites of commodification and consumption in a world increas- ingly influenced by global markets and media institutions. It also illustrates how culture is produced in beauty pageants by examining beauty pageants as sites of oppression, sites to articulate cultural agency, and sites of ethnic, gender, cultural, and sexual identity production. Beauty pageants, whether on the local or global stage, are lively sites for the production and contestation of cultural meanings. They are fascinating cases for sociologists interested in revealing the processes of collective cultural production. Following the turn from the sociology of culture to ‘cultural sociology’ (Becker 1984), studies of popular culture have moved to focus not just on cultural objects or symbols as texts, but also to delve into the processes of their production.

Ezega.com Interviews Miss Ethiopia 2009, Chuna Okok “Beauty to me is the cumulative outcome of internal and external beauty. One will not be complete without the other.” Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, February 8, 2009 (Ezega.com) - The 2009 Miss Ethiopia beauty pageant was organized by the Ethiopian Village Adventure Playground and held on January 18, 2009, at the new Intercontinental Hotel in Addis Ababa Ethiopia. There were 20 finalists in the competition. Chuna Okok, a 22-year-old Addis Ababa University student, won the Miss Ethiopia contest, beating off the other 19 finalists. Unlike the other pageant contenders, Chuna Okok came from the Gambella region of Ethiopia and gave the competition a different and beautiful color. This second year Business and Economics student at Addis Ababa University and the 2009 Miss Ethiopia winner, Chuna Okok, held an exclusive interview with Ezega.com reporter, Eden Habtamu, at the Intercontinental Hotel in Addis Ababa. Asked how she got into the pageant contest, Chuna replied it was a push from her best friends that led her to think about it. “They believed that I have all the inward and outward beauty. So, I gave it some time and I finally decided to participate in the competition” said Chuna. According to Chuna Okok, her family in Gambella didn’t know about her competing in the Miss Ethiopia pageant until after she won the title. She said, she called her parents the day after to tell them that she won the Miss Ethiopia Pageant. But, by then, they had already heard about it minutes earlier from her cousin.

  • Afar-Issa Conflict Management
Afar-lssa Conflict Managment "In war a youth is killed, not born." Somali proverb ASWASH, Ethiopia January 2000 By Marc Michaelson It's just after 5 p.m. The scorching sun plunges into free-fall and a warm dusty breeze brushes the flatlands. Returning from an aborted visit to Afa'assey, our Toyota Landcruiser pulls into Gadamaytu, a disputed town on the border between Ethiopia's Afar and Somali Regions. We park in front of a square mud hut, pass an armed guard at the entrance, and find a dozen Issa elders sitting in the backyard, chewing khat and plotting strategy for the following day's alMssa peace consolidation meeting. The hut is packed with large bundles of contraband used clothes smuggled by camel from neighboring Djibouti. Unfazed, a high-ranking Somali official pre- sides over the khat-chewing and discussion. The scene reeks of parody else- where in the world, a politician sharing drugs with constituents in a room brimming with illegal goods would be the subject of high drama. Among Soma- lis it is business as usual. The irony is lost on all but myself, and is quickly overshadowed by the seri- ousness of the deliberations. The EPRDF (Ethiopian People's Revolutionary Demo- cratic Front) government, and especially the Afar and Somali Regional administrations, have worked hard to restore stability and peace to the north- eastern lowlands the traditional home and battleground of the Afar and Issa people. The next day's meeting of all 12 Issa family trees endeavors to unify and solidify the Issa in preparation for a joint Afar-Issa peace meeting in Awash toWn a few days later.
