pejzaże kultury Urszula Chowaniec Feminism Today, or Re-visiting Polish Feminist Literary Scholarship Since 1990s Almost every time the gendered perspective on a particular issue (so often called oblique- ly the woman’s voice) appears in the media, it is immediately confronted by the almost for- mulaic expression “feminism today,” which suggests instantaneously that feminism is, in fact, a matter of the past, and that if one needs to return to this phenomenon, then it requires some explanation. Such interconnections between gender, women and feminism are a con- stant simplifi cation. The article seeks to elaborate this problem of generalization expressed by such formulas as “feminism today.”1 “Feminism today” is a particular notion, which indeed refers to the long political, social, economic and cultural struggles and transformations for equality between the sexes, but also implies the need for its up-dating. Feminism seems to be constantly asked to supply footnotes as to why the contemporary world might still need it, as though equality had been undeniably achieved. This is the common experience of all researchers and activists who deal with the ques- tioning of the traditional order. Even though the order examined by feminism for over 200 years has been changed almost all over the world to various extents, the level of equal- ity achieved is debatable and may still be improved in all countries. Nevertheless, the word feminism has become an uncomfortable word; hence its usage always requires some justi- fi cation. During the past few years in Britain, attempts to re-defi ne feminism may be noted in various media. -

An account of the events — INTRODUCTION — INTRODUCTION On June 20, 2014, the Malta Festival Poznań cancelled the performance of the play Golgota Picnic, one of the leading events of the festival’s 24th edition. The play was scheduled to be performed on June 27 and 28 at the Zamek Cultural Centre. The author of the piece, Rodrigo García, was the curator of the festi- val’s Thematic Idiom Latin America: Mestizos. The decision to cancel the performance — the result of unprecedented attacks by Catholic groups, and the pow- erlessness of the state — sparked a media scandal, and quickly became a question of public interest. This happened because the issue of Golgota Picnic had became another in a series of events that had tested the limits of Polish democ- racy. -

IETM REPORT www.ietm.org Transnational unions to revive democracy Europe is in crisis: political, economic, humanitarian, and environmental, but also, a crisis of imagination. That was the common starting point from where the moderator opened the session and the speakers presented their alternative political and civic projects aimed at reinventing Europe and reviving democracy. As Ivana Nenadović said, if there is nobody else doing it for you, you have to step out of your comfort zone and do it yourself. Let’s not just change leaders and parties, let’s change the system altogether – by returning democracy to its sovereign: the citizens. Contrary to the populist focus on the nation-state or the EU-centrist models, the speakers sought for a solution in building transnational unions that bring citizens closer while keeping their regional © Silke Schmidt / Regine Heiland identities and reinforcing civil societies across Europe.
