Timothy J. Littlewood and Peter D. Olson The strategies of gene sequencing and gene characterisation in phylogenetic studies are frequently determined by a balance between cost and benefit, where benefit is measured in terms of the amount of phylogenetic signal resolved for a given problem at a specific taxonomic level. Generally, cost is far easier to predict than benefit. Building upon existing databases is a cost-effective means by which molecular data may rapidly contribute to addressing systematic problems. As technology advances and gene sequencing becomes more affordable and accessible to many researchers, it may be surprising that certain genes and gene products remain favoured targets for systematic and phylogenetic studies. In particular, ribosomal DNA (rDNA), and the various RNA products transcribed from it continue to find utility in wide ranging groups of organisms. The small (SSU) and large subunit (LSU) rDNA fragments especially lend themselves to study as they provide an attractive mix of constant sites that enable multiple alignments between homologues, and variable sites that provide phylogenetic signal (Hillis and Dixon 1991; Dixon and Hillis 1993). Ribosomal RNA (rRNA) is also the commonest nucleic acid in any cell and thus was the prime target for sequencing in both eukaryotes and prokaryotes during the early history of SSU nucleotide based molecular systematics (Olsen and Woese 1993). In particular, the SSU gene (rDNA) and gene product (SSU rRNA1) have become such established sources of taxonomic and systematic markers among some taxa that databanks dedicated to the topic have been developed and maintained with international and governmental funding (e.g. -

Moreover, recent molecular studies on sunfish taxonomy revealed the presence of two Edited by: species belonging to the genus Mola in the Mediterranean basin, namely M. mola and Rachel E. Marschang, M. alexandrini. These two fish taxa have long been synonymized or confused among Laboklin GmbH & Co. Although the morphology of A. contortum agrees with that of a typical endoparasitic trematode, with two relatively small suckers and no large holdfasts, this parasite is normally ectoparasitic. The main objective of this paper is to explore this peculiar host-parasite relationship. Methods: A total of 106 ocean sunfish were examined for the presence of A. contortum. The oropharyngeal chamber (gills and pharynx) and the digestive tract were analysed. As the previous descriptions of this species seem to be based on contracted specimens, for the morphological study the parasites were killed using two methods: with hot 70 % ethanol (with relaxed bodies) and with 70 % ethanol at room temperature (with contracted bodies). For histological studies, samples from fresh fish with parasitised left gills, pharynx and digestive tract were fixed in buffered 10 % formalin. For molecular studies the 18S, 28S and ITS-2 sequences were provided and compared with the available data in GenBank®. Results: New information on the morphology of A. contortum and on the parasite-related response and pathological alterations in the host are given. This species is the first monogenean to be recorded from the gills of Paracaesio sordida. The new species is characterized by the following features: (i) haptor short, with clamps arranged in two equal bilateral rows; (ii) testes numerous, arranged in two roughly alternating long- itudinal rows, extending into the haptor; (iii) genital atrium armed with 16 robust spines, which are vertically arranged on top of the sausage shaped muscular male copulatory organ; and (iv) single vagina, bottle-shaped, with a distinctly bulbous vaginal atrium. The terminals of the reproductive system discriminate Paracaesicola n. gen. from all other genera in the Microcotylidae. Molecular phylogenetic analyses, based on partial 28S rDNA, places Paracaesicola nanshaensis n. sp. within the microcotylid clade, but its sequence differs from all known available microcotylid sequences. -

Devido à escassez de trabalhos relacionados ao parasitismo no mundo, sendo assim, percebe-se a importância de realizar uma revisão bibliográfica em artigos científicos, dissertações e teses em bancos de dados e periódicos de fácil acesso para os estudantes e pesquisadores acerca das ocorrências de parasitas em M. mola entre os anos de 1904 - 2017. A espécie de peixe conhecida popularmente como peixe lua (Mola mola: Molidae) são encontrados em todos os oceanos do mundo. O parasitismo pode ser uma das possíveis causas de encalhe desta família no Brasil, uma vez que existe um número de publicações cientificas reduzida de relatos de ocorrência da espécie M. mola. Foram encontrados 51 trabalhos relacionados a parasitos da espécie Mola mola no mundo, no estudo foram registradas 44 espécies de parasitos e 9 espécies são sinônimos, ou seja, são parasitos conhecidos por mais de um nome. O estudos possibilitou encontrar a ocorrência de parasitária
