Champaign County Historical Archives Chanute Air Force Base: 75 Year Pictorial History COLLECTION 200.004 Champaign County Historical Archives Compiled by: Thomas Kuipers Creator/Corporate name: Chanute Air Force Base Inclusive Dates: 1917-2000s Physical Description: 8 boxes, 7.5 linear feet Provenance: The Chanute Air Force Base 75-year pictorial history records were donated to the Champaign County Historical Archives from the defunct Octave Chanute Aerospace Museum upon their closure in 2016. The records in this collection were originally curated and arranged by Donald O. Weckhorst. Access: The records are accessible to the public within applicable copyright restrictions and limited to use at the Champaign County Historical Archives of The Urbana Free Library. Historical Note: In 1983, Commanding Officer Major General J.D. Moore hired Chief Master Sergeant and Chanute alum Donald O. Weckhorst to be the Chanute Air Force Base historian. Moore tasked Weckhorst with creating a pictorial history book of the base. From 1983-1992, Weckhorst contacted former and active Chanute students, instructors, civilians, and more from throughout the entirety of the base’s history seeking sources for the book. This collection contains the donations, correspondence, and other personal records Weckhorst received from more than 300 former Chanute airmen, which were used for the creation of the 1992 publication 75 Year Pictorial History: Chanute Air Force Base. Scope and Content Note: This collection spans nearly the entire history of CAFB as an active military institution from 1917-1993. The bulk of the materials come from Chanute service people that served from the 1910s-1950s. The collection includes considerable correspondence between former service people and base historian Donald Weckhorst. There are also photographs that can and cannot be found within the 75 Year Pictorial History book. In addition, there is also numerous types of military records, such as orders, assignments, pamphlets, menus, histories of service, and more, as well as newspaper clippings and some publications. Arrangement: Files are arranged by last name. Each file typically starts with correspondence and ends with ephemera and newspaper clippings. Most photographs lack metadata, so they are typically listed simply as ‘photographs’. Item level description was implemented for many files throughout the collection to provide more in-depth description. Subject Terms: Chanute Air Force Base (Ill.) PUB DATE Oct 70 NOTE 283p. EDRS PRICE EDRS Price MF-$1.25 HC-$14.25 DESCRIPTORS *Directories, *Government Libraries, *Libraries, *National Libraries, School Libraries, Special Libraries ABSTRACT This Roster of Federal Libraries represents an attempt by the Federal Library Committee to identify each of the more than 1,900 individual libraries serving the many departments, committees, agencies, courts, and other formal organizational entities in the Federal Government. They include six types: Presidential, national, general, academic, school, and special or technical. Part I of the three part roster is arranged, alphabetically, within the designated Branches of the Government, then by country, state and city. Part II provides a geographic arrangement, first by country alphabetically, then by state, city, department and bureau. Part III is a listing, alphabetically, by general subject category or type of library. Within the subjects the libraries are arranged by country, state, city, department and bureau. A descriptive explanation and index to contents precedes each of the three parts. A National Plan for Federal Library Statistics has been designed by the Federal Library Committee's Subcommittee on Statistical Programs. It is scheduled for testing in fiscal year 1971 and implementation starting in fiscal year 1972. The Plan will permit accurate, annual identification of Federal libraries. Rosters, based upon information received, will be issued on a regular basis.

You now have a program. We designed this Historical Handbook of National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency Leaders as a useful reference work for anyone who needs fundamental information on the leaders of the NGA. We have included those colleagues over the years who directed the National Imagery and Mapping Agency (NIMA) and the component agencies and services that came together to initiate NGA-NIMA history in 1996. The NGA History Program Staff did not celebrate these individuals in this setting, although in reading any of these short biographies you will quickly realize that we have much to celebrate. Rather, this practical book is designed to permit anyone to reach back for leadership information to satisfy any personal or professional requirement from analysis, to heritage, to speechwriting, to retirement ceremonies, to report composition, and on into an endless array of possible tasks that need support in this way. We also intend to use this book to inform the public, especially young people and students, about the nature of the people who brought NGA to its present state of expertise.
