Russell, 1904 Transcribed by Wayne Kraus for Jacob Boehme Online INTRODUCTION "JERUSALEM," the longest and the most splendid of the Prophetical Books engraved by WILLIAM BLAKE, was first published in the form of one hundred pages of text and illustrations, dated from South Molton Street, 1804, though this date represents rather the beginning than the conclusion of its composition. It has been twice reproduced in facsimile, once separately, and once (much reduced), in the three volume edition of Blake's works by Messrs. Ellis and Yeats in 1893, but it has never hitherto been printed in ordinary type; and those who have tried to study the Prophetical Books will realize the need for such a text if reading and reference are to be possible with- out the inordinate strain and fatigue involved in the use of a. facsimile. It is only when the complete works of Blake are readily accessible and legible that we may hope that the greatest of English mystics will be adequately studied and appreciated; and if this is to be, the divorce of the poem from its illus- trations is an imperative, though none the less regrettable necessity. It has been our endeavour in the present edition to produce a text which shall be above all else scrupulously faithful to the original, for easy reference to which we have retained the division and numbering of its pages. The text, down to the very eccentricities and inconsistencies of Blake's spelling, is as accurate as we have been able to make it. -

The twenty-third psalm has been offered as comfort to the sick and the grieving for thousands ofyears now, with its image ofGod as the good shepherd and the soul beloved ofGod as the protected sheep. This psalm, and such equally well-known passages as Isaiah's "He shall feed his flock as a shepherd: he shall gather the lambs in his arms" (40. 11), together with the specifically Christian version: "I am the good shepherd" (John 10. 11, 14), have obviously affected the whole pastoral tradition in European literature. Among othereffects the conceptofGod as shepherd has allowed for development of the protective implications of classical pastoral. The pastoral idyll-as opposed to the pastoral elegy suggests a safe, rural world in that corruption, confusion and danger are placed elsewhere-in the city. -

PETER HEATH All Text and No Image Makes Blake a Dull Artist: Inseparable Interplay Between Poetry and Picture in Blake's Multimedia Art W.J.T. Mitchell opens his book Blake's Composite Art by saying that “it has become superfluous to argue that Blake's poems need to be read with their accompanying illustrations” (3); in his mind, the fact that Blake's work consists of both text and image is obvious, and he sets out to define when and how the two media function independently of one another. However, an appraisal of prominent anthologies like The Norton Anthology of English Literature and Duncan Wu's Romanticism shows that Mitchell's sentiment is not universal, as these collections display Blake's Songs of Innocence and Experience as primarily poetic texts, and include the illuminated plates for very few of the works.1 These seldom-presented pictorial accompaniments suggests that the visual aspect is secondary; 1 The Longman Anthology of British Literature features more of Blake's illuminations than the Norton and Romanticism, including art for ten of Blake's Songs. It does not include all of the “accompanying illustrations,” however, suggesting that the Longman editors still do not see the images as essential. at the EDGE http://journals.library.mun.ca/ate Volume 1 (2010) 93 clearly anthology editors, who are at least partially responsible for constructing canons for educational institutions, do not agree with Mitchell’s notion that we obviously must (and do) read Blake’s poems and illuminations together. Mitchell rationalizes the segregated study of Blake by suggesting that his “composite art is, to some extent, not an indissoluble unity, but an interaction between two vigorously independent modes of expression” (3), a statement that in fact undoes itself. -

Contrary to State catechism delivered through our schools, America was not born a democracy; rather it emerged as a republic with a distinct bias against democracy. Nonetheless we inherit a great demotic heritage. Abolition, the labor struggle, women’s suffrage, and Civil Rights, for example, struck mighty blows against the established political and economic power of the State. State political economies, whether capitalist, socialist, or communist, each express characteristics of a slave society. All feature oppression, exploitation, starvation, and destitution as constitutive elements. In order to survive in our capitalist society, the average person must sell the contents of her life in exchange for a wage. Fundamentally, I challenge the equation of State schooling with public and/or democratic education. Our schools have not historically belonged to a democratic public. Rather, they have been created, funded, and managed by an elite class wielding local, state, and federal government as its executive arms. Schools are economic institutions, serving a division of labor in the reproduction of the larger economy. Rather than the school, our workplaces are the chief educational institutions of our lives. -

The pleasures of reading The Book of Thel, once the poem is understood, are very nearly unique among the pleasures of litera ture. Though the poem ends in voluntary negation, its tone until the vehement last section is a technical triumph over the problem of depicting a Beulah world in which all contraries are equally true. Thel's world is precariously beautiful; one false phrase and its looking-glass reality would be shattered, yet Blake's diction re mains firm even as he sets forth a vision of fragility. Had Thel been able to maintain herself in Experience, she might have re covered Innocence within it. The poem's last plate shows a serpent guided by three children who ride upon him, as a final emblem of sexual Generation tamed by the Innocent vision. The mood of the poem culminates in regret, which the poem's earlier tone prophe sied. VISIONS OF THE DAUGHTERS OF ALBION The heroine of Visions of the Daughters of Albion ( 1793), Oothoon, is the redemption of the timid virgin Thel. Thel's final griefwas only pathetic, and her failure of will a doom to vegetative self-absorption. Oothoon's fate has the dignity of the tragic. -

126 Of the fifty-three more-or-less complete copies of Blake's writings in private hands, only one has moved to a public collection: VICTORIA UNIVERSITY IN THE UNIVERSITY OF TORONTO. This is Songs of Innocence and of Experience (i), a posthumous copy watermarked with fragments of J WHATMAN | 1831, lacking ten of fifty-four prints. A curious feature of copy i is that one print (pl. 23) is watercoloured (see Illus. 1A), perhaps by Catherine Blake (d. 18 October 1831 [BR (2) 546]) or Frederick Tatham who printed the posthumous copies of Blake's works in Illuminated Printing. The colouring is distinct from the colour-printed copy of the same etching in VICTORIA UNIVERSITY IN THE UNIVERSITY OF TORONTO. The public appearance of Songs (i) has permitted the correction of minor errors in the account of it in Blake Books. COPIES UNTRACED America (S), Book of Thel (S), Descriptive Catalogue (V), Europe (N), First Book of Urizen (K), For Children (F), Poetical Sketches (Q), Songs of Innocence and of Experience (CC, q), "To the Public", Visions (S) are untraced. Six of these ten untraced copies in Illuminated Printing - - America (S), Book of Thel (S), Europe (N), First Book of Urizen (K), For Children (F), and Visions (S) -- have not been recorded since they were sold for the Flaxman family in 1862. Some or all the untraced copies may have been destroyed. Different plates will yield different reactions, and new terrifying aspects will be rendered. Consider The Tyger; differing plates created over the course of Blake’s display of this particular work are evocative of different feelings. The titular tiger is sometimes viewed as non-threatening, and other times there is a palpable fear.
