Lajna Matters 2nd Quarter Issue, 2014 2 of 44 O Prophet! Tell thy wives and thy daughters and the women of the believers that they should draw close to them portions of their loose outer coverings. That is nearer that they may thus be distinguished and not molested. And Allah is Most Forgiving, Merciful (33:60). O children of Adam! Look to your adornment at every time and place of worship, and eat and drink but exceed not the bounds; surely, He does not love those who exceed the bounds (7:32). Call upon your Lord in humility and in secret. Surely, He does not love the transgressors (7:56). Ahadith Abu Sa’id Khudri relates that the Holy Prophetsaw was more modest than a virgin behind her veil and that when something displeased him we could perceive it from his face (Bukhari & Muslim). Abdullah Ibn Umar narrated that the Holy Prophetsaw said, ‘Indeed Haya’a (modesty) and Iman (faith) are companions. When one of them is lifted, the other leaves as well’ (Baihaqi). Hazrat Ubadah bin as-Samit relates that the Holy Prophetsaw said, ‘If you guarantee me six things on your part, I shall guarantee you Paradise: Speak the truth when you talk Keep a promise when you make it When you are trusted with something fulfill your trust Avoid sexual immorality Lower your eyes Restrain your hands from injustice’ (Tirmidhi) 3 of 44 Lajna Matters 2nd Quarter Issue, 2014 Writings of the Promised Messiahas The lawful Purdah is that you should make a sort of ring with the Chaaddur (shawl) to cover the head and the hair, covering up the forehead and the chin, and cover up every place of your beauty (Khutba 1/30/2004). The Islamic system of the veil does not at all require women to be shut up as in a prison. What the Holy Qur’an directs is that women should avoid displaying their beauty and should not look at strange men. Those women who have to go out in order to fulfill their responsibilities may do so, but they must guard their glances (Malfoozat Vol 1 p. 430). As God Almighty desires that our eyes and hearts and all our limbs and our susceptibilities should remain pure, He has furnished us with this excellent teaching. There can be no doubt that lack of restraint causes missteps. If we place soft bread before a hungry dog, it will be vain to hope that the dog will pay no attention to it. Thus God Almighty desired that human faculties should not be provided with any occasion for secret functioning and should not be confronted with anything that might incite dangerous tendencies (Ruhani Khaza’in, Vol. 10, pp 343, 344). A fair minded person will appreciate that the free mixing of men and women and their going about together would expose them to the risk of succumbing to the flare of their emotions. It has been observed that some people see no harm in a man and a woman being alone together behind closed doors. This is considered civilized behavior. To avoid such untoward situations from arising, the Law Giver of Islam has forbidden such acts as might prove to be a temptation for anyone (Malfoozat Vol 5, p33). National Correspondence Message from Sadr Lajna Ima’illah—Saliha Malik My Dear Sisters, The observance of Purdah, which includes the separation of the sexes in all social and religious functions, is a fundamental part of Islam. Living in our Western permissive society, we often stand alone with these values of modesty. However, Allah’s plan for the purification of people, both as individuals and for the society as a whole, becomes clear to all those who resolve and remain steadfast in this practice. Allah promises in the Holy Qur’an: ‘And as for those who strive in Our path — We will surely guide them in Our ways. And verily Allah is with those who do good’ (29:70). Therefore, when a girl or a woman takes up the hijab and her observance of Purdah in all sincerity, all kinds of doors open for her and she grows in moral and spiritual ways from strength to strength. In facing any challenges on that journey she may even directly experience how Allah Almighty comes with His Loving Support and Helping Power to those who strive in keeping His commandments. Even unexpected worldly opportunities come her way. The touch of Grace from Allah the Almighty, in the face of any difficulty encountered in His Way, makes the heart bow down in profound gratitude and gives the supplicant lasting joy and deepens her faith, and Allah is the most Beneficent. The benefits of remaining steadfast in Purdah are many: We confront our egos – face up to vanity and self image We gain inner strength and courage, and yet we are not defiant We resolve to honor our pledge, increase in truthfulness, honesty and obedience to Allah and His Messenger We seek help from Allah in Prayer which helps us increase in humility and become closer to Him We encourage others by our example We spread the true Islam with our practice We represent the Community of the Promised Messiahas and stay loyal to Khilafat It is my earnest prayer that may Allah the Almighty enable every Ahmadi Lajna member in Jama’at USA to sincerely strive in the way of purdah, for her own progress and for the progress of our community. Our experience of security and peace in our own lives, our families and for our community is deeply contingent upon our obedience to Khilafat (24:56). May Allah bless each and every one of us in this most important Jihad, Ameen. DATED: 23-09-2015 33RD MAJLIS ANSARULLAH IJTEMA UK CONCLUDES IN LONDON WITH ADDRESS BY HEAD OF AHMADIYYA MUSLIM COMMUNITY More than 3,100 people from across the UK and abroad attend event On 20 September 2015, the World Head of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community, the Fifth Khalifa (Caliph), His Holiness, Hazrat Mirza Masroor Ahmad delivered the concluding address at the 32nd National Ijtema (Annual Gathering) of Majlis Ansarullah UK. The 3-day event, which was attended by more than 3,100 people from across the United Kingdom and abroad, was held at the Baitul Futuh Mosquecomplex in south-west London. During his address, Hazrat Mirza Masroor Ahmad referred to the fact that Majlis Ansarullah was celebrating its 75th anniversary in 2015. His Holiness said that the anniversary would only be worthy of celebration if it led to a moral and spiritual improvement amongst the members of the auxiliary organisation. Hazrat Mirza Masroor Ahmad said: “Celebrating the 75th anniversary of Majlis Ansarullah will only prove beneficial if it is a means of increasing your bond with God Almighty and motivates you towards self-analysis and spiritual reformation. If however, the anniversary only entails superficial celebrations or temporary improvements then there will be no benefit.” Hazrat Mirza Masroor Ahmad continued: “In the overall scheme of things 75 years is not of itself a huge period of time or especially significant. There are a number of organisations that are just as old or even older. However, we see that, over time, such groups deviate from their original objectives and consequently their benefit to the world declines.

  • Pakistan Response Towards Terrorism: a Case Study of Musharraf Regime
PAKISTAN RESPONSE TOWARDS TERRORISM: A CASE STUDY OF MUSHARRAF REGIME By: SHABANA FAYYAZ A thesis Submitted to the University of Birmingham For the degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY Department of Political Science and International Studies The University of Birmingham May 2010 University of Birmingham Research Archive e-theses repository This unpublished thesis/dissertation is copyright of the author and/or third parties. ABSTRACT The ranging course of terrorism banishing peace and security prospects of today’s Pakistan is seen as a domestic effluent of its own flawed policies, bad governance, and lack of social justice and rule of law in society and widening gulf of trust between the rulers and the ruled. The study focused on policies and performance of the Musharraf government since assuming the mantle of front ranking ally of the United States in its so called ‘war on terror’. The causes of reversal of pre nine-eleven position on Afghanistan and support of its Taliban’s rulers are examined in the light of the geo-strategic compulsions of that crucial time and the structural weakness of military rule that needed external props for legitimacy. The flaws of the response to the terrorist challenges are traced to its total dependence on the hard option to the total neglect of the human factor from which the thesis develops its argument for a holistic approach to security in which the people occupy a central position.

  • The Life, Teachings and Influence of Muhammad Ibn Abdul-Wahhaab 3
The Life, Teachings and Influence of Muhammad ibn Abdul-Wahhaab 3 I The Motivation Behind This Work This book is not one with a political agenda. It is meant neither to support nor to critique any contemporary regimes or policies.1 Indeed, the driving force behind this work is much greater and more important than that. It has to do with, first, the religion of Islam as preached by the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) himself and, second, with the honor and rights of an individual Muslim, Muhammad ibn Abdul-Wahhaab. The name Muhammad ibn Abdul-Wahhaab (and correspondingly “Wahhabis” and “Wahhabism”) has been heard quite often throughout both the Muslim and non-Muslim worlds during the past two centuries. In reality, ibn Abdul-Wahhaab is not a man who is “shrouded in mystery.” His writings, as well as the writings of his closest students and descendents, are well-known and easily available today in virtually any part of the world. Although he is not shrouded in mystery what has been said about him over the years has definitely been filled with both fact and fiction. Muhammad ibn Abdul-Wahhaab was both a fellow human being and a fellow Muslim. As such, he has the right to be studied in an impartial and objective manner. That is, he has the right to a “fair trial.” No matter how much one may oppose his teachings, one does 1 This means that many issues that are bandied about today must be considered beyond the scope of this particular work.

See Pls.’ Opp. to Gov’t Officials’ MTD 11- 17. The Ninth Circuit’s decision in Fazaga directly supports Plaintiffs’ standing. In addition to other relief, the plaintiffs sought the expungement of all information obtained or derived through the program and maintained by the government. Id. at *28-29. Name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful .......... The HOPE Bulletin ……….. Health, Ongoing Projects, Education (Vol. 4:3) September 2009 AAIIL Worldwide Edition Editor: Akbar Abdullah CALIFORNIA JAMA‘AT PROJECT: APPROVED BY THE CENTRAL ANJUMAN, LAHORE INTRODUCTION In this, the September 2009 edition of The HOPE Bulletin, we are pleased to introduce a new column, “History: Memoirs of Jama‘at (in the country under discussion)”. We have decided to begin with our Jama‘at in Indonesia where our revered muballig, Mirza Wali Ahmad Beg (1890-1971), missionary from Lahore, made a lasting impact within our Jama‘at in Indonesia. Captain Abdus Salam Khan, the author of the article on the life and mission of Mirza Wali Beg, has this to say: “He was not only a missionary; he was also a visionary and revolutionary. He was an ardent freedom lover and took an active part in the Khilafat Movement....” While covering this article we obtained valuable information from Dr. Zahid Aziz, Editor, The Light, UK edition, who has collected a reservoir of historical information about our elders of the Jama‘at. Now we are seeking from our worldwide Jama‘ats articles on the life and mission of our elite missionaries from Lahore who had influenced the growth and preservation of Jama‘ats in their respective regions. We would like to learn more about the life and mission of Maulana Sheikh Muhammad Tufail, Raja Bedar and others who had an impact in the growth of our Jama‘ats in the Caribbean countries of Trinidad, Suriname and Guyana. We also plan to cover the life and mission of Professor Muhammad Abdullah, and missionaries Mirza Muzaffar Beg and Hafiz Sher Muhammad who left a lasting impact and legacy on the growth and survival of our Jama‘at in the Fiji Islands.

THE METACOLONIAL STATE: PAKISTAN, THE DEOBAND ‘ULAMA AND THE BIOPOLITICS OF ISLAM by Najeeb A. Jan A dissertation submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy (History) in The University of Michigan 2010 Doctoral Committee: Professor Juan R. Cole, Co-Chair Professor Nicholas B. Dirks, Co-Chair, Columbia University Professor Alexander D. Knysh Professor Barbara D. Metcalf HAUNTOLOGY © Najeeb A. Jan DEDICATION Dedicated to my beautiful mother Yasmin Jan and the beloved memory of my father Brian Habib Ahmed Jan ii ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS There are many people to whom I owe my deepest gratitude for bringing me to this stage and for shaping the world of possibilities. Ones access to a space of thought is possible only because of the examples and paths laid by the other. I must begin by thanking my dissertation committee: my co-chairs Juan Cole and Nicholas Dirks, for their intellectual leadership, scholarly example and incredible patience and faith. Nick’s seminar on South Asia and his formative role in Culture/History/Power (CSST) program at the University of Michigan were vital in setting the critical and interdisciplinary tone of this project. Juan’s masterful and prolific knowledge of West Asian histories, languages and cultures made him the perfect mentor. I deeply appreciate the intellectual freedom and encouragement they have consistently bestowed over the years. Alexander Knysh for his inspiring work on Ibn ‘Arabi, and for facilitating several early opportunity for teaching my own courses in Islamic Studies. And of course my deepest thanks to Barbara Metcalf for unknowingly inspiring this project, for her crucial and sympathetic work on the Deoband ‘Ulama and for her generous insights and critique.
