January 6th Classes Resume Revenue Purpose Statement

On behalf of the Board of Education and the Center Point- Urbana District, for your support of the Revenue Purpose Statement. The measure passed with 84.2% of the vote.

UNIFIED CHAMPION SCHOOL Being a Unified Champion School, and now school district, elicits many positive emotions and feelings for all those involved. The laughing by the students at our primary, the smiling faces of the high school students working with them, and the positive atmosphere of anyone who comes into contact with our Unified PE program. This is the second year of high school Leisure Fitness students going to the primary to build relationships, teach skills and most importantly have fun and smile with our friends in preschool, kindergarten, 1st and 2nd grades. In addition to Leisure Fitness participating in Unified PE our school district hosts a Unified Champion Day at the high school the first Wednesday in May. Last year the event was life changing for many involved and will continue to grow and be a successful event. We have every single student come to our high school campus from their buildings to have a day of play. Our school also CPU Administration: participates in Respect Week and our Stormtroopers lead this event to show respect to all students across Superintendent Matt Berninghaus the district. By being part of these special programs our schools were awarded a $4,000 grant toward to use HS Principal Rob Libolt for our Unified Champions School Program. The grant will be used to reach students in all four buildings MS Principal KC Tupa through our program. Many items will be able to be used during Unified PE, our Unified Champion Day and INT Principal Jon Hasleiet Respect Week. This award will continue to help us improve and grow our program, and we are grateful to PRI Principal Ann Wooldridge receive this Grant from Special Olympics Iowa for CPU Nation.

CPU SCHOOL BOARD 2019-2020

Joshua Katcher (District 1, Board President): I live in Urbana with my wife Amy and four daughters, Adrianna (12th), Kora (10th, Deni (6th), and Izzy (4th). We have two dogs Herky and Scout. I'm a certified financial advisor for Discerning Wealth of which I'm a part owner. I graduated from UNI with a teaching degree, and was a teacher for 6 years. I brag to everyone, everywhere I go, about how this community is full of volunteers and involved parents! It's a goal of mine that every child in our district be treated not only with respect but fairly, and that they will thrive in a life full of purpose because of the great education and experience they had here at CPU.

Jane Dufoe (At-Large, Board Vice-President): Landon (1989) and I are raising 5th generation CPU students. We have four children: Raegan(19), Lauren (18), Joseph (16), and Jonathan (10). I am heavily involved in the youth soccer programs, the CPU Foundation, and am currently Vice-President for both the Sports Boosters and the Board of Education. Our biggest asset at CPU is the human factor; the people who work with our kids are wonderful. We are small enough to provide personal attention to our students, but large enough to offer a wide range of opportunities. My goal for our district is to make our decisions based on what is good for students and maintain our excellent reputation while still looking for opportunities to improve.

Teresa Davis (District 2): I have lived in the district for 13 years. I was born and raised in Vinton, IA where my husband and dad work together on our family farm. My husband Jason is a CPU alum. During the day, you will find me at Alliant Energy managing a team of individuals to accomplish our daily, monthly, and yearly goals. I have 2 daughters at CPU High School, a freshman and a junior, both are very involved in the wonderful variety of activities this district offers for our kids. Fun Fact, my Great Uncle Bill Rhinehart owned the Rhinehart Texaco here in Center Point many years ago. At CPU, I am grateful for the programs introduced at the Primary level to teach our kids about being part of a Caring Community, having a Positive Attitude, and becoming an Upstanding Citizen. We carry this theme all the way through high school, and as a result, we have great kids at all levels. The Board regularly receives letters of appreciation regarding our kids’ behaviors at events, festivals, and competitions. I look forward to working with our Administrators to provide programs for our kids that will prepare them for the future and the local job markets. Personally, I would love to see CPU add an Ag Program/FFA at the high school.

Matthew Wade (District 3): My wife Sheryl and I are graduates of CPU (1990). We have 3 children, Alyssa (2017), Alex (2020) and Addilyn (2025). Our biggest asset is our staff and is the reason we are recognized as one of the best school districts in the area. Whenever I speak with people outside the district about CPU, they usually comment that they have heard of us and our great reputation. My goal for CPU is that every decision within our district is made with our mission in mind: “develop successful, life-long learners by providing a safe and caring environment, a stimulating curriculum, and a dedicated staff working with supportive parents in a friendly, small-town atmosphere.”

Don Westendorf (At Large): My family and I moved to Urbana in 2005. My wife, Kelli, and I have three children - Donnie (11), Lillie (10) and Ollie (6). We are very active in many organizations within the CPU community. I serve as a Captain for the Urbana Volunteer Fire Department, an EMS First Responder, youth sports coach and the CPU High School Assistant Wrestling Coach. I have enjoyed coaching high school football and wrestling for 14 years at three different school districts. I also currently serve as Scoutmaster for the CPU Cub Scout Pack 55 and am an Urbana City Council member. I also support the organizations my wife is involved in - CPU PTO, Urbana Visioning Committee and Girl Scouts. The best quality I see in the CPU School District is the people. The community as a whole has the feel of a small town, but provides the students many of the opportunities large school districts are able to. My vision for the school district is to maintain this focus while continuing to provide opportunities for students and leaning on each other for support. I look forward to my new role as a member of the CPU School Board.

HIGH SCHOOL NEWS Holiday Break: Home Conversations

The holidays are a time when family and friends gather for fun and laughter. With all the generations gathered in one place it is a great time for students to learn from older generations about their life experiences and career path. These conversations can center around the importance of education now and in the future, job responsibilities, education and training required for their field of work, hope for children’s future, and much more.

Below is a list of questions to help drive these conversations:

1. What do you love about your job? 2. What’s the best career decision you’ve ever made? 3. What’s the worst career decision you’ve ever made? 4. What would you be doing if you were me now? 5. How do you organize your time? 6. What do you think is your greatest strength? 7. What do you think is your greatest weakness? 8. How do you make decisions? 9. What do you read? 10. What do you think are the secrets behind getting to where you’ve gotten to?

From basketball in the gym, improv in the choir room, and board games in the library, there was no shortage of entertainment. Coming up next month for Student Council is decorating the high school with Christmas decor, and starting up the Secret Santa donation competition between homerooms!

INSTRUCTIONAL COACHES CORNER

Blended Learning: The CPU Way By CPU Instructional Coaches (Ellen Popenhagen, Sharon Vaupel, Dani Kremer, and Sarah Rieck)

Something exciting is taking hold in classrooms all over our district: Blended Learning!

Blended Learning is a data-driven, learner-centered instructional approach used to increase both student engagement and student achievement! It is an approach which acknowledges that not all students learn at the same pace or in the same way. Some students need direct instruction from a teacher while others need hands-on experiences. Some students learn really well in a large group setting while others do best in small groups or even on their own. Blended Learning allows both the teacher and the students the flexibility they need to be successful!

This past month, the Instructional Coaches, along with Amber Grant (our Blended Learning Integrationist) put their heads together to plan and lead a full day of professional development on the topic of Blended Learning for our district’s Blended Learning Team which encompasses 26 teachers, K-12! The Center Point Public Library graciously volunteered to host our learning, providing the perfect space for both large group and small group sessions.

Participants started their day off with three rotations on a variety of topics. Each teacher participated in a technology session hosted by Amber Grant and chose two additional topics of interest for their remaining sessions. Sessions covered the basics of Blended Learning as well as specific pieces for teachers to implement.

Our afternoon session started off with unpleasant visitors: zombies! They were overtaking our training, and if we didn’t act fast, the entire group of teachers would be turned into zombies! Teachers had to work together to crack the code and escape the zombies using their knowledge of 2-digit and 3-digit multiplication! Fortunately, they were all able to escape in the nick of time!

This was all part of our Escape Room Simulation. Escape Rooms are a great way to engage students in meaningful learning directly related to the content, while also allowing them to craft their 5Cs skills: critical thinking, collaboration, creativity, communication, and global connectedness.

Teachers ended the day having time to plan, coming up with all sorts of great ways to implement Blended Learning into their own classrooms, from pilgrim and turkey escape rooms, to using playlists to differentiate instruction and plans to teach an entire science kit in a station-rotation format! Talk about student engagement!
