Wir bewegen uns durch dunkle Räume, wähnen uns in einer Camera obscura,starren auf einen himmelwärts sprudelnden Was- serstrahl oder durch eine wandfüllende Struktur von Glaslinsen,bis wir merken, dass wir von der Gegenseite ebenfalls beäugt werden. Im Rahmen der Pressekonferenz erzählt Olafur Eliasson in sei- nem weichen, nordisch gefärbten Deutsch, dass er als Kind jeweils von Dänemark nach Island in die Ferien gefahren sei: «Damals gab es noch eine klare Trennung. Hier, in Island, ist Natur, und dort, wo wir herkommen, ist Stadt, ist Kultur.» Heute gibt es diese Zwei- teilung nicht mehr, der Mensch hat weite Bereiche der Natur zum Verschwinden gebracht. Was kann die Kunst, was können wir dem darwinschen Gesetz «Survival of the fittest» entgegensetzen? Olafur Eliassons Strategie erschliesst sich erst im steten Spiel von Ver- und Entzauberung, von Wahrnehmen und Wissen. Raum um Raum führt er uns Phänomene und Gesetzmässigkeiten der Natur vor Augen: Bleiben wir beispielsweise unter der atmosphä- rischen Nebeldecke stehen, bildet unsere Körperwärme immer heftigere Wolkenwirbel, bis sich ein Loch aufreisst und wir in die darüberliegende Deckenkonstruktion blicken. Im letzten Saal ka- tapultiert er uns ganz ins Hier und Jetzt. Die riesigen Fenster bieten freie Sicht auf den Heimplatz. Die Blickwechsel sind programma- tisch. ‹Symbiotic seeing› nennt er das – Symbiose statt Konkur- renz. Es geht ihm um eine Sensibilisierung des Blicks für die Welt als Organismus, als sym-bio-tische Lebensgemeinschaft, die wir ebenso prägen wie sie uns. Sensibilisierung führt zu Aktivierung. Was mehr können wir von Kunst erwarten? Récemment contraint de rééduquer le muscle de sa langue, il expérimente le retour à l’appren- tissage oral, pourtant acquis lors de l’enfance. Cette oralité obtenue si lointainement semble être innée, puisque son application devenue naturelle absorbe le souvenir de l’initiation. Son réapprentissage apporte alors une conscientisation gestuelle et poé- tique, catalyseur de cette présente exposition. La série Esercizi Muscolature Orofacciale per Artisti est une suite d’exercices rédi- gés initialement par le médecin Daniel Garliner. Bien que destinées à ces mêmes problématiques myofonctionnelles et utilisées à des fins cliniques, ces courtes ritour- nelles empruntent des images et des codes propres à l’univers de l’enfance et de la fable. Onomatopées, images ou métaphores, elles mobilisent davantage de sens qu’elles n’en prétendent stimuler, et rejouent l’aller-retour emprunté récemment par l’artiste dans l’apprentissage infantile.

Kelly Ruddick 23:23 and Stuart Kollmorgen 22:13 won their respective races and there were a whole swag of walkers over the 80% Age Graded Performance mark. The best were Heather Carr with 92.66% (26:59 for W60) and Bob Gardiner 90.31% (29:36 for M75). It was great to see Tony Johnson back in walking mode and doing it in fine style to win the M70 with 30:41. We also welcomed Croatian walker Sasha Radotic, currently in Australia for next weekend's Coburg 24 Hour Run – he took third in the M40 division with 27:15. Bauer, Chair Associate Professor Stephanie Foote Assistant Professor Nancy Castro Associate Professor Peter Mortensen ii Abstract A Novel Way to Learn examines the development of black fiction in tandem with black educational advancement from Reconstruction to the Harlem Renaissance. By reading education in the novels of Frances Ellen Watkins Harper, Sutton Griggs, W.E.B. Du Bois, and Jessie Redmon Fauset, I reveal an underexplored genealogy of black educational thought from initial calls for educational access to more independent, ideological, and pragmatic modes embodied in the texts of black fiction writers. Ultimately, I argue that black educational fiction constitutes a key strand of African American writing before the Harlem Renaissance. iii Acknowledgements It is only thanks to the wisdom, generosity, and guidance of many people in academia that I can write these pages of appreciation. Back in the days, in a world still inhabited by chimaeras and dragons, a chthonic creature made of fire and water was said to be rampaging across the countryside of Normandy. Their 1name was Gargouille and they resided on their own, in the vast swamplands extending across the Seine river’s left bank. Despite their withdrawn life and usual discretion, being omnivorous in their feeding habits they occasionally roamed the valley in search of food and happened to devour cattle and people on their way. At times, the meals resulted indigestible and Gargouille suffered from terrible heartburns. Their aerodigestive function was then disturbed by a peculiar form of rumination syndrome, a chronic regurgitation that had them breathing fire from their mouth. This physiological disorder resulted in farms and warehouses being burnt down, and entire fields and crops being reduced to ashes. In this article, I analyze the potential for epigenetic research to operationalize the social science theory of embodiment, which describes how the social and material worlds manifest in our physical bodies.

Concepts of chronological manipulation can be seen quite directly as well in his series of clocks, strategically shot, glass in- tact, with evident bullet holes on the frame. Nicola Martini (b. Florence, Italy, 1984 / lives and works in Milan, Italy) presents a series of sand sculptures placed like ceremonial remains on the floor and leaning on the low walls of the room. The base material of these objects is composed of thermal sand, normally used in the fabri- cation of steel and cast iron, a highly industrial process. Every grain is covered with a thermoplastic phenolic resin enhancing its ability to transfer heat. Martini highlights the untitled artworks’ composite identity with fire, by burning with a gas torch the thermal sand piles, forcing the har- dening process. The new form is inverted, revealing the Lars Dittrich and André Schlechtriem are pleased to internal side of the pile, and stabilized with epoxy resin, present As If We Never Said Goodbye, a group show exaggerating the artificiality of the material.     To the press «Ambarabà Ciccì Coccò» Alfredo Aceto and Denis Savary 15 May – 22 August 2021 Press preview: Friday, 14 May 2021, 11 a.m. Opening Day: Saturday, 15 May 2021, 11 a.m. – 5 p.m. The artistic practices of Alfredo Aceto and Denis Savary - both of whom live in the Romandie and maintain friendly relations - are as close as they are different. What they have in common is that they twist existing forms or imagine new ones across different media and charge them with unexpected meanings. In their first joint exhibition «Ambarabà Ciccì Coccò», the two artists create a fragmentary installation in which different layers of cultural signs are brought together. The title of the exhibition, borrowed from an Italian counting-out rhyme, is a linguistic expression of what permeates the spaces: An arrangement of myriad signs that evoke associations and condense into narratives. The works slipperily elude clear designation and - like the fantasised words 'Ambarabà Ciccì Coccò' - feed on their multiple levels of meaning. Forms and functions are inspired by a wide variety of sources, including art historical myths about Kurt Schwitters or the mythical creature Gargoyle, airports or bathrooms. This detachment from and oscillation between fixed meanings allows for a certain freedom in relating to the works and in the connections that can be established between them. New and existing works by both artists, as well as works produced together, are combined and activated in an installative way. In the process, unexpected connections emerge and their artistic modes of production are rethought as collaborations and as possible interventions in each other's production.

    FROM THE PRESIDENT Greetings from campus! I am confident you will enjoy our fall issue of the Bridge. Among many other stories, its pages contain this year’s advancement theme of Finlandia’s student learning support, a programmatic center of excellence here at Finlandia. We have also dedicated this issue’s cover and special feature to former Finlandia University president, Dr. Robert Ubbelohde (1942-2018). Bob’s imprint is everywhere on Finlandia’s campus today. The Finlandia community is deeply grateful for his faithful, visionary leadership. We also wish to introduce new leadership in this issue. In 2018, Finlandia elected five new Board of Trustee members: Stephen Nikander resides in Santa Clarita, California. Steve, a chartered financial analyst (CFA), brings to Finlandia’s board a wealth of experience and executive leadership in investment management. Steve’s great grandfather, Rev. Juho Kustaa Nikander served as Finlandia’s first president from 1896 to 1919. See this year’s spring issue of the Bridge for more on Steve. Steve serves on the committee for administration and finance. John Niska divides his time between Providence, Rhode Island and Ontonagon, Michigan. He describes how his Finnish grandparents “instilled in their children and grandchildren the value of education, the importance of hard work and pride in their heritage.” John spent his entire professional career in K-12 and higher education. John serves on the committee for academics and assessment. There is a feature on him and the new position he’s taken with the Finnish Council in America on page 14.
