These shows were originally released over seven consecutive days But are now gathered together in this omniBus edition. Simtek Grand Prix You’re listening to Sidepodcast, and this is the latest mini‐series: Forgotten F1 Teams. I think it’s proBaBly self explanatory But this is a series dedicated to profiling some of the forgotten teams. Forget aBout your Ferrari’s and your McLaren’s, what aBout those who didn’t make such an impact on the sport, But still have a story to tell? Those are the ones you’ll hear today. Thanks should go to Scott Woodwiss for suggesting the topic, and the teams, and we’ll dive right in with Simtek Grand Prix. Simtek Grand Prix was Born from Simtek Research Ltd, the name standing for Simulation Technology. The company founders were Nick Wirth and Max Mosley, Both of whom had serious pedigree within motorsport. Mosley had Been a team owner Before with March, and Wirth was a mechanical engineering student who was snapped up By March as an aerodynamicist, working underneath Adrian Newey. When March was sold to Leyton House, Mosley and Wirth? Both decided to leave, and joined forces to create Simtek. Originally, the company had a single office in Wirth’s house, But it was soon oBvious they needed a Bigger, more wind‐tunnel shaped Base, which they Built in Oxfordshire. Mosley had the connections that meant racing teams from all over the gloBe were interested in using their research technologies, But while keeping the clients satisfied, Simtek Began designing an F1 car for BMW in secret. -

News Release Formula 1 Champion Puts Formula Student into Pole Position David Coulthard gets in the driving seat at FS10 at Silverstone Thursday 15 July Europe‟s biggest student motorsport competition launched with a bang with racing legend David Coulthard dropping in for a flying visit at the Silverstone-based event. He was taken on a tour of the garages at Formula Student, now in its 13th year and run by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE). He agreed to come on a whistle-stop tour to see the new wave of engineering talent on display and then took part in a Q&A session where he was joined by Andrew Shovlin, Senior Race Engineer at MERCEDES GP PETRONAS, Bob Bell, Managing Director of Renault F1 Team and Nick Wirth, Technical Director of Virgin Racing. David, who has taken no less than 13 grand prix wins in his F1 career, said: “This is the first time I have visited Formula Student and the level of engineering talent here is amazing.” He visited, amongst others, University of Hertfordshire‟s electric car and one designed by Germany‟s, Karlsruhe Institute of Technology. FS is an educational motorsport event which challenges engineering students to design and build a single-seater racing car from scratch. This is the biggest event in its history with circa 3,000 students from nearly 30 countries. There are about 100 cars on display running on anything from petrol, E85, electric and hybrid. Jon Hilton, Chairman of IMechE Formula Student, added: "This is truly the most international year we have had at Formula Student. -

EDITOR-IN-CHIEF The year 2012 is upon us. Irrespective of what doomsday cultists may say about the Mohammad Al Taie outcome of this year, for the automotive industry we think 2012 will be a signature year – of course with a few provisos in place. 2011 in itself was both a year of opportunity and impediments. F1 Digest 2010 – Malaysia Preview Hello and Welcome Back to F1 Digest
F1 Digest 2010 – Malaysia Preview Hello and welcome back to F1 Digest. It seems like only a few days ago since I was here reliving the Australian GP with you. Ah, it was only a few days. Back to back racing means we are ready to preview the Malaysian GP. Let’s get started. Vital Statistics The Malaysian Grand Prix takes place on the 4th April at the Sepang International Circuit. The track is a permanent facility, of 5.54 kilometres which will mean 56 laps. The record is with Juan Pablo Montoya who posted a 1:34.223 in 2004. Pole position in 2009 was Jenson Button with a 1:35.181. The previous three winners of the race have been Button, Raikkonen and Alonso. The long range weather forecasts suggest rain, rain, rain with temperatures around 32 degrees. The race will be starting later in the day, similar to last year, which could quite conceivably cause a repeat of the problems. But more of that in a moment. What You Guys Think Just a couple of thoughts on the Malaysian circuit, KerbRider says: “a decent track, a lot of fun to drive around and more technically demanding than most of Hermans other hermits.” Whilst Lukeh says: “I quite like Malaysia myself. When it's not in the middle of a flood and unsure if it's day or night time, of course.” If you want to send me your thoughts on any or all of the circuits left on the calendar, please email me christine at sidepodcast dot com and you could hear your words in this very section. -
