FOOTBALL: BUILDERS HAND KANSAS WESLEYAN FIRST KCAC LOSS SINCE 2017, IMPROVE TO 3-0

SALINA, Kan The Southwestern College football team picked up a monumental win on Saturday afternoon, defeating the 42-21 to end their 25-game KCAC winning streak and hand them their fi rst conference loss since October 2017.

Both teams entered Saturday’s contest top two in the conference in defense and also held two of the top three spots in the KCAC offensively. It was the defense that came to play from both sides in the fi rst half, seeing just a combined 21 points between the two. The Builders got on the board fi rst halfway through the fi rst quarter, using a two-yard run from Keyshawn Wyatt (SR/Dallas, Texas) to jump out to a 7-0 lead. Wyatt ended the game with a career-best performance against the Coyotes, tallying 150 yards on the ground to go with his one touchdown. The Builders led 7-0 after 15 minutes of play.

The third quarter saw a major scoring outburst all together, but it was the Builders that were able to make the most noise. On the team’s opening drive of the second half, Cagle closed out their possession with a 12-yard keeper into the end zone to give them the two-score advantage at the moment. After a defensive stop, the Builders again capitalized, using double-digit plays to eat some clock and add to their lead. Jaquils Coleman (JR/Mansfi eld, Texas) capped off the 52-yard drive with a three-yard touchdown run to put Southwestern up 28-7.

Almost immediately after the Coleman score, the Coyotes responded with a 57-yard touchdown run to pull closer, running off just 19 total seconds on the game clock between scores. With momentum facing a possible shift and the Moundbuilders facing a 3rd and 13 on their next possession, Cagle kept the Southwestern drive going with a 15-yard run to give them a fi rst down. On the very next play, Cagle sent the ball near the sideline to Keyshawn Jones (JR/Dayton, Ohio) on a screen, letting him do the rest and eventually going the distance to make it 4/4 on touchdown drives to begin the third quarter. Kansas Wesleyan was able to tally another touchdown before the fi eld fl ipped, presenting a 35-21 margin in favor of the Builders entering the fi nal frame. K. Jones was the top receiver on the day for the Builders, hauling in seven catches for 104 yards to go with his touchdown in the third.

The fourth quarter slowed down a bit and the Moundbuilders defense again stepped up big, preventing the Coyotes from scoring a point to close out the game. Southwestern added one more score fi ve minutes in on another Cagle to Hoffman hookup in the end zone to make it 42-21, which proved to be the fi nal score. On the other side of the ball, Kansas Wesleyan saw just three possessions in the fourth quarter, resulting in a turnover on downs, interception, and fumble. Grant Torgerson (SR/Cumming, Ga.) led the way with seven tackles, four of which were solo, to go with his one tackle for loss and a sack.

Cagle ended his afternoon for the Builders with 247 yards through the air on 17-23 passing. He also added 77 yards on the ground and accounted for four total touchdowns. Spensirr Howard (SO/Tulsa, Okla.) was also big in the passing game, grabbing four catches for 58 yards, while two of Hoff man’s three receptions for 33 yards went for touch- downs.

With the win, Southwestern improves to 3-0 on the overall and KCAC play. The victory over Kansas Wesleyan is the team’s fi rst over the Coyotes since 2013. The Builders will be back in action on Saturday, October 24th at home when they host the Saint Mary Spires.
