FOOTBALL: BUILDERS IMPROVE TO 4-0 FOLLOWING WIN OVER SAINT MARY

WINFIELD, Kan The Southwestern College football team made it four straight wins to start the 2020 season on Saturday, defeating the by a score of 59-3 from inside Jantz Stadium.

It was all Builders in this one from the start, scoring on their opening drive of the contest on a fourth-down conversion deep in the red zone. Brad Cagle (SR/San Diego, Calif.) got things going with a two-yard strike to Keyshawn Jones (JR/Dayton, Ohio) to put the Builders up 7-0. After a defensive stop by Southwestern, the Builders converted on their second and only other possession of the fi rst quarter, again on a Cagle passing touchdown. This time it was the long ball, hooking up with Andre Jones (JR/Austin, Texas) for a 54-yard completion. The Moundbuilders led 14-0 after one quarter of play.

The second quarter is where things broke open for the home team. On their fi rst possession of the second quarter, it was Cagle and A. Jones who made it 3/3 on touchdown drives to begin the day, using a seven-yard score to put the Builders up 21-0. Following an interception from Delaun LeFlore (JR/Pensacola, Fla.) to give the Builders back the ball, Keyshawn Wyatt (SR/Dallas, Texas) made it 28-0 on a four-yard touchdown scamper.

Over the course of the next few possessions for the Spires, it was the Builders defense that helped put points on the scoreboard. Facing a fi rst down from their own 11, the Spires saw some trouble on the shotgun snap, leading to a Darren Hicks (JR/Haughton, La.) sack and forced fumble with the ball rolling back to the Saint Mary end zone. After a scramble for the ball, Israel Harper (SR/Mesquite, Texas) came out with it-- giving Southwestern its fi rst defensive score of the season, making it 35-0 at the time. On the ensuing kickoff , a muff ed catch from the Spires resulted in another fumble recovery. Two plays later, Cagle connected with Zavyar Swain (SR/Mesquite, Texas) from 32 yards out to make it 42-0. The Builders added another passing touchdown from Cagle and a fi eld goal from Freddy Botello (JR/Dallas, Texas) to push it to 52-0 at halftime. Cagle’s day was done after two quarters of play as the reigning NAIA Player of the Week fi nished his afternoon 11-13 through the air with 321 yards and fi ve passing touchdowns.

The second half slowed down a bit, with both teams running the ball a majority of their plays. The lone touchdown of the second half came late in the third quarter as Neal Gugelmeyer (FR/Kiowa, Kan.) ran it in for his fi rst career touchdown. The Spires added a fi eld goal later on to break the shutout, resulting in the fi nal score of 59-3.

As a team, Southwestern outgained Saint Mary 520-127 on off ense. Wyatt led the rushing attack for the Builders, tallying 144 yards on the ground. Through the air, K. Jones hauled in six catches for 179 yards, while A. Jones had three receptions for 109. Both had two touchdowns apiece.

On defense, Marcus Richard (SR/Pearland, Texas) led a balanced eff ort with a team-high six tackles. LeFlore had two interceptions for the Builders, while Landon Davis (SO/ Winfi eld, Kan.) also snagged one in the second half. Hicks added two sacks and had two forced fumbles.

With the win, Southwestern improves to 4-0 on the season. The 4-0 start is the best start ever under coach Brad Griffi n and they sit as one of two teams in the KCAC with an undefeated mark. The team will remain home for their next game on Saturday, October 31st when they host the . Kickoff is scheduled for 1:30 pm from inside Jantz Stadium.
