WOMEN’S BASKETBALL TRIPPED UP AT SAINT MARY

LEAVENWORTH, Kan. - The Southwestern College women’s basketball team dropped a close contest on the road on Thursday, falling to the by a score of 53-47.

Despite committing eight turnovers in the first quarter, the Lady Builders held a slight 10-8 lead after ten minutes of play thanks to a defense that allowed Saint Mary to hit just 4-20 shots. Southwestern posted a 4-10 mark from the floor in the opening quarter, but one additional three-pointer and made free-throw gave them the two-point margin.

Both offenses woke up in the second quarter, each posting their highest-scoring frame of the evening. Southwestern held a lead for the majority of the period, growing a margin as large as six and stretching it to five on other occasions, but Saint Mary closed the half strong hitting five free-throws in the final 30 seconds to take a 30-28 advantage heading into intermission. Both teams connected on six made shots in the second quarter.

The third quarter saw the Spires’ lead grow to as many as eight points several different times as that was the margin the home team took heading into the final ten minutes of action. The Lady Builders hit just 2-11 shots in the third and were 1-8 from behind-the-arc.

Saint Mary stretched their lead up to 11 points three minutes into the fourth quarter and held a lead of at least eight points until the halfway point at five minutes remaining. A bucket by the Lady Builders with 4:46 left to play brought the deficit to 52-47. Neither team saw a shot go in the rest of the way, with the only point scored coming on a made free throw by the Spires with seven seconds showing on the clock. The two teams combined for 0-11 from the floor in the final five minutes.

As a team, Southwestern shot 37 percent on the night compared to Saint Mary’s 27 percent mark. Both teams were close in threes and free-throws as Lady Builders connected on one additional deep shot, while the Spires held a plus-three margin from the charity stripe. The eye-popping difference came in the turnover category, where Southwestern committed 21 to just nine from their counterpart. Amanda Graddy (FR/Lexington, Okla.) and Ashley Carrillo (SR/Wichita, Kan.) were the top scorers for Southwestern, each finishing with nine points apiece.

With the loss, the Lady Builders drop to 2-16 on the year and 2-14 in the KCAC. The team returns home for their next contest on Saturday, February 6th when they host the . Tip is scheduled for 3:00 pm inside Stewart Field House.
