The Condors have seen two players leave a road game early this season to be present for the birth of their children. C Rylan Kaip fl ew back from Utah early in the year, and F Andrew Ianiero left from Ontario just a few weeks ago. Several players on the team have kids, and for all of them the experienced has changed their lives. D Joey Ryan felt more motivated when he had a daughter. “I felt like I had to play harder because I have a child to support now. I just need to play the best that I can play,” he said. Despite that, he doesn’t fi nd it any more diffi cult to focus on the game. “I still play how I can play and it doesn’t bother me and I think I like to play better because she is in the stands watching me. It gives me something to play for.” RW Pascal Morency mentioned that fatherhood helps him take a step back from hockey. “I think the best part of it is when you have a good game or a bad game or you are going through tough times, when you come home it just brings a smile to your face,” said Morency. “You’re always happy to come home and see the big smile.” Initially, Morency said that it can be a little bit tough to think about hockey. “It’s a new life, a new adjustment. Sometimes you’re at the rink and you think about it, but as he got older I knew he would be fi ne, and knew he was in good hands. My wife takes good care of him, so you get the hang of it.” Adam Naglich became a father over the summer, so he is experiencing his fi rst season as a player with a baby. “The biggest difference is that on those days off, when you don’t have a child you have time to go golfi ng and do other things with the boys,” he commented. “Now, it’s obviously family fi rst, so when you’re at home you want to spend time with the family. There is still plenty of time when we’re on the road to spend with the guys, so it works out well.” Ianiero recently had twins, but it wasn’t his fi rst time as a father. “There is a little less sleep when you have twins,” he said about the difference between a single child and twins. “It seems like they are feeding more, there’s more diapers to change, they sleep for 16 hours a day but it doesn’t seem like that when you’re taking care of two, that’s for sure.” Even though he has been through it before, this time around things are a bit different. “It’s defi nitely not easier. I think I’ve forgot- ten everything I knew from the fi rst time, but it’s coming back to me quicker.” “I had my little guy when I was still in college,” said F Jean-Marc Beaudoin. “But it was re- ally neat because the entire Quinnipiac community was 100 percent behind us and they were as excited as we were,” he said. It’s a unique situation being a young family in a strange, temporary home, but they all make it work. “It was cool, because even though our family was in Alberta it was like we had a second family in ,” said Beaudoin. “It’s no different here in Bakersfi eld, as the staff, the boosters, and the community have really embraced us.”
