3 THE AMAZING WHAT IS A ZAMBONI?

In 1949, Frank J. Zamboni developed a machine that is used to clean snow off of an ice surface. This device, known as a Zamboni, produces a clean, smooth sheet of ice for hockey players and skaters to perform on.

HOW DOES A ZAMBONI WORK?

After the ice has been skated on, a blade on the back of the Zamboni shaves a thin layer of ice off the top of the surface. Then, a corkscrew conveyor above that blade collects the shavings and takes them to a large bin called the snow tank. While the happens, jets of water spray into the cracks and ruts, and a vacuum gently sucks up the dirt that has been dislodged from the ice. For the final touch, warm water is gently sprayed onto the ice as a towel attached to a pipe skims across the ice making it as smooth as glass.

FACTS

• Zambonis travel ¾ mile per resurfacing of ice, completing four resurfacings per game.

• In 2001, a Zamboni was driven from St. Johns, Newfoundland to Victoria, British Columbia. It traveled at about 9 mph, and took almost 4 months!

• The blade on an ice resurfacer weighs 57 pounds, is ½ inch thick and is incredibly sharp.

• The ice shavings produced by one resurfacing could be used to make over 3,500 snow cones. How many snow cones could you make if you resurface the ice 3 times?

7 IN HOCKEY Two-dimensional and three-dimensional shapes are important because they’re all around us. These shapes can be found in food, nature, and even hockey!

1. What is the area of the goal in square feet? (Hint: A=LxW) 6 ft.

2. What is the area of the goal in square inches? (Hint: Convert the height and width to inches first. 1 foot=12 inches)

3. If a goalie faces 15 shots every period, how many shots does he face in a game? (Hint: 1 game=3 periods)

Hockey pucks have a unique shape that affect the way they move during a hockey game. What everyday objects are made from the shapes below? Write down some examples on the lines under the shape.

CUBE CUBOID CYLINDER SPHERE PYRAMID CONE

Pucks are flat, solid, and circular. Circle the kind of shape that you think it is.

How would the movement of a puck change if it was shaped differently?

8 STATISTICS A player’s shooting percentage is determined by dividing the number of goals scored by the number of shots taken.

PLAYER GOALS SCORED SHOTS ON GOAL SHOOTING PERCENTAGE

Everett Clark 11 88 12.5%

GOALIE SAVE To calculate a goalie’s save percentage, subtract their goals allowed from their shots against. Then, divide your answer by the PERCENTAGES shots against. Convert your answer to a fraction and percentage!

GOALIE SHOTS AGAINST GOALS ALLOWED SAVE PERCENTAGE

455-35 = 420 Ken Appleby 455 35 420/455 = 0.92 x 100 = 92%

Which goalie has the best chance of stopping a shot attempt on goal?

9 PROBLEMS 1. If the average hockey player skates about 5 miles per game, what is the total distance they will skate in a 72 game season?

2. Two hockey players race from one goal to the other. The first player took 6.15 seconds. It took the second player 8.38 seconds. How much faster did the first player reach the goal?

PENALTY KILL

A penalty kill occurs when an Icemen player has to leave the ice to serve a penalty. The team serving the penalty has fewer players on the ice, which means they are short-handed. The team with more players on the ice is on a power play, while the team serving the penalty is on a penalty kill. The goal of a penalty kill is to stop the other team from scoring an easier goal, because they have more players on the ice than their opponent.

The Icemen had 305 penalty kill opportunities in the 2018-2019 season, and completed a successful penalty kill 267 times. To EQUATION find their penalty kill percentage for the entire season, divide the number of penalty kills by the number of opportunities. Penalty Kill Then, multiply by 100. Show your work below. = x 100 = Penalty Kill Opportunites

ANSWER

10 HOCKEY

Use these to answer the questions below.

Over the course of a game, players can lose between five and eight pounds of body weight. This weight is mostly water, which is why a player drinks liquids on the bench to replenish his/her body.

The temperature of the ice during a game is 24° Fahrenheit (F) or -5° Celsius (C). Water has a freezing point of 32° F; 0° C.

Goalie mask are made out of Kevlar, the same material used in bulletproof vests for police officers.

New materials for hockey sticks include aluminum and carbon-graphite, which generally weigh less than wooden sticks. A player’s slap shot can reach speeds up to 108 mph!

1. What temperature is the ice during a hockey game?

2. How much weight can a player lose over the course of the game? What type of weight is it?

3. Up to what speed can a puck travel from a player’s shot?

4. Goalie mask are made up of what material?

11 FRICTION

FRICTION is a force objects have which makes them resist motion or movement across or against each other. Friction is what happens when two things rub against one another; like two hands rubbing together or air slowing down a car.

ENERGY is the capacity to do work! Energy is how things change and move. It's everywhere around us and takes all sorts of forms.

Players require a lot of energy to skate, shoot the puck, and win a hockey game. There are two types of energy: Kinetic & Potential

POTENTIAL KINETIC is stored energy. A car stopped at a red is created due to motion. When the light light has potential energy. turns green and the car begins to move, the car now has kinetic energy.

Label each picture with which type of energy is being used.

12 THERE’S NO“” IN Having a well rounded hockey team is a key to having a successful season. Teams are built with three different positions: forwards, defense, and goalies.

FORWARDS: Their main focus is to score the puck. DEFENSEMEN: Their job is to keep the other team from scoring by playing defense. GOALIES: They keep the puck out of the net.

Forwards and defensemen have special equipment and gear in order to do their jobs effectively. Goalies also wear special equipment, but it is much more advanced and provides more protection.
