The Elmira College Men‘s Hockey team has set high goals after a very successful 2010- 11 season, which culminated with an automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Tourna- ment. Finishing the season with a national ranking of 7, the 2010-11 Soaring Eagles closed out another successful season on the ice. The 2010-11 Soaring Eagles not only finished as the ECAC West Regular Season Champs, but also won their first ECAC West since the 2006 season. The Purple and Gold were eventually eliminated in the NCAA Division III Quarterfinals to host Adrian College, 5-3.

Led by third year coach Aaron Saul ‟98, EC culminated the 2010-11 campaign with a 17-7-4 overall record and an ECAC West best 8-3-1 conference record. The Purple and Gold come into the season ranked 6th according to the USCHO.com poll. Under the guidance of Saul, the Soaring Eagles look for their seventh straight winning season in the 2011-12 campaign. Elmira returns a number of successful players from a year ago, and looks to use their experience to improve on last year‘s slow start to the season. Captain Kevin Willer ‟12 (, ONT -- Rangers) earned First Team All-ECAC West honors during the 2010-11 season. The Toronto native provides of- fensive firepower as well as leadership for the Soaring Eagles. Last year he netted a team -high 17 goals in addition to 18 assists for 35 total points. Assistant Captain Martin Martin Lee ‟12 Lee ‟12 (Toronto, ONT -- ) was named ECAC West Defensive Player 2010-11 ECAC of the Year in addition to being named First Team All-ECAC West. Lee finished the season with 17 points on three goals and 14 assists, leading Elmira‘s defense to being Defensive Player of the Year the top scoring defense in the highly competitive ECAC West.

Also providing leadership for EC this season will be Assistant Captains Brendan Sanders ‟12 (Mississauga, ONT -- Vaughan Vipers) and Michael Kirby ‟12 (Delta, BC -- Melford Mustangs). Sanders will provide a significant contribution on the offensive side of the puck. In 2010-11 he totaled 21 points on 17 assists and four goals, finishing the season with the team‘s third highest point total. Kirby is an enforcer on the defensive side of the puck and looks to help Elmira solidify its protection in front of net.

Elmira has one of the finest in the nation in third year player and First Team All-ECAC honoree Darren MacDonald ‟13 (Stittsville, ONT -- ). MacDonald finished the season with an impressive 16-3-4 overall record last season, which are the most wins an EC goalie has had since the 2007-08 season. The net-minder ranked in the top 10 on the national level in four major goalie statistical categories. He finished the season ranked 3rd in save percentage (.930), 5th in shutouts (3), 7th in win percentage (.783), and 9th in GAA (2.16). MacDonald‟s efforts in net place him amongst EC greats. His save percentage is the best percentage in EC history, his three shutouts is tied for second most in a single season, and his GAA ranks third on EC‘s All- Time single season list. For his efforts between the pipes he was named to the AHCA Division III All-American Second Team. Mac- Donald brings back invaluable experience from postseason play last year and provides consistent production between the pipes that is sure to help EC contend for another ECAC-West title. Also returning to spark the Soaring Eagle offense is fourth year player Dar- cy Vaillancourt ‟12 (Mississauga, ONT -- Vaughan Vipers). Vaillancourt was named a member of the Second Team All-ECAC West for his play on the offensive side last year, as he totaled 33 points on the year, netting 14 goals and dishing a team-high 19 assists. Elmira‘s last returning member of the All-ECAC West team is Jesper Strale ‟14 (Uppsala, -- Springfield Pic's) who was named to the All-Rookie West team. Strale ranked second in the ECAC West in rookie scoring with .91 points per game in confer- ence games alone and came on strong for the Soaring Eagles late in the season, tallying points in Elmira‘s last seven contests.

The trio of Rick Acorn ‟12 (Barrie, ONT -- ), John Clewlow ‟12 (Brampton, ONT -- Dixie Bee Hives) and Colin Hoey ‟13 (Doylestown, PA -- New Huskies) will look to have a larger impact this season with another year of experi- ence under their belts. The group adds firepower to the EC offense, as they combined for 44 points last season. Acorn and Clewlow each netted six goals, while Hoey tallied five, and all three players dished out nine assists apiece. Meanwhile second year players Dyl- an Herold ‟14 (Delta, BC -- Burnaby Express) and Wes Consorti ‟14 (Brantford, ONT -- ) came on strong in their inaugural season with the Purple and Gold. The duo combined for 19 points on nine goals and 10 assists. The 2011-12 squad welcomes a talented group of newcomers including six members of the Glorious Class of 2015 and one transfer. Ryan deMelo ‟15 (Brampton, ONT -- ), Pascal Maeder ‟15 (Binningen, -- Basel Sharks), Eric Da- vid ‟15 (Dorval, QUE -- ), Josh Burnell ‟15 (Mississauga, ONT -- ), Andrew Ciam- pichini ‟15 (Innisfil, ONT -- Vaughan Vipers), Jay Kenney ‟15 (Somerville, MA -- Drumheller Dragons) and ‟Arcy Oakes ‟13 (Shanty Bay, ONT -- Quinnipiac University) will look to add depth and team chemistry to the already talented roster. With the right combination of youth, experience, and talent, the Soaring Eagles will look to make this season as exciting as the last and con- tend for the conference and national titles.

Finishing the season with a national ranking of 7, the 2010-11 Soaring Eagles closed out another successful season on the ice. This year‘s Soaring Eagles not only finished as the ECAC West Regular Season Champs, but also won their first ECAC West Playoffs since the 2006 season. Led by second year coach Aaron Saul ‘98, the Purple and Gold culminated a 17-7-4 overall record with an ECAC West best 8-3-1 conference record.

Elmira would get off to a shaky start to the season as they would own a 4-5-2 overall record as of November 28th. A resilient Elmira squad would then go on to win 11 of their next 12 with six of the nine teams played held national rankings. EC would then go on to win two straight games in the ECAC West playoffs in dominant fashion, all but sealing them a spot in the NCAA Division III Ice Hockey Tournament. In the NCAAs, Elmira fell in the Quarterfinals to host institution Adrian College, 5-3.

With the season coming to a close, several EC skaters were honored with end of the year awards. Marty Lee ‟12 (Toronto, ONT -- Vaughan Vipers, OPJHL) was named ECAC West Defensive Player of the Year in addition to being named First Team All-ECAC West. Lee finished the season with 17 points on 3 goals and 14 assists, leading Elmira‘s defense to being the top scoring defense in the highly competitive ECAC West. 30 2011-12 Elmira College Men‟s Ice Hockey Murray Athletics Center

A Closer Look at the Murray Athletics Center

The Murray Athletics Center, or the Domes, is the home of the Soaring Eagles Hockey program and has been for the past 32 years. In the summer of 2001 a major renovation pro- ject took place that included new locker rooms and new offices for the hockey program, four new multi-purpose locker rooms and a new sports medicine area. These en- hancements to the facility provide the Soaring Eagles with a state-of-the-art locker room which includes individual maple player stalls, a stick room with work bench area, stereo and entertainment center, video editing equipment, coaches offices and meeting area, intercom system, and dehumidification system. The Murray Athletic Center has been one of the premiere Division III hockey facilities in the country and these improvements demonstrate the College's commit- ment to provide the student-athletes with the necessary facilities to support the athletics programs at the College. The Soaring Eagles continue to have one of the highest home attendance averages in the country with fre- quent sell-out crowds. A truly unique facility that the Soaring Eagles are happy to call home, and a place where few opponents enjoy much success.
