A strange twist of fate, to be sure. At the beginning of the season, the rookie center out of Niagara University was penciled in as one of eight players assigned to the Condors from the Anaheim Ducks AHL af- fi liate, the Iowa Chops. And it didn’t take long for fans to notice Matt. In fact, he was one of two rookie ‘Matts’ in the Bakersfi eld lineup that quickly made a name for themselves, as both he and Matt Pope were off to a fast start lighting it up in their pro careers. They are both in the AHL for now, and Pope missed his giveaway night last weekend, as well, with Youth Replica Jersey Night. Before turning pro, Caruana was a steady player at Niagara, putting up double digits in goals in three of his four seasons. He fi nished in the Top 5 in points in his conference as a sophomore, junior and senior. Signed by the Ducks to an American Hockey League contract last season, after fi nishing up his college career, Caruana suited up in fi ve regular season games with their AHL affi liate, then the Portland Pirates. There he played for Head Coach Kevin Dineen, who sniped over 300 goals and racked up over 2,200 penalty minutes in his NHL career before getting behind the behind the bench. Caruana also saw action in 13 Calder Cup Playoff games, as well. He was sent to Bakersfi eld last October to start his fi rst full professional campaign, but the last game he played for the Condors was back on November 29th against the Idaho Steelheads. By that point, he had 10 goals and 14 points in 18 ECHL games, ranked among rookie leaders in the league in scoring, and tied for fourth among all ECHL rookies in goals. He had three multi-goal games in his Condors career, and scored at least one goal in four of his fi rst fi ve games of the season. On December 1st, he was called up by Iowa and we haven’t seen him since. He has played 39 games with the Chops, putting up 5g-6a-11pts in the AHL. “It’s a little weird looking at yourself on a bobblehead,” said Matt, on the phone from Iowa. “It’s funny. I’m seeing the picture all over the website and looking at in press releases and it’s kind of strange. The hair looks a little reddish, but overall I think they did a good job.” Matt did a good job, too, while he was here. “I’ve said it before, that I had a great time when I was there in Bakersfi eld. I wish I could be there for my bobblehead night, but at the same time things have gone pretty good for me this season, and we have a battle up here for the playoffs, too. But it’s defi nitely a pretty cool honor to be made into a bobblehead.” CONDORS STATS as of 03.09.09 Name GP G A PTS +/- PIM PPG SHG Pt/G PIMPG 15 Dave Bonk C 52 25 45 70 -8 55 11 0 1.35 1.06 19 Mark Derlago LW 41 27 38 65 4 28 11 0 1.59 0.68 27 Chad Painchaud RW 57 20 44 64 -7 46 4 2 1.12 0.81 * 10 Matt Pope F 54 30 33 63 -4 72 13 3 1.17 1.33 32 Mike Wirll (total) RW 49 21 30 51 -14 38 5 2 1.04 0.78 9 Andrew Ianiero F 64 20 28 48 -9 46 6 1 0.75 0.72 11 Bruce Graham (total) C 64 20 21 41 -15 55 8 0 0.64 0.86 20 Danny LaPointe (total) C 59 13 17 30 3 63 4 3 0.51 1.07 12 Brett Pilkington (total) C 41 8 19 27 -14 8 2 0 0.66 0.2 23 Donny Grover (total) D 60 3 22 25 1 73 2 0 0.42 1.22 25 Ryan Mahrle (total) D 59 3 20 23 0 36 1 1 0.39 0.61 * 14 Tylor Michel F 56 7 14 21 -7 56 1 0 0.38 1 * 2 Chris Kaufman D 41 3 8 11 -2 26 1 0 0.27 0.63 22 Liam Huculak RW 43 4 5 9 -15 139 0 0 0.21 3.23 6 Jay Langager D 23 2 6 8 -4 18 2 0 0.35 0.78 * 8 Sean Hurley D 42 1 7 8 -14 28 0 0 0.19 0.67 7 Scott Balan D 52 0 7 7 -16 90 0 0 0.13 1.73 * 36 Tom Morrow D 60 0 6 6 -8 68 0 0 0.1 1.13 * 18 Jason Bailey RW 28 0 1 1 -9 34 0 0 0.04 1.21 44 Yutaka Fukufuji G 28 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 41 Dave McKee G 28 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 Name GP Mins GA Shutouts Avg. • Dobber's 2010-11 Fantasy Guide
DOBBER’S 2010-11 FANTASY GUIDE DOBBERHOCKEY.COM – HOME OF THE TOP 300 FANTASY PLAYERS I think we’re at the point in the fantasy hockey universe where DobberHockey.com is either known in a fantasy league, or the GM’s are sleeping. Besides my column in The Hockey News’ Ultimate Pool Guide, and my contributions to this year’s Score Forecaster (fifth year doing each), I put an ad in McKeen’s. That covers the big three hockey pool magazines and you should have at least one of them as part of your draft prep. The other thing you need, of course, is this Guide right here. It is not only updated throughout the summer, but I also make sure that the features/tidbits found in here are unique. I know what’s in the print mags and I have always tried to set this Guide apart from them. Once again, this is an automatic download – just pick it up in your downloads section. Look for one or two updates in August, then one or two updates between September 1st and 14th. After that, when training camp is in full swing, I will be updating every two or three days right into October. Make sure you download the latest prior to heading into your draft (and don’t ask me on one day if I’ll be updating the next day – I get so many of those that I am unable to answer them all, just download as late as you can). Any updates beyond this original release will be in bold blue.
