Where I have consulted the work of others, this is always clearly stated. 2 ABSTRACT This thesis is concerned with tourist representations and practices in India. Orientalist aesthetics have often associated this country with notions of spirituality and mysticism; tourist narratives sustain and reinforce such representations by describing India as a land of ancient rituals and timeless traditions. The visual construction of India’s ‘spiritual landscapes’ has been largely deployed as a powerful tool for subduing the unfamiliar Other within reassuring epistemological categories. However, tourism research has recently become interested in exploring the role of tourist practices in landscape production. Not only do tourists ‘gaze upon’ landscapes, they also script landscapes through practices and performances. By focusing on the case of Varanasi, the Indian pilgrimage city on the banks of the Ganges, this thesis shows how tourist practices (re)produce and make sense of the city’s ‘sacredscape’. Special attention is paid to the riverfront, which epitomizes the cultural and spiritual significance ascribed to the city. Both Hindu and tourist narratives depict the riverfront as embodying a special power, a unique meaning, whether this uniqueness is held to be a ‘spiritual’ or a ‘picturesque’ one. The thesis analyses the city’s riverfront as the place where tourist, ritual, and day-to-day activities are played out and negotiated, and where the aesthetics of landscape is confronted with the materialities and the practices inherent to this place. -

It is regarded to be the abode of Lord Shiva. Because of high altitude, rough terrain, harsh weather, pilgrims are prone to many illnesses Objective: To study the profile, pattern and outcome, among Shri Amarnath Ji yatri patients attending SKIMS in year 2017. Methodology: A prospective study was carried out during the yatra period, all pilgrims of Shri Amarnath ji Yatra who were referred to SKIMS from July-August 2017 were studied and the patients were followed from admission till discharge. The profile, pattern and outcome of illness in Yatris attendingResults: Yatra in the year 2017 was compared with the results of year 2011 and 2015. Out of 97 patients received at SKIMS, 54(55.67%) were having minor ailments and were seen on OPD basis, 43(44.32%) were admitted. 32(74.41%) admitted were males at the time of arrival 14(32.5%) were Road traffic Accidents followed by 7 patients (16.27%) who were Acute Myocardial Infarction. -

The attention to the development of tourist facilities was given from the 3 Plan Period onwards, Early in 1950 the executive part of tourism organization came into being with the appointment of a Tourist Development Officer. He was assisted by some of the existing staff of Home (Transport) Department. In 1960-61 the Assistant Secretary of the Home (Transport) Department was made Director of Tourism ex-officio and a few posts of assistants were created. Subsequently, the Secretary of Home (Transport) Department became the ex-officio Director of Tourism. Two Regional Tourist Offices - one for the five North Bengal districts i.e., Darjeeling, Jalpaiguri, Cooch Behar, West Dinajpur and Maida with headquarters at Darjeeling and the other for the remaining districts of the State with headquarters at Kolkata were also set up. The Regional Office at KolKata started functioning on 2nd September, 1961. The Regional Office in Darjeeling was started on 1st May, 1962 by taking over the existing Tourist Bureau of the Govt. of India at Darjeeling. The tourism wing of the Home (Transport) Department was transferred to the Development Department on 1st September, 1962. Development. Commissioner then became the ex-officio Director of Tourism. Subsequently, in view of the increasing activities of tourism organization it was transformed into a full-fledged Tourism Department, though the Secretary of the Forest Department functioned as the Secretary, Tourism Department. -

Budha-deva (Mercury Planet) When Chandradeva (the Moon) came of age, he conquered he three worlds and several times performed the Rajasuya sacrifice, which gives Lordship. Nine goddesses served him as well as many other deities. Then, having achieved rare glory, he became inordinately arrogant and overstepped the boundaries of propriety. Chandradeva was the chief disciple of Jupiter (Brihaspatideva), the guru of the celestials and was also the favourite of Tara (The Star), Jupiter's wife, who was attracted to him by his character, nature and beauty. Once it so happened - when Jupiter was away on an errand for the Devas, Tara and Chandradeva eloped. When Jupiter returned home, he found out that his wife was gone, and discovered her whereabouts, and several times sent messages to the Moon requesting his wife©s return. Chandradeva, however, repeatedly refused to comply with these requests, maintaining that Tara had accompanied him on her own accord and would leave only when she was satiated with him. These replies so infuriated Jupiter that he communicated with them to his disciple Lord Indra deva, who sent an ultimatum to the Moon. When the Moon refused to yield, Indra deva then commenced a war. Venus and the asuras (demons) took the side of the Moon in this war, because of the ongoing enmity between Jupiter and Venus, while Lord Shiva took the side of the devas for his love and respect for his preceptor Angiras Maha Rishi, the Rishi who was Jupiter©s father. As the battle was due to the desire (kama) for Tara, it was known as Tara-kaamayam. -

These Sivalingas are formed out of one single Sivalinga. As per the legend, this five Sivalingas were one which was owned by the Rakshasa King Tarakasura. None could win over him due to the power of this Sivalinga. In a war between deities and Tarakasura, Kumara Swamy and Tarakasura were face to face. Kumara Swamy used his Sakthi aayudha to kíll Taraka. By the power of Sakti aayudha the body of Taraka was torn into pieces. But to the astonishment of Lord Kumara Swamy all the pieces reunited to give rise to Taraka. Kumara Swamy repeatedly broke the body into pieces and it was re-unified again and again. This confused Lord Kumara Swamy and was in an embarrassed state then Lord Sriman-Narayana appeared before him and said “Kumara! Don’t get depressed, without breaking the Shiva lingham worn by the asura you can’t kíll him” you should first break the Shiva lingam into pieces, then only you can kíll Taraka Lord Vishnu also said that after breaking, the shiva lingha it will try to unite. To prevent the Linga from uniting, all the pieces should be fixed in the place where they are fallen by worshiping them and erecting temples on them. By taking the word of Lord Vishnu, Lord Kumara Swamy used his Aagneasthra (weapon of fire) to break the Shiva lingha worn by Taraka, Once the Shiva lingha broke into five pieces and was trying to unite by making Omkara nada (Chanting Om). -

Cierpial: Interpreting Sati: The Complex Relationship Between Gender and P INTERPRETING SATI: THE COMPLEX RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN GENDER AND POWER IN INDIA Interpreting Sati: The Complex Relationship Between Gender and Power In India Cheyanne Cierpial A recurring theme encountered in Hinduism is the significance of context sensitivity. In order to understand the religion, one must thoroughly examine and interpret the context surrounding a topic in Hinduism.1 Context sensitivity is nec- essary in understanding the role of gender and power in Indian society, as an exploration of patriarchal values, religious freedoms, and the daily ideologies as- sociated with both intertwine to create a complicated and elaborate relationship. The act of sati, or widow burning, is a place of intersection between these values and therefore requires in-depth scholarly consideration to come to a more fully adequate understanding. The controversy surrounding sati among religion schol- ars and feminist theorists reflects the difficulties in understanding the elaborate relationship between power and gender as well as the importance of context sen- sitivity in the study of women and gender in Hinduism. -

A Reflection on the Challenges for Hindu Women in the Twenty-first Century1 Neelima Shukla-Bhatt Introduction T the turn of the 21st century, it is clear that religion is not an insti- Atution of the past; it continues to be a powerful force in societies across the world. For this reason, some purely secularist and sociologi- cal theories of religion of the early twentieth century, which led to a wide spread view that religion was on the decline in the modern times, have proved to be limited, even though they are helpful in examining the social aspects of religious life.2 As Brian Hatcher suggests in a recent article, a major shortcoming of the secularist approaches to religion has been a purely dichotomous view of faith vs reason and tradition vs modernity. Instead of the demise of religion, Hatcher finds transforma- tion of religion with changing times, as proposed by sociologist Damiele Hervieu-Leger a more helpful way to understand religious phenomena (Hatcher 2006: 54–55). An aspect of religion that is widely debated with regard to need for transformation is treatment of women. In most organized religions of the world, women have not enjoyed equal rights with men. The norms assigned to them by male religious authorities have subjected them to various forms of marginalization. A major challenge for religious communities across the world today is to ensure that their religious practices and values are compatible with the ideal of gender equality as an aspect of the ideology of social justice, which is being widely upheld across the globe. -

In Rage geriet sie, als sie feststellen musste, dass für Shiva auch kein Anteil des Opfers vorgesehen war, während andere Götter reich bedacht wurden. Als Daksha Sati bemerkte erklärte er ihr, warum er Shiva nicht eingeladen hatte: ‚Er ist die Verkörperung des Übels, der Herr der Geister, Kobolde und niederen Kräfte.’ Diese Demütigung ihres Gatten vor versammelter Gesellschaft erzürnte Sati dermaßen, dass sie sich entschloss ihrem Leben ein Ende zu setzen, sie sprang in das Opferfeuer. Alle waren starr vor Entsetzen. Als Shiva davon erfuhr schnitt Er sich ein paar Haare ab und schlug damit gegen einen Berg, ein Donnerschlag erschallte und Virabhadra manifestierte sich im Bruchteil einer Sekunde. Shiva befahl Virabhadra, den Tod Satis zu rächen. Mit einer gewaltigen Armee von Sturmgöttern macht er sich auf den Weg zu Dakshas Opferplatz und griff die versammelten Teilnehmer an. -

The religion was actually established to unite the society and to guide the people to follow a particular series of morals and ideals. Today people have misunderstood Hinduism with „Brahmanical religion‟. Hinduism or Sanatana Dharma prescribes to live a simple dignified life for the service of humanity and nature. It has no definite set of rules. In the later Vedic age, the Varna system became more complex. The Brahmans created many complex set of rituals to be followed to be called a Hindu. They prescribed to follow different ways to get rid of sin and gain virtue. The Sanatana Dharma or Hinduism gradually was dominated by Brahmanical religion. -
