No other October 2018 A January 2019 fifteenth-century Italian artist responded in such a direct manner to the un- challenged Flemish masters of Bruges and Brussels, the legends of French painting, and greats in Italy like Piero della Francesca and Mantegna. Antonello da Messina’s genius lies in his ability to join this vision with Italian forms and a new notion of space: perspective. This style can be found in his early works, like the Crucifixion (Bucharest), the Salvator Mundi (London, 1465), the Madonna with Child (London) and Saint Jerome in His Study (Lon- don). In so doing, he created unique images with a harmonious and geometri- cal clarity, yet included exquisite descriptive passages. Antonello da Messina is also universally recognised as a formidable portraitist. • Antonello da Messina was the painter who probably introduced oil painting and Flemish pictorial techniques into mid-fifteenth-century Venetian art. • An exceptional publication, which joins the body of painting by one of Western art history’s most important masters. • Antonello da Messina (ca. 1430–1479) was one of the most groundbreaking and influential painters of the Quattrocento. Giovanni C.F. Villa is professor of Modern Art History and Museology and Art Criticism at the University of Bergamo. A scholar of painting from Veneto in the Renaissance, he also teaches Diagnostic Techniques for Cultural Herit- age at the Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore in Milan. 8 Hiroshige Visions of Japan edited by Rossella Menegazzo Specifications size 11 x 91/2 in. Hiroshige made landscape and nature the focus of his work by instilling in the viewer a sense of harmony, serenity and peace that, still today, is universally admired. In fact, he is considered the “master of rain and snow”. Hiroshige renders the human figure with quick, direct lines that at times call to mind manga and anime sketches, though simplified and essential. Published for the Roman exhibition, this volume presents a selection of over 200 works including polychrome wood engravings, brush-painted scrolls and preparatory sketches in ink. Among the celebrated series of prints we find the very modern One Hundred Views of Famous Places in Edo and the first entire series of Fifty-three Postal Stations of To¯kaido¯. Along with depictions of ani- mals, flowers and insects this book offers a comprehensive view of the artist’s technical qualities and constant research. • An in-depth view of the life and work of Utagawa Hiroshige whose depic- tions inspired Vincent van Gogh, Claude Monet, Paul Cézanne. • After Hokusai and Kuniyoshi, another leading protagonist of Japanese art. • For all Japanese art lovers. Rossella Menegazzo teaches History of East-Asian Art at the Università degli Studi di Milano. She published with Skira Hokusai, Hiroshige, Utamaro (2016), Domon Ken. The Master of Japanese Realism (2016), Hokusai. The Master’s Legacy (2017) and Kuniyoshi. Visionary of the Floating World (2017). 10 Ver Sacrum. The Vienna Secession Art Magazine 1898 –1903. The goal of Ver Sacrum was to give life to total works of art, the so-called Gesamtkunstwerk. That’s why each issue had to be a work of art, a perfect representation of Secession ideals, extraordinarily epitomized by the covers. Ver Sacrum, which alludes to the Sacred Spring of ancient Latin people and their renewal rituals, was an absolutely original magazine that elaborated new forms of design, illustration and print/edito- rial composition. During its six years of activity, 471 original drawings were specifically made for the magazine, along with 55 lithographs and copper en- gravings and 216 block prints. Conceived by Gustav Klimt, Max Kurzweil and Ludwig Hevesi, the illustrated magazine was founded in 1898 and periodically published until 1903. • 100 years after the death of Gustav Klimt, Egon Schiele, Otto Wagner and Koloman Moser. • Schiele, Kokoshka, Klimt, Moser, Otto Wagner, J.M. Olbrich, Hoffmann and other Secession masters are included. • An excursus on the Vienna Secession in painting, architecture, applied arts. Valerio Terraroli teaches Museum Studies and the History of Artistic Litera- ture and Art Criticism at the University of Verona; he has authored numerous essays and books on art and decorative art on the Vienna Secession, art nou- veau and art déco. 12 René Magritte Lifeline edited by Xavier Canonne and Julie Waseige Specifications size 83/4 x 11 in. The volume’s starting point is Magritte’s lecture at the Royal Helsinki, Amos Rex Musée des Beaux-Arts in Antwerp held on 20 November 1938, today known 7 February – 19 May 2019 as “La Ligne de vie” (Lifeline): it was through a series of examples that Mag- ritte outlined the genesis of his art, endeavoring to define thirteen years of Surrealist painting. Yet, he refused to explain his works. This conference was one of the rare occasions in which the artist opened up to the public, clarifying his beginnings and the evolution of his painting until 1938, the period now recognized as the most representative of his entire career. The book includes Magritte’s masterpieces before and after this date, when their diffusion and notoriety became international. It contains his most fa- mous paintings but also documents, book catalogs, musical scores and many photographs by Magritte himself and his fellow artists, along with screenshots of his films so as to give a broad overview on his entire artistic experience. • The work of the most celebrated Belgian artist of the twentieth century. Xavier Canonne, an expert on Surrealist painting, art historian and curator, author and scholar, is the director of the Musée de la Photographie de Char- leroi. Julie Waseige, art historian and researcher for the Royal Museums of Belgium, is scientific collaborator at the Musée Magritte in Brussels.
