January 2018, Volume 5, Issue 1 JETIR (ISSN-2349-5162) RELIGIOUS FANATICISM IN KHUSHWANT SINGH'S “TRAIN TO PAKISTAN” 1Dr Preeti Pareek Assistant Professors Government College of Engineering and Technology Bikaner Rajasthan India Abstract: Khushwant Singh through religious fanaticism highlights the trauma of Nooran, the daughter of a blind Muslim weaver who had an affair with Jugga a Hindu boy. Their affair paradoxically keeps the village at peace, because the local Sikhs are terrified of him, and the girl he loves is the daughter of the local Muslim leader for whom, at any rate, they have a good deal of sympathy. Their potentially dangerous relationship function to keep Mano Majra at peace until the outside world interviews and Nooran is forced to leave Mano Majra. The situation only gets out of control by an unscheduled train which stops at the station and is full of dead people. Mano Majra, the peaceful village known for its serenity and brotherhood among Hindus and Muslims becomes a battlefield. When a train arrives carrying the bodies of the dead Sikhs, tension prevails, neither the magistrate nor the police are able to stem the rising tide of violence. Key Words-Trauma, Bloodshed ,religious Fanaticsm Full Length Khushwant Singh’s novel Train to Pakistan was published in 1956. This novel is set at the time of partition and it presents the realistic picture of the pre-partition era, the communal riots, the freedom struggle and the exploitation of women. Through this novel Khushwant Singh wants to reveal how a small peaceful town Mano Majra turns into a battle field due to racial fanaticism. -

Treatment of Trauma in Khushwant Singh’s Train to Pakistan Dr Sulagna Mohanty Assistant Professor, Department of English & Humanities, Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham, Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu, Mail: [email protected], Phone: 08328952626 ABSTRACT At the stroke of the midnight on 15 August 1947, India obtains its independence from the British rule; this moment of celebration is, however, marred by the horrendous event of partition. This catastrophic event has earned the notoriety of being one of the most painful events in recorded history of India. Writer Khushwant Singh is someone who has lived through the trauma of partition and suffered from the agony, both personal as well as national. His disturbing encounter with partition drives him to put in writing the novel Train to Pakistan which portrays the harrowing event of partition that occurs in August 1947 in its ghastly details. This paper intends to focus on the impact of trauma on the psyche of the twin nations, namely India and Pakistan from a postcolonial point of view. It aims at highlighting the evolution of characters in the backdrop of death, carnage and bloodshed that occur during the partition of India and Pakistan. Keywords: Partition, Trauma, Victims, Psyche, Objectification Introduction Trauma being a terrifying upshot of memory, especially those in the deepest realms of human psyche, literature written with reference to such memories becomes a horrid recollection of trauma. It is the pain and agony which reminds one of the distressing past and keeps on haunting occasionally an individual and sometimes an entire nation as it ranges “from the public and historical to the private and memorial” (Luckhurst 497). -

Rubin, Ph.D. ABSTRACT In the summer of 1947 the British government granted India its independence and partitioned the colony into two nations: the Dominion of Pakistan and the Union of India. The partition displaced over 10 million people and an estimated one million people died in this transfer of populations. Khushwant Singh’s Train to Pakistan (1956) provides a narrative account of the partition of India and the creation of Pakistan, which marked a bloody period of South Asian history. Building from previous scholarship on post-colonial national identities and the process by which post-colonial nationalism makes itself coherent, this project demonstrates the way in which individual subjectivity is altered by partition by engaging with Khushwant Singh’s novel. In order to illustrate the contours of a partitioned subject, this project has three interrelated sections. Chapter One provides a history of the 1947 Partition of India and a discussion of Khushwant Singh’s novel, and draws upon the work of a group of theorists such as Frantz Fanon, Michel Foucault, and Giorgio Agamben to address the complexities of the relationships between the post-colonial and partition state, a subject that, with the exception of Joe Cleary’s Literature, Partition, and the Nation State, few have addressed. -

Vasanthi Assistant Professor of English Adhiyaman Arts & Science College for Women, Uthangarai [email protected] =============================================================== Literature, in its wide range of sense, it is a written work of any single body. Literature is a writing that is considered to be an art. It is used to refer to all written accounts, though living at or belonging to the same time definitions extend the term to include text that are sung or spoken. It is a beautiful product of language which tells more imagination rather than truth, by Julian Barnes. The partition of the Indian sub-continent is remembered for the massacre and the problems aroused during migration of masses of people for their living. The partition has left a scar that cannot be erased from the pages of history. Urvashi Butalia describes partition as follows: The political partition of India caused one of the great human convulsions of history… twelve million people moved between the new, truncated India and the two wings, East and West, of the newly created Pakistan…. Estimates of the dead vary from 200,000 to two million but that somewhere around a million people died is now widely accepted…75,000 women are thought to have been abducted and raped by men of religious different from their own (and indeed sometimes by men of their own religion). -

Narayan: My Days, (ii) Khushwant Singh: Truth, Love and a Little Malice The present chapter discusses the autobiographies of those writers who made a mark on the literary scene of India which, in some ways, is of basic significance. They are R. K. Narayan and Khushwant Singh. They come from two different states of India. There is a lot of difference in their background, their financial condition, their environment and the way they were brought up. It will be interesting to see the journey of these two in the world of letters and thought as depicted in their autobiographies. R. K.Narayan: My Days R. K. Narayan is that name without which the history of Indian English literature cannot be complete. Narayan was among the famous trio of Indian English fiction, the other two being Raja Rao and Mulk Raj Anand. Everybody, who has read his novels or has seen the television serial, Malgudi Days based on Narayan's celebrated book Swami and Friends is enchanted by Narayan's brilliant powers of minute observation, skill of sketching characters, use of lucid language and the way he has created a tiny piece of India in his celebrated imaginary town of 'Malgudi'. He uses conventional style of writing and it is deceptively simple. It is like the traditional story teller. However, in his writing, a comic and sarcastic surface exists above deeply serious depths. His autobiography is no exception to it. -

Its publication inaugurated what has been called 'South Asian Partition Fiction in English' (Roy 2010). It remains, to date, one of the most poignant and realistic fictional accounts depicting the welter of partition and saw a sensitive screen adaptation in 1998 by Pamela Rooks. It captures one of the most horrific symbols of partition—that of the burning, charred and lifeless trains that moved migrants and evacuated refugees from one side of the border to the other. The trains that previously served to bring people and goods from disparate worlds closer together were overnight turned into targets of mob attacks and transporters of mass corpses. They thus became an emblem, a much-photographed representation (Kapoor 2013) of the wider violence and ethnic cleansing that was taking place in Panjab (Ahmed 2002: 9-28); one of the two regions divided to make way for the two new nation-states. Carriages of conciliation and communication in colonial Punjab were 'reeling on the rails' in the aftermath of August 1947 (Chatterjee 2017). Today, as travels (train/road) across the line that partitioned FOCUS India have perforce trickled down to a minimum, literature too is limited to 'gazing at neighbours' (Ghosh 2017). -

The northern part predominantly Muslim, became nation of Pakistan and the southern predominantly Hindu became the Republic of India, the partition however devastated both India and Pakistan as the process claimed many lives in riots, rapes, murders and looting. The two countries began their independence with ruined economics and lands without established, not only this but also about fifteen million people were displaced from their homes. The partition of India was on important event not only in the history of Indian sub- continent but in world history. Its chief reason was the communal thinking of both Hindus and muslims. The partition was exceptionally brutal and large in scale and unleashed misery and loss of lives and property as millions of refugees fled either Pakistan or India. Fictionalized Indian English Speech and the Representations of Ideology in Indian Novels in English. Doctor of Philosophy (English), August 2009, 271 pp., 3 tables, 12 illustrations, references, 125 titles. I investigate the spoken dialogue of four Indian novels in English: Mulk Raj Anand’s Untouchable (1935), Khushwant Singh’s Train to Pakistan (1956), Rasipuram Krishnaswami Narayan’s The World of Nagaraj (1990), and Rohinton Mistry’s Family Matters (2002). Roger Fowler has said that literature, as a form of discourse, articulates ideology; it is through linguistic criticism (combination of literary criticism and linguistic analyses) that the ideologies in a literary text are uncovered. Shobhana Chelliah in her study of Indian novels in English concludes that the authors use Indian English (IndE) as a device to characterize buffoons and villains. Drawing upon Fowler’s and Chelliah’s framework, my investigation employs linguistic criticism of the four novels to expose the ideologies reflected in the use of fictionalized English in the Indian context. A quantitative inquiry based on thirty-five IndE features reveals that the authors appropriate these features, either to a greater or lesser degree, to almost all their characters, suggesting that IndE functions as the mainstream variety in these novels and creating an illusion that the authors are merely representing the characters’ unique Indian worldviews.
