Train to Pakistan film, an adaptation from Khushwant Singh's 1956 classic novel by the same name set in the Partition of India of 1947 and directed by Pamela Rooks was released in 1998. The film stars Nirmal Pandey, Rajit Kapur, Mohan Agashe, Smriti Mishra, Mangal Dhillon and Divya Dutta. Plot Analysis Train to Pakistan is a harrowing tale of a country divided by religious and political differences. The narrative takes place during the historic Partition of India in the summer of 1947, which is considered one of the bloodiest times in the country’s history. This division of India into two separate states caused a nationwide resettlement, thus dividing the previously single country into a Hindu India and a Muslim Pakistan, with devastating results. With the division of the country on the basis of belief systems, Singh’s narrative marks how entire families were made to abandon their lives and uproot themselves to re-align their lives based on religious allegiance to ensure safety and survival. The resettlement, however, was anything but safe and secure for those caught up in the ensuing violence. Trying to quickly avoid the oncoming troubles, people fled on foot, cart and train. Yet as these refugees attempted to flee the violence, they often became caught up in sanctioning violence themselves or were the victims of violence as Hindus and Muslims fought all over the country. -

Narayan: My Days, (ii) Khushwant Singh: Truth, Love and a Little Malice The present chapter discusses the autobiographies of those writers who made a mark on the literary scene of India which, in some ways, is of basic significance. They are R. K. Narayan and Khushwant Singh. They come from two different states of India. There is a lot of difference in their background, their financial condition, their environment and the way they were brought up. It will be interesting to see the journey of these two in the world of letters and thought as depicted in their autobiographies. R. K.Narayan: My Days R. K. Narayan is that name without which the history of Indian English literature cannot be complete. Narayan was among the famous trio of Indian English fiction, the other two being Raja Rao and Mulk Raj Anand. Everybody, who has read his novels or has seen the television serial, Malgudi Days based on Narayan's celebrated book Swami and Friends is enchanted by Narayan's brilliant powers of minute observation, skill of sketching characters, use of lucid language and the way he has created a tiny piece of India in his celebrated imaginary town of 'Malgudi'. He uses conventional style of writing and it is deceptively simple. It is like the traditional story teller. However, in his writing, a comic and sarcastic surface exists above deeply serious depths. His autobiography is no exception to it. -

ABSTRACT Films make a wider audience than literature as they move across the wall of class, literacy, religion and even language. Not only do they mirror reality, they also put up actuality. Its impact more than text makes very important work through the language and melodrama of the medium which make public aware of detailness and indistinctness that lie within. Film, cinema, movies, motion pictures covers a wide range of topics. It covers many aspects of the study of film and has complex interaction and relations. The studies of film include a wide variety of types, social issues, gender issues, politics and partition etc. Adapting a film from the novel or short story is a recreation which requires task and selective interpretation. KEY WORDS: class, literacy, religion and even language , politics and partition. INTRODUCTION Literacy works being adapted into film is a rich source of material for movies. Though the medium are working together but their features are dissimilar. I have therefore chosen novel “Train to Pakistan” by Khushwant Singh. Khushwant Singh was born on 1915 in Hadali pre-partition Punjab, now in Pakistan. He was one of the India’s most widely read and controversial writer, witnesses, all major Political, Social and Cultural events in modern Indian history. -
