The history is cloudy and there are con- flicting claims. The first blues songs, at least in embryonic form, may have oc- curred as far back as 1860 in the planta- tion fields, but the first documented blues song is generally credited to William Christopher Handy (1873-1958), with 4651 1st Ave SE “Memphis Blues” published on paper in Cedar Rapids, IA 1912. According to legend, Handy was 52402 duped into thinking the song was worth- 319.378.1720 less and consequently sold the copyright guitarcenter.com for (some say) as little as $50. Popular legend has it that one afternoon at a Mississippi train station Handy heard a wandering musician picking a guitar with a knife blade and singing “Going where the Southern crosses the Yellow Tomaso’s Dog” (two railroad lines). According to legend, this unexpected, unique song and Pizza style is what inspired “Memphis Blues”. Today, Handy is remembered by the an- nual “W. C.
