580-St. Cecilia Page 6 February 17, 2019 6th Sunday in Ordinary Time

My Dear Parishioners, Today we come to the Sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time in our celebration of the Lord’s Day. The Scriptural texts speak of the Lord’s ways and those who embrace those ways by virtue of faith. The gift of faith is indeed that important ingredient which accommodates the ways of God into one’s life even at great expense. Suffering can be expected when courageously adhering to the life to which the Lord is calling. However, when one trusts in the Lord there is nothing to fear “For the Lord watches over the way of the just, but the way of the wicked vanishes.” (Psalm 1:6) FAITH! Our faith is ratified each week when we come here, as a family, to celebrate the first day of the week when the Lord Jesus rose from the dead in the glory of His Holy Resurrection. He is the Lord of life who grants eternal life to all who hope in Him. In today’s epistle reading the Apostles Paul wrote to the Corinthians: “But now Christ has been raised from the dead, the first fruits of those who have fallen asleep.” Our faith celebrates LIFE! Life is the great gift we received from our Creator. Every Sunday is our call to celebrate Christ’s defeat of death and to reaffirm our proclamation of life, temporal and eternal! The darkness of death settles in many parts of our country and world where life is not cherished because of violence produced by hatred and pride. Governors of New York and Virginia have supported and welcomed the killing of babies in the womb even as they are being born and, HORRIBLY, for some time after birth as well – all of it legal in the eyes of some but not in the eyes of the ALMIGHTY AND HOLY ONE! I believe that the cheapening of life is a result of the secularization of the Lord’s Day. Sunday is no longer seen as “the Lord’s Day” with the day being lived differently from the rest of the week. Regular worship in church is replaced with other activi- ties. Spending time with family and loved ones is sacrificed for selfish pursuits. Rather than resting and reflecting we fill every minute with things which usually bring anxiety. LIFE? The United States, Canada, Australia, the nations of Europe, to name a few, once considered Christian countries, now abor- tion and death countries! It’s true! When we reject the celebration of the Lord’s Day, we then move toward our welcoming of death and darkness – no hope! Let us not be afraid to live differently from our neighbors! Let us celebrate the Lord’s Day, the weekly reminder of LIFE with our participation in the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass. We come to worship Christ Risen from the dead (not a Pope, a Bishop, a Priest or anybody else – only Our Savior Jesus Christ). When others will try to discourage you recall the words of the Lord Jesus recorded in today’s Gospel: “Blessed are you when people hate you, and when they exclude and insult you, and de- nounce your name as evil on account of the Son of Man. Rejoice and leap for joy on that day! Behold, your reward will be great in heaven!” Have a blessed week and see you in church next Sunday! God bless you, Father Zig P.S. I was not on vacation last week; I was in the rectory with the flu!

ST. OF OUR LADY OF SORROWS, Cleric February 27—Patron of Clerics

BORN in 1838, this Saint of modern times was originally named Francis after the great Saint of his native city Assisi. He attended the Jesuit college of Spoleto, where he was a great favorite with his fellow students and professors. Fas- tidious in manner and dress, he was fond of literature and the theater. However, he decided to leave the world after being miraculously cured from two bouts of illness. He was guided by Our Lady into the Passionist Institute, where he took the name Gabriel and became a veritable Apostle of her Sorrows. At twenty-four years of age he died of tuberculosis, having already attained to a heroic de- gree of sanctity by a life of self-denial and great devotion to Our Lord’s Passion. He was canonized in 1920 by Pope Benedict XV and is the patron of youth, especially of young religious. His life was without any miraculous event; after his death (in 1862) many miracles occurred at his tomb in Isola di Gran Sasso, Italy.

PRAYER God, You inspired St. Gabriel to strive for perfect charity and so attain Your Kingdom at the end of his pilgrimage on earth. Strengthen us through his intercession that we may advance rejoicing in the way of love. Amen.
