580-St. Cecilia Page 6 February 21, 2021 1st Sunday of Lent

My dear parishioners, We commemorate the First Sunday of Lent as we gather to celebrate the Lord’s Day. Each year on the First Sunday of Lent we read of the Lord Jesus’ retreat into the desert following His baptism by John. For 40 days the Lord entered into prayer and fasting so as to prepare Himself for the ministry He was to begin. For three years He proclaimed the Good News of God’s Kingdom by preaching and miracles, thus overcoming the works of the devil. Jesus’ final victory over the forces of evil will be His death upon the Cross and His holy Resurrection which will bring salvation to all who believe in Him. We stand at the threshold of this holy season of Lent to join with the Lord Jesus in a “desert experience” of prayer, fasting and good works; the three disciplines which characterize the season of Lent. All of us who are physically able are encouraged to enter into the disciplines of Lent, both old and young. Parents have the special duty to introduce their young ones to Lent by talking to them about Lent and the suffering Jesus endured for our salvation. The pious practice of “giving up something for Lent” was an experience I was familiar with as a little boy attending Catholic school. Not eating meat on the Fridays of Lent was also something I remembered as I opened my lunch box at school to find a tuna sandwich or PBJ sandwich. My parents taught me and my brothers about Lent by observing the disciplines at home. As a boy I remember going with my parents to church on the Wednesday and Friday evenings of Lent for Stations of the Cross and Lenten devotions. I encourage our young parents to do similar – you have the duty to pass our traditions onto your children for their spiritual benefit. I remind all of you that Lent is the time for us to heed the words of Jesus which we find in today’s Gospel: “This is the time of fulfillment. The Kingdom of God is at hand. Repent, and believe in the Gospel.” I hope that you will attend the Stations of the Cross on Friday as we recall the painful journey the Lord Jesus traveled for our salvation. You are encouraged to change your weekly routine also by attending one of the morning Masses before you head out for work or school. Daily Mass is a wonder- ful way to start the day! Remember your prayers at home: pray the Rosary, read the Bible (Pope Francis just said, “Turn off the TV and pick up the Bible!), or read a book or article which will help your meditation. Lent is a rigorous time, let’s be strong and the recall the words from today’s epistle reading: “Christ suffered for sins once, the righteous for the sake of the unrighteous, that He might lead you to God.” HAPPY LENT! Father Zig

ST. , Bishop and February 21 – Patron of Headache Sufferers

A DEVOTED collaborator of Pope St. Gregory VII and, like him, a Benedictine, St. Peter Damian was one of the most glorious lights of the Church in the 11th century. Born in Revenna in 1007, he became a Camaldolese monk at the monastery of Fonte Avellana, of which he became Abbot. He later became Cardinal and Bishop of Ostia and Velletri.

St. Peter Damian worked zealously for the internal reform of the Church by fighting against such abuses as simony and incontinence. He wrote many works on ascetical theology. He is numbered as one of the Doctors of the Church and died at Faenza in 1072.

PRAYER Almighty God, help us to follow the teachings and example of St. Peter. Placing Christ above all things, may we be ever active in the service of Your Church and attain the joys of eternal light. Amen.
