As botanists worked to detect “hidden affinities” between plants that would enable them to identify the so-called natural families to which even anomalous species belonged, they relied on comparison as their basic methodological procedure, making it essential for them to have access to collections. In their scientific writings, professional botanists tended to steer clear of any emphasis on plant exoticism. While botany engaged in dialogue with various types of approaches, the field essentially normalized the exotic. The article’s exploration of the hermetic style of scientific texts and the way botanists incorporated illustrators’ work sheds light on the complexity of the spaces where natural history was done, in a context where plants were circulating from around the globe. The Plant Collection of the 6Th Earl of Coventry at Croome Park, Worcestershire
margaret stone, ann hooper, pamela shaw and lesley tanner an eighteenth-century obsession – the plant collection of the 6th earl of coventry at croome park, worcestershire The parkland at Croome, Worcestershire, was the frst landscape designed by Lancelot Brown, employed by George William, 6th Earl of Coventry. The Earl amassed a vast, diverse plant collection, for which over six hundred bills have survived; they cover more than sixty years from 1747 to his death in 1809. Large numbers of plants were purchased at enormous cost and there were many frst introductions to Britain. By the end of the eighteenth century this was arguably the fnest private collection ever formed. This paper is a study of that collection. in 1751, george william, viscount Deerhurst, succeeded to the title of 6th earl of coventry; he was twenty-eight years old and had been managing the croome estate for three years (figure 1). he had demolished the early eighteenth-century formal gardens and now employed lancelot brown as clerk of works to remodel the seventeenth- century house. brown had worked at stowe, buckinghamshire, for ten years between 1740 and 1751, acquiring experience in supervising building work and remodelling the lake; he was by then thirty-fve years old. the exterior of croome court shows considerable similarity to william kent’s neo-palladian holkham hall, norfolk. the earl must have been deeply involved in the project; he kept his invoices carefully, often annotating them, and they have survived to the present (figure 2).1 clearly, he had a good working relationship with brown, who was soon appointed to develop the grounds. -
Options for the Risk Management of Bushfires in the Blue Mountains A
A FIERY DEBATE—PUTTING ANGER ON THE BACKBURNER "Snow and sleet are falling on two bushfires burning in the Blue Mountains west of Sydney." ABC Radio news, 15 November 2006. Spoken without a trace of irony, the words of the newsreader encapsulate the extraordinary, and sometimes perversely unpredictable, nature of life in this landscape forged by fire. The Grose Valley holds a special place in the hearts of Australia’s conservationists, being the site of the first great victory for the movement in Australia in 1931-32—but it would not be as we know and love it if it were not occasionally shrouded in smoke rather than mist. However, coming after a long period of drought and amidst dire warnings that Australia is facing an even hotter and drier future, the most recent fire in the Grose Valley has reignited an increasingly heated debate over fire management practices, both within the local community and further afield. (As a result of these concerns, the Blue Mountains World Heritage Institute hosted a forum on the Grose Valley fire in February, the outcomes of which are discussed on page 3.) So with bushfires predicted to increase in both frequency and intensity, how do we protect people and property whilst preserving the biological integrity of the World Heritage Area? How well do we understand the ecological responses to fire? Are we managing fire risk in the most appropriate way for both the community and the environment? The Blue Mountains Conservation Society has organised a meeting to examine these issues—come and hear five experts in fire management and ecology give their views, with the opportunity for questions and discussion afterwards. -

Although no preserved material was mentioned in the original description, an illustration by Thomas Duncanson painted a few years earlier would have been available to W.T. Aiton at the time he described it and it matches his description. Therefore this illustration is designated as the lectotype for Oxalis bowiei. Botanic Gardens and the Aesthetics of Artifice Cairns Craig In 1651 Andrew Balfour, later one of the founders of the Edinburgh Botanic Garden, visited Blois in France, where the physic garden developed by Robert Morison, then physician to the Duc d’Orléans, had become famous for its col- lection of plants that could be exploited for medicinal purposes. Morison, from Aberdeen, had left Scotland after being wounded fighting on the Royalist side against Cromwell’s forces in the battle of the Bridge of Dee in 1639. Having, like many other royalist exiles, taken up residence in France, he obtained a doctorate in medicine at Angers and went on to study botany in Paris with Vespasian Robin, then prominent in the introduction of North American plants into European horticulture. Balfour’s meeting with Morison was to lead to a lifelong friendship in which each supported the other’s botanical studies. Morison returned to Britain with Charles II in 1660, to become the King’s physician and subsequently Professor of Botany at Oxford; Balfour, having developed a reputation as a doctor first in St Andrews and then in Edinburgh, extended his medical practice by establishing, along with his cousin Robert Sibbald, who had also trained in France, a ‘physic garden’ to emulate those on the Continent, many of which Balfour had visited while on a ‘grand tour’ with the young Earl of Rochester during the years 1661–4. Balfour and Sibbald’s physic garden was transformed into a botanic garden after the unexpected death in 1671 of one of Balfour’s protégés, Patrick Murray (or Morray), Baron of Livingston (or Levengstone), who had been on a tour of the gardens of France. -

To examine claims that the role of botanical art in systematic botany is diminishing because of advances in photography, this review considers relevant literature and includes a quantitative analysis of trends in modern journals, monographs and floras. Our focus is on southern hemisphere systematic botany because, relative to the northern hemisphere, this is poorly represented in modern reviews of botanical art and photography. An analysis of all digitally available papers in Nuytsia, the Journal of the Adelaide Botanic Garden, Muelleria, Telopea, Austrobaileya and Systematic Botany established that, although photographic illustrations have increased since 2000, botanical illustrations have not always diminished. The cause of these trends is unknown, but it is likely to be due to several factors, including sourcing funding for production of botanical illustration, editorial preference for the use of illustrations or photographs, author preference for either illustrations or photographs, and moving to online publication, with no charges for colour reproduction. Moreover, the inclusion of botanical artists as co-authors in some scientific publications signals an ongoing and important role. Botanical illustration brings sharp focus and meticulous attention to detail regarding form and structure of plants. -

Flora Graeca is a work in ten folio volumes, published in London between 1806 and 1840. It is based on the botanical collections made by John Sibthorp during his travels in what is now Cyprus, Greece, Italy and Turkey and the pictorial documentation of the plants produced by Ferdinand Bauer. The text was written by James Edward Smith, Robert Brown and John Lindley. Flora Graeca was printed in a tiny edition with the result that many botanists considered it to be non-existent or as only a manuscript. This paper deals with the few copies of Flora Graeca kept today in libraries on the European continent and their historical backgrounds – three in Paris, one in Vienna and Darmstadt respectively, all apparently subscription copies, while the copies in St. Petersburg and Copenhagen were previously owned by Fredrick North, 5th Earl of Guildford, and John Platt. The botanical affiliations of the previous owners, among them Franz I, Emperor of Austria, and Ludwig I, Grand Duke of Hesse, are explained. The libraries on the European continent that have copies of the so-called Bohn reissue of Flora Graeca are listed. Particular attention is given to the Belgrade copy, a hybrid consisting of printed title matter with some of the landscapes copied by hand and the 966 engravings, whereas all text pages, indices and appendices have been written on a type writer. -

The first part of the following paper deals with the life, travels, professional career as a natural history painter, use of colour charts and heritage of Ferdinand Bauer. The use of Ferdinand Bauer’s colour chart(s) by other painters is also discussed. It is followed by a short history of the use of colour charts. The final part discusses the attribution of watercolours preserved at the Vienna Natural History Museum that have hitherto been ascribed to Ferdinand Bauer. They are compared to pictures at the Austrian National Library, at the Museum of Applied Arts in Vienna and at the Museum für Kunst und Gewerbe in Hamburg that were produced by Joseph Knapp and should be attributed to him using evidence from the use of specific paper and some technical details. Australia, Austria, botanical illustration, colour, Schönbrunn Gardens A short summary of Ferdinand Bauer’s life and achievements Ferdinand Lucas Bauer was born the fifth son of seven children to Lucas and Theresia Bauer (née Hirsch) on January 20, 1760 at Feldsberg in northern Lower Austria (since 1920 known as Valtice in southern Moravia, a part of the Czech Republic). His father, Lucas Bauer, was Prince Josef Wenzel von Liechtenstein’s court painter in Feldsberg from 1744 onwards.
