Over the course of the past 60 years, the dark stain that is the Lavender Scare has been a subtly recurring theme in popular culture, and in light of the still prevalent, highly problematic attitudes towards transgender and homosexual rights today, it's both reassuring and saddening to know that the cultural blight it provides is still being addressed. Today, the event is examined across several mediums, including a documentary, an opera, and a new art exhibition. Who in their right mind would put themselves through such insanity, I often wondered when speaking with fellow graduate students pursuing such a goal. August 2020 From Archival Silence to Screaming Queens: Reconstructing the Compton’s Cafeteria Riot By Isaac Fellman & Susan Stryker On an August evening in 1966, three years before the Stonewall riots in New York City, the patrons of the Compton’s Cafeteria on Taylor and Turk Streets in San Francisco’s Tenderloin district fought back against police harassment. Little documentary evidence survives of this key moment in transgender history. The photograph above from the GLBT Historical Society’s archives is an extremely rare still of the interior of the Compton’s location in question, and the exact date the riot occurred has never been determined. Our archives contain much of the documentation that does survive, which enabled historian and former GLBT Historical Society executive director Susan Stryker to research the event in the early 2000s. Together with Victor Silverman, Stryker produced the Emmy Award-winning 2005 documentary Screaming Queens, which succeeded in bringing the riot to greater public awareness. Our special program on August 5 features a screening of Screaming Queens and a conversation with Stryker. Reference archivist Isaac Fellman, who has been working extensively with our transgender-related collections, interviewed Stryker about how she uncovered the legacy of Compton’s. The story of Compton’s exposes gaps in archives; it exists in memory, but official sources, records and contemporary news reporting are scarce. Did this scarcity influence your process and philosophy as a historian? The scarcity of traditional primary-document sources really did require me to embrace creative and nontraditional research methodologies. One of the most important strategies was simply walking in the neighborhood, studying San Francisco’s urban history, using the GLBT Historical Society’s sites database to map historic trans-serving bars and SROs, and reading a lot of spatial and architectural theory. -

It is commonly thought that Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgendered (LGBT) history is only for LGBT people. This is a false assumption. In out current age of a continually expanding communication network, a given individual will inevitably e interacting with thousands of people, many of them of other nationalities, of other races, and many of them LGBT. Thus, it is crucial for all people to understand the past and possible contributions of all others. There is no room in our society for bigotry, for prejudiced views, or for the simple omission of any group from public knowledge. In acknowledging LGBT history, one teaches respect for all people, regardless of race, gender, nationality, or sexual orientation. By recognizing the accomplishments of LGBT people in our common history, we are also recognizing that LGBT history affects all of us. The people presented here are not amazing because they are LGBT, but because they accomplished great feats of intellect and action. These accomplishments are amplified when we consider the amount of energy these people were required to expend fighting for recognition in a society which refused to accept their contributions because of their sexuality, or fighting their own fear and self-condemnation, as in the case of Michael Wigglesworth and countless others. -

RESEARCH BRIEF THE EXPERIENCES OF LGBT STUDENTS IN SCHOOL ATHLETICS For students in general, participation in sports and physical activity at school has been shown to have positive effects on their physical health, self-esteem, and sense of connectedness to their schools. Involvement in extracurricular sports has also been shown to have academic benefits, both directly through school policies requiring athletes to maintain minimum GPA’s and indirectly by strengthening students’ identification with their school communities.1 Unfortunately, some re- search suggests that lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) students may not have access to the benefits of par- ticipating in school athletics because they may be less likely than their non-LGBT peers to attend Physical Education (P.E.) classes or play on a sports team.2 Using data from GLSEN’s 2011 National School Climate Survey, this brief exam- ines LGBT students’ experiences in school athletics, including the benefits of their involvement and the barriers to their participation. FACT: Physical Education classes were unsafe environments for many LGBT students. As with most secondary students in the U.S.,3 most (73.0%) LGBT students took a P.E. or gym class at school in the past year. Unfortunately, many LGBT students had been harassed or assaulted while attending these classes. More than half of LGBT students who took a P.E. class were bullied or harassed during P.E. because of their sexual orientation (52.8%) or gender expression (50.9%; see Figure 1). Figure 1. Primer On Lesbian- Baiting NATIONAL ORGANIZATION Published by THE NOW NATIONAL TASK FORCE ON SEXUALITY & LESBIANISM Kay Whitlock and Robin Smith Co-Coordinators April 1977 Prepared by Kay Whitlock NOW Policy Background The NOW National Task Force on Sexuality and Lesbianism was established in 19 71, two years after the NOW membership at its national conference in Los Angeles adopted a resolution stating that "a woman's right to her own person includes the right to define and express her own sexuality and to choose her own lifestyle." In 19 71, NOW formally went on record as recognizing "the double oppression of women who are lesbians" and stated that a feminist program of action must include action on behalf of lesbian rights. In 197 3, in Washington, D.C., the NOW National Conference approved a resolution committing NOW to work for legislation prohibiting discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation. On October 27, 1975, NOW members attending the National Conference in Philadelphia approved a resolution designating the accomplishment of lesbian rights as one of NOW's national priorities. The resolution stated that "abridgement of the basic rights of any woman diminishes the freedom of all of us," and proponents of the resolution argued that too little had been accomplished--by NOW, by the feminist movement in general, and by the various levels of government--with regard to securing such rights for lesbians. Implicit in all of these resolutions was the commitment of NOW as an organization to halt internal discrimination against lesbians. -

Bonham Centre for Sexual Diversity Studies University of Toronto 2015 ABSTRACT Lesbian and gay archives, particularly those established within the context of the homophile, gay liberation, and lesbian feminist movements, serve as social movement organizations (SMOs). That is, they are organizational and administrative members of activist communities that acquire, manage, and share resources for the purpose of collective action for social change. Archives are nevertheless absent from literature on social movements and social movement theory. This project was designed to expand on current research in the fields of archival studies, social movement studies, and sexuality studies to better understand the experiences of lesbian and gay archives. A multiple case study was conducted at four community grown archives: The Canadian Lesbian and Gay Archives, the ONE National Gay and Lesbian Archives, The June L. Mazer Lesbian Archives, and the Lesbian Herstory Archives. Site visits took place over six months in 2013 and 2014, during which time interviews were conducted with 33 community archivists, volunteers, and community partners. In addition, more than 20,000 pages of organizational records related to the founding and development of these archives were reviewed. By tracing the emergence, development, and resource struggles of four lesbian and gay archives, this dissertation shows how these organizations have been shaped by broader movement goals, local geographies, socio-political structures, and the particular interests and energies of those who have nurtured their collections over the years.
