Last night’s loss gives Rancho a 12-5 record against Visalia in 2021 and 8-3 here in Visalia. The club swept their only other series here at Valley Strong Ballpark back in July, going 6-0. NORTH W L PCT GB Fresno 65 36 .644 - YESTERDAY’S GAME: Rancho couldn’t complete the rally last night, as they fell a run shy in Visalia on Saturday night, losing 6-5 San Jose 63 38 .624 2 to the Rawhide at Valley Strong Ballpark. The Quakes took a 2-0 lead after a half-inning, as Sam McWilliams blasted a two-run shot Modesto 56 45 .554 9 against Visalia starter and eventual winner Avery Short (1-5). The Rawhide scored the game’s next six runs though, forcing Rancho to Stockton 39 60 .394 25 come from behind. The Quakes would score the game’s final three runs to pull within a run and even put the tying run at third base with one out in the ninth. Visalia closer Hugh Fisher got Jose Ramos to ground to second baseman , Jr. though, as his SOUTH W L PCT GB throw cut down Edwin Mateo at the plate. McWilliams followed by striking out to end the game and give Fisher his second save of Rancho Cucamonga 54 46 .540 - the series. Inland Empire 50 49 .505 3.5 VISALIA ON VERGE OF A FIRST: At just 30-71, the Visalia Rawhide have obviously had a tough year. Last night’s win gives Lake Elsinore 44 56 .440 10 them three of five in the current series against the Quakes and a chance at winning their first series of 2021. They had split four series Visalia 30 71 .297 24.5 prior to this one, (two against Inland Empire and one each against Lake Elsinore and Fresno) so this gives them at least a fifth split 2021 PLAYOFF STANDINGS this year, even without a win today. NORTH W L PCT GB MCWILLIAMS RED-HOT: Sam McWilliams is having a great series in Visalia, as he has eight hits in 20 at-bats with two home Fresno 65 36 .644 +2 runs and six RBIs. His August is solid as well, as he’s batting .343 with four homers and 13 RBIs in 18 games. McWilliams missed five San Jose 63 38 .624 - of ths six-games against San Jose last week, after taking a pitch off his left wrist. Modesto 56 45 .554 7 DOG DAYS OF AUGUST: Even though the season began in May, these are still the “dog days of August” around minor league Rancho Cucamonga 54 46 .540 8.5 , especially in Low-A, where many players are getting their first taste of a full season of pro-ball. After a terrific July in which Inland Empire 50 49 .505 12 they went 18-9, the Quakes are just 11-13 in August. Offensively, there are several Quakes enjoying a terrific month, as it’s the pitch- ing (5.83 ERA) that’s having a rough go of it. Imanol Vargas (.342 avg) and Sam McWilliams (.343) are both having their best months YESTERDAY’S SCORES of the season, with Vargas leading the team with seven homers and 20 RBIs in 21 games. Fresno 10 Modesto 9 PLAYOFF UPDATE!: The 2021 Playoffs will look and feel differently than any other year, as this year’s edition will see the top two Visalia 6 Rancho Cucamonga 5 teams compete in a championship series, regardless of division. The currently have the best record in the league and Lake Elsinore 1 San Jose 0 have a two-game lead over San Jose, who would be the #2 seed. Rancho, losers of eight of their last 11, has fallen to fourth place over- Inland Empire at Stockton (PPD Covid-19) all, currently 8.5 San Jose. With San Jose winning the season-long series (10-2) over Rancho, the Quakes must have a better record overall, so the San Jose lead is more like a 9.5 game advantage. The 2022 season will see the league move to a 132-game TODAY’S GAMES schedule and the first-half and second-half winners of each respective division meet in the playoffs. Rancho Cucamonga at Visalia, 1:00 PM 2021 DRAFT: Thanks to a deep Dodgers’ farm system that remains strong despite the loss of their top two prospects at the trade San Jose at Lake Elsinore, 4:05 PM deadline, the Quakes have just two players on their 30-man roster that were drafted in the recent 2021 draft. Both Nick Nastrini Modesto at Fresno, 5:05 PM (fourth round) and Emmett Sheehan (sixth round) were called up less than two weeks ago, as both pitched in last night’s win. The Inland Empire at Stockton, 6:05 PM Rawhide on the other hand, now have nine players that were drafted back in July’s draft. In addition, Arizona has assigned four free agents that were signed after this year’s draft, to the Visalia roster, giving them 13 players that weren’t even a part of Arizona’s farm TUESDAY’S GAMES system just two months ago. MLB.com currently lists Arizona as having the ninth-best farm system in baseball, while the Dodgers Visalia at San Jose, 6:30 PM currently rank as the 16th-best farm system. Former Quake Diego Cartaya now profiles as LA’s best prospect. Lake Elsinore at Rancho Cucamonga, 6:30 PM KENDALL WILLIAMS: Kendall Williams makes his 20th appearance and 16th start of the year, his fourth appearance and second Inland Empire at Modesto, 7:05 PM start against the Rawhide. In his last outing, Williams allowed six runs on six hits over three relief innings on Tuesday night in the Fresno at Stockton, 7:05 PM series-opener. Williams is 1-0 with a 6.55 ERA overall against the Rawhide this year, allowing eight runs on 13 hits over 11 total in- nings. Williams was drafted in the second round by the Blue Jays in 2019 and was traded to the Dodgers as part of the Ross Stripling 2021 QUAKES AT A GLANCE trade at the 2020 trade deadline. 1st Half Record: 32-27 LUKE ALBRIGHT: Visalia sends Luke Albright to the mound, as he makes his third start of the year and his second against the 2nd Half Record: 22-19 Quakes in this series.
