    Pandeiro 1 Pandeiro Pandeiro Other names Pandeiro, drums Classification hand percussion Playing range High sound of jingles, plus some have a skin with a lower sound. Related instruments Riq, Buben, Dayereh, Daf, Kanjira, Frame drum The pandeiro (Portuguese pronunciation: [pɐ̃ˈdejɾu]) is a type of hand frame drum. There are two important distinctions between a pandeiro and the common tambourine. The tension of the head on the pandeiro can be tuned, allowing the player a choice of high and low notes. Also, the metal jingles (called platinelas in Portuguese) are cupped, creating a crisper, drier and less sustained tone on the pandeiro than on the tambourine. This provides clarity when swift, complex rhythms are played. It is held in one hand, and struck on the head by the other hand to produce the sound. Typical pandeiro patterns are played by alternating the thumb, fingertips, heel, and palm of the hand. A pandeiro can also be shaken to make sound, or one can run a finger along the head to create a "rasp" noise. The pandeiro is used in a number of Brazilian music forms, such as Samba, Choro, Coco, and Capoeira music (see Capoeira songs). The Brazilian pandeiro derives from the pandeireta or pandereta of Spain and Portugal. Some of the best-known pandeiro players today are Paulinho Da Costa, Airto Moreira, Marcos Suzano, Cyro Baptista, and Carlinhos Pandeiro de Ouro. Artists such as Stanton Moore use it non-traditionally by tuning it low to sound like a floor tom with jingles, mounting it on a stand and integrating it into the modern drum kit.

I started playing the drums relatively late, at the age of 21. It would be really hard for me to say what I liked about them and why I was drawn to playing them. I was going to clubs a lot at that time--which was the era of punk--and the drums always seemed to make the music for me. It always looked to me as if the drummer was having the most fun. When I had the chance to sit down at a set of drums I had an immediate affinity with the instrument. Of course, it was some- what hard to coordinate my hands and feet, but the general principle of how to play the instru- ment just seemed so apparent. But what really grabbed me was the depth of sound in each instrument of the drumkit--which means the toms, the bass drum, the snare, the cymbals. What really appealed to me was the fantastic wealth of sound--the overtones, the resonances--eminat- ing from this really simple instrument. OK, a guitar is also really simple--strings vibrating against a body of wood--but I tried to play the guitar and for the life of me I just couldn't make "music" with it--which is to say, with the drums I was keeping a beat pretty soon after starting to play and able to get a sound out of the instrument without having to learn a lot of technique (like I imagined it must be with a saxophone or piano).

I dedicate every performance to increasing multicultural awareness and building relationships of mutual respect and appreciation across cultures." — Ahmad Yousefbeigi Ahmad Yousefbeigi is a dynamic and versatile hand percussionist with over 25 years of performance experience. He is equally fluent in playing the traditional, energetic folk rhythms of his native Kurdistan, as he is versed in contemporary experimental improvisation and progressive world music. In December 2020 Ahmad was proud to perform by invitation in the virtual ADL In Concert Against Hate produced by the Anti-Defamation League. Currently he is a member of a Seattle band called The Crown, which has produced original songs and has several vinyl LPs. Since September 2010 Ahmad has been a founding member of Yesod, an acoustic, ambient improvisational collaboration which has produced more than 35 recording sessions. Born in Sanandaj, Kurdistan, Ahmad’s passion for rhythm was fostered by the musical nature of Kurdish community life. At the age of twelve he began formal study of tonbak, a wooden goblet-shaped drum and Kurdish daf, a large frame drum lined with chains. Upon arriving in the Pacific Northwest Ahmad co-founded several traditional folk music ensembles performing Kurdish, Farsi and Pan-Arabic music: Kamand, Mashriq and Shorouk. In these groups he played a mix of Kurdish and Arabic drums: tonbak, daf, dayre, dohol, riqq, and darbuka. For three years—in 2006, 2008 and 2009—Ahmad produced, organized and performed with Kamand and other guest artists to create a two hour music and dance concert called Norooz—a celebration commemorating the Iranian New Year and the first day of Spring—at Town Hall Seattle.

Its parameters can be modulated at audio rate while being played. The input to the model is an acoustic exci- tation signal which carries spectral information to color the output sound. This makes it suitable for acoustic interfaces – devices which provide excitation signal and control data simultaneously. The presented synthesis model builds up on work done by Miller Puckette[1] and processes audio input from a piezoelectric micro- phone into a nonlinear reverberator. This paper details a strikingly simple but novel approach on how to make use of the momentary DC offset generated by piezoelectric microphones when pressed to simulate the changes in drumhead tension. This technique is especially of interest for interfaces without pressure sensing ca- pabilities. In the design process we pursued an experimental ap- proach rather than a purely mathematical.
