C/ José Gutiérrez Abascal 2, 28006 Madrid, Spain Received 6 June 2007; accepted for publication 9 October 2007 Hypotheses on the taxonomic status of two Bolivian Pristimantis with taxonomic problems are assessed by an integrative taxonomic approach that integrates three independent lines of evidence: external morphology, prezy- gotic reproductive barriers (advertisement calls) and reciprocal monophyly (phylogenetic analyses of partial 16S mtDNA sequences). Central Andean Bolivian populations previously assigned to either P. peruvianus or P. dundeei, and lowland Amazonian populations from southern Peru and northern Bolivia previously considered P. peruvianus do not correspond to these species. Indeed, multivariate analyses of qualitative and quantitative morphological and bioacoustic characters, and phylogenetic analyses support the hypothesis that they represent different, previously unknown, cryptic lineages. They are herein described as new species. The former is a sibling species of P. fenestratus that inhabits the Amazonian and semideciduous forests of the Andean foothills in central Bolivia. The latter is sibling to the Andean species P. danae and is parapatric to it in the Amazonian lowland forests and adjacent foothills of northern Bolivia, southern Peru and adjacent Brazil. Most species of Neotropical frogs, and especially Pristimantis, have been described by using external qualitative morphological characters only. An extended integrative taxonomic approach, as exemplified herein, may lead to the discovery of many other cryptic and sibling lineages that would increase the species numbers of tropical areas. © 2009 The Linnean Society of London, Zoological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2009, 155, 97–122. The Pristimantis lacrimosus species group, with 24 species distributed in the Neotropics, is a group of arbo- real frogs commonly inhabiting bromeliads. Previous studies have claimed the group to be monophyletic but few spe- cies have been included in phylogenetic analyses. In this paper, we included five additional species from the northern Andes in Colombia and tested the monophyly of this phenetic group using genetic data under a Bayesian approach. Our results show that the P. lacrimosus group represents two distant and unrelated clades. Clade “A” is endemic to Colombia while Clade “B” encompasses species distributed in Central America, Ecuador and Peru. For the first time, we reveal the phylogenetic position of P. boulengeri and a new species is described. The new taxon is most closely related to P. brevifrons from southwestern Colombia with a genetic distance of 4.3% for 16S and 10.6% for COI. Our results suggest, one more time, that morphological similarity among species in the most diverse vertebrate genus not necessarily agree with its evolutionary history and that more effort in alpha taxonomy needs to be done in order to understand the tremendous radiation of this lineage in the Neotropics.

C., Noviembre 2008 ABSTRACT Pristimantis (Anura: Strabomantidae) represents an exceptionally diverse group among Neotropical anurans, but the evolutionary relationships among subgeneric groups are poorly known. Using both original and published multilocus DNA sequence data, we developed a novel phylogenetic hypothesis for this genus. Ingroup sampling included 30.9% of the described species (265 individuals from 132 species, of which 156 individuals from 34 species are new data). Genetic data included three mitochondrial (COI, 12S, 16S) and two nuclear markers (Rag-1 and Tyr) for a total of ~4279 base pairs. Phylogenies were inferred using parsimony, maximum likelihood and Bayesian analyses of individual genes and combined data sets. The new phylogenetic hypothesis conflicts with most recognized taxonomic groupings. Within Pristimantis, the peruvianus group was the only group recovered, whereas the "conscipillatus”, “curtipes”, “devillei”, “frater”, “lacrimosus”, “myersi”, “orestes”, “surdus”, and “unistrigatus” were not supported as natural groups. The molecular phylogeny suggests that the colonization of Central America by South American Pristimantis involved perhaps 13 independent events. Our results suggest alternative interpretations of Pristimantis taxonomy, character evolution, and biogeography, topics that now demand more extensive evaluation in future studies. Abstract Three new species of Pristimantis (Lissamphibia, Anura) from montane forests of the Cordillera Yanachaga in Central Peru. We describe three additional new species of Pristimantis from the Cordillera Yanachaga, a part of the Andes in central Peru. Analyses of DNA sequences of the mitochondrial rRNA genes show that one species is a close relative of P. bipunctatus (P. conspicillatus Group), another is a close relative of P. stictogaster (P. peruvianus Group), and the third is related to several species in the P. unistrigatus Group. The first two species are morphologically simi- lar to their closest relatives but occur at lower elevations. Twenty-nine species of Pristimantis and Phrynopus are known from the vicinity of the Cordillera Yanachaga. The number of species, especially of Pristimantis, is high in the humid montane forest in comparison with other sites in humid montane forests in Peru, but the number is lower than on the western slopes of the Andes in Ecuador. Wake, University of California, Berkeley, CA, and approved May 5, 2007 (received for review December 12, 2006) Approximately one-half of all species of amphibians occur in the North America New World tropics, which includes South America, Middle America, and the West Indies. Of those, 27% (801 species) belong to a large assemblage, the eleutherodactyline frogs, which breed out of West Indies water and lay eggs that undergo direct development on land. Their wide distribution and mode of reproduction offer potential for Caribbean Sea resolving questions in evolution, ecology, and conservation. How- Middle ever, progress in all of these fields has been hindered by a poor America understanding of their evolutionary relationships. As a result, most of the species have been placed in a single genus, Eleutherodac- tylus, which is the largest among vertebrates. Our DNA sequence South America analysis of a major fraction of eleutherodactyline diversity re- vealed three large radiations of species with unexpected geo- graphic isolation: a South American Clade (393 sp.), a Caribbean Clade (171 sp.), and a Middle American Clade (111 sp.). Molecular clock analyses reject the prevailing hypothesis that these frogs arose from land connections with North and South America and their subsequent fragmentation in the Late Cretaceous (80–70 Mya). Origin by dispersal, probably over water from South America in the early Cenozoic (47–29 million years ago, Mya), is more likely.
