500th Anniversary Of The - October 29, 2017 Traditional Worship Bulletin: Page 7, Contemporary Worship Bulletin: Page 16

On this day we celebrate the heart of our faith: the gospel of Christ—the good news—that makes us free! We pray that the Holy Spirit would continue to unite the church today in its proclamation and witness to the world. In the waters of we are made one body; we pray for the day that all Christians will also be one at the Lord’s table.

Commemorations for this week… Reformation Day Tuesday, October 31, 2017 By the end of the seventeenth century, many Lutheran churches celebrated a festival commemorating 's posting of the Ninety-five Theses, a summary of abuses in the church of his time. At the heart of the reform movement was the gospel, the good news that it is by grace through faith that we are justified and set free. All Saints Day Wednesday, November 1, 2017 The custom of commemorating all of the saints of the church on a single day goes back at least to the third century. All Saints Day celebrates the baptized people of God, living and dead, who make up the body of Christ. On this day or the following Sunday, many congregations will remember the faithful who have died during the past year. Martín de Porres, renewer of society, died 1639 Friday, November 3, 2017 Martín was the son of a Spanish knight and a freed black slave from Panama. As a lay brother in the Order of Preachers (Dominicans), he engaged in many charitable works in Lima, Peru. He founded an orphanage, a hospital, and a clinic for cats and dogs.

Prelude … “How Great Thou Art” … Boberg/Nevue

Drama 1: Two Christians from Luther’s day are on their way to church, discussing the current unrest due to Luther’s presenting of his 95 Theses. The date is soon after October 31, 1517.

*Opening Prayer...Pastor with Congregation

P In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Ghost. Amen.

C I thank thee, my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, thy dear Son, that thou hast kept me this night from all harm and danger; and I pray thee that thou wouldst keep me this day also from sin and every evil, that all my doings in life may please thee. For into thy hands I commend myself, my body and soul, and all things. Let thy holy angel be with me, that the wicked foe may have no power over me. Amen.

*The Hymn is sung by the congregation to the tune Erhalt Uns, Herr LM:

Lord, keep us steadfast in your Word; curb those who by deceit or sword; Would wrest the kingdom from your Son and bring to nought all he has done.

Lord Jesus Christ, your pow’r make known, for you are Lord of lords alone; Defend your holy Church that we may sing your praise triumphantly.

O Comforter of priceless worth, send peace and unity on earth; Support us in our final strife and lead us out of death to life.

The Anthem…Calvary’s Adult Choir… “A Mighty Fortress Is Our God”… Arr. By David Johnson

Vs. 1-Choir & Congregation Vs. 2-Choir For lo, his doom is sure, A mighty fortress is our God, Vs. 3-Choir & Congregation One little word shall fell him. A bulwark never failing: And though this world, Vs. 4-Choir & Congregation Our helper he amid the flood with devils filled, That word above all earthly Of mortal ills prevailing; Should threaten to undo us; powers, For still our ancient foe We will not fear, No thanks to them, abideth; Doth seek to work us woe; for God hast willed The spirit and the gifts are ours His craft and power are great, His truth to triumph through us; Through him who with us sideth: And, armed with cruel hate, The prince of darkness grim, Let goods and kindred go, On earth is not his equal. We tremble not for him: This mortal life also; His rage we can endure, The body they may kill:

The Old Testament Lesson … Jeremiah 31:31-34 … Lay Reader

“Behold, the days are coming, declares the Lord, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and the house of Judah, not like the covenant that I made with their fathers on the day when I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt, my covenant that they broke, though I was their husband, declares the Lord. For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, declares the Lord: I will put my law with- in them, and I will write it on their hearts. And I will be their God, and they shall be my peo- ple. And no longer shall each one teach his neighbor and each his brother, saying, ‘Know the Lord,’ for they shall all know me, from the least of them to the greatest, declares the Lord. For I will forgive their iniquity, and I will remember their sin no more.”

Drama 3: Luther’s awareness of the importance of God’s Word.

The Second Lesson … Romans 3:19-28 … Lay Reader

Now we know that whatever the law says it speaks to those who are under the law, so that every mouth may be stopped, and the whole world may be held accountable to God. For by works of the law no human being will be justified in his sight, since through the law comes knowledge of sin. But now the righteousness of God has been manifested apart from the law, although the Law and the Prophets bear witness to it—the righteousness of God through faith in Jesus Christ for all who believe. For there is no distinction: for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, and are justified by his grace as a gift, through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus, whom God put forward as a propitiation by his blood, to be received

8

by faith. This was to show God's righteousness, because in his divine forbearance he had passed over former sins. It was to show his righteousness at the present time, so that he might be just and the justifier of the one who has faith in Jesus. Then what becomes of our boast- ing? It is excluded. By what kind of law? By a law of works? No, but by the law of faith. For we hold that one is justified by faith apart from works of the law.

Drama 4: Luther’s realization of salvation by faith in Jesus.

The Gospel Lesson … John 8:31-36… Pastor

So Jesus said to the Jews who had believed him, “If you abide in my word, you are truly my disciples, and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” They answered him, “We are offspring of Abraham and have never been enslaved to anyone. How is it that you say, ‘You will become free’?” Jesus answered them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, everyone who practices sin is a slave to sin. The slave does not remain in the house forever; the son remains forever. So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.

Drama 5: Luther’s reliance of God’s grace above all else, as he stands before the church authorities at the Diet of Worms and says, “I cannot, and will not, recant.”

Creedal Hymn sung by the congregation to the tune Wir Glauben All (metrical) 87 77 (you may remain seated)

We all believe in one true God, Father, Son and Holy Ghost, Ever-present help in need, praised by all the heav’nly host; All he made his love enfolds, all creation he upholds.

We all believe in Jesus Christ, Son of God and Mary’s son, Who descended from his throne and for us salvation won; By whose cross and death are we rescued from all misery.

We all confess the Holy Ghost, who from both in truth proceeds, Who sustains and comforts us in all trials, fears and needs. Blessed, holy Trinity, praise forever be to thee!

9

Hymn of sung by the congregation to the tune Nun Freut Euch 87 87 887: (you may remain seated)

Dear Christians, one and all, rejoice, with exultation springing, And, with united heart and voice and holy rapture singing, Proclaim the wonders God hath done, how his right arm the vict’ry won; Right dearly it hath cost him.

Fast bound in Satan’s chains I lay, death brooded darkly o’er me, Sin was my torment night and day, in sin my mother bore me; Yea, deep and deeper still I fell, life had become a living hell, So firmly sin possessed me.

My own good works availed me naught, no merit they attaining; Free will against God’s judgment fought, dead to all good remaining. My fears increased till sheer despair left naught but death to be my share; The pangs of hell I suffered.

But God beheld my wretched state before the world’s foundation, And, mindful of his mercies great, he planned my soul’s salvation. A Father’s heart he turned to me, sought my redemption fervently: He gave his dearest Treasure.

He spoke to his beloved Son: “’Tis time to have compassion. Then go, bright Jewel of my crown, and bring to man salvation; From sin and sorrow set him free, slay bitter death for him that he May live with thee forever.”

*Sharing the Peace… Pastor with Congregational Response The peace of Christ be with you always. And also with you.

We praise you O God, for Jesus Christ, embodying forgiveness, granting us grace, setting us free, who on the night before he died, took bread, and gave thanks; broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying: Take and eat: this is my body, given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me. Again, after supper, he took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it for all to drink, saying: This cup is the new covenant in my blood, shed for you and for all people for the forgiveness of sin. Do this for the remembrance of me. And so we remember your Word, his presence in this meal around the world, you law, your grace, your freedom. Bless this meal and all those who share it; continue the reformation of your church- es; with the joy of life in your household, mighty Fortress, victorious Champion, powerful Shield, today, tomorrow and forever we praise your name and join their unending hymn: *Sanctus… “Holy, Holy, Holy…” … In Unison … ELW Page 153

P We give thanks to you, almighty Father, as we celebrate the 500th anniversary of the Refor- mation. Help us to see anew this day what an monumental impact Martin Luther’s nailing of the 95 Theses has had on our faith today. Help us to continue to live in the faith grounded in your grace uncovered for us so long ago. O Mighty Fortress, strong Defender,

C Give us grace to continue in your Word.

P Stir in us a desire to know you more and know your Word on a deeper and deeper level, as Martin Luther sought to do. Fill us with the urge to read, mark, learn and inwardly digest all you have to say to us through your Holy Scriptures, and let us never turn away from your messages of undeserved forgiveness and love. O Mighty Fortress, strong Defender,

C Give us grace to continue in your Word.

P Your Word continues to guide and direct us in our relationships with other. Grant us true knowledge from your Word to share with those who are hurting or doubting, that they may find the rest and reassurance they need that you are always with them and you will always care for them. O Mighty Fortress, strong Defender,

C Give us grace to continue in your Word.

P We praise you for the long line of reformers who followed Martin Luther and remained faith- ful to your Word of hope and promise through many difficult times. Give us the same courage and resolve to continue to witness for you and stand firm in the conviction that we are saved only by faith alone, grace alone, and Scripture alone, gifts that can come only from you. O Mighty Fortress, strong Defender,

C Give us grace to continue in your Word.

P Open our eyes to see opportunities be in your Word around the kitchen table, around the neighborhood with friends and in your holy house. Keep us available to talk to others who are

12

seeking to know more from your Word that we may be a source of strength and encourage- ment in the Gospel for them. O Mighty Fortress, strong Defender, C Give us grace to continue in your Word.

P Let us rejoice in the freedom we have to worship you and to participate in your services of the Word in your house of worship. Give us voices to sing and words to proclaim in the midst of brothers and sisters in the faith, and allow us to be warm and welcoming to all who enter this place for the first time. O Mighty Fortress, strong Defender,

C Give us grace to continue in your Word.

P Thank you for the various roles you have given us in this Church and this world. Help us to live out our callings in ways that please you and that declare to those around us the power of the Word that is at work in our words and deeds. Let us value the work of all those in the Church, no matter what their position. O Mighty Fortress, strong Defender,

C Give us grace to continue in your Word.

P Remain in us as we face trials and tribulations of any kind. Especially we pray this day for ... Help us to see that no matter what we are experiencing, your love for us continues and your promise of salvation is never forgotten or abandoned. Keep our eyes ever focused on the coming kingdom and the life that awaits us there with you. O Mighty Fortress, strong De- fender,

C Give us grace to continue in your Word.

P Continue to keep reforming, reshaping and renewing us to become more and more like your Son. Let us never grow complacent or lethargic is expanding the reach of your Word to all nations, communities and homes. Allow us to see that, like Martin Luther, we can do no oth- er when it comes to standing up for what we believe. May our faith in your salvation keep driving us forward in our efforts to be your voice of certain hope. O Mighty Fortress, strong Defender,

C Give us grace to continue in thy Word.

P Amen.

*The Confession is sung by the congregation to the tune Vater Unser 88 88 88:

13

Forgive our sins, Lord, we implore, remove from us their burden sore, As we their trespasses forgive who by offenses us do grieve. Thus let us dwell in charity and serve our brother willingly.

*The Absolution is spoken by the pastor:

I have the privilege of sharing with you the very Good News that Luther brought to light in the Reformation: Your sins are forgiven, not because of anything you have done, but because of what Christ did for you on the cross and through the empty tomb. The power of sin has been removed for you forever and you are free to live a new life in Christ. Be blessed by his peace and love. Amen.

*The Response is sung by the congregation to the tune Vater Unser 88 88 88:

Amen, that is, so shall it be. Confirm our faith and hope in thee That we may doubt not, but believe what here we ask we shall receive. Thus in thy name and at thy word we say: Amen. Oh, hear us, Lord!

*Farewell and God Speed… Pastor… Mark, Amber, Carmen, Mariah and Tess Glover

*The Benediction is spoken by the pastor: Now continue in the Word of the Lord. The Lord bless you and keep you. The Lord make his face to shine upon you and be gracious to you. The Lord lift up his countenance upon you and give you peace. Amen.

*The Closing Hymn … “The Church’s One Foundation” … Vs. 1 & 5… ELW Hymn #654

“A Mighty Fortress” … Nockels, Nockels, Brown & Robertson Drama 2: Luther, in the monastery, struggles with his faith

For there is no distinction: for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, and are justified by his grace as a gift, through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus, whom God put forward as a propitiation by his blood, to be received by faith. This was to show God's righteousness, because in his divine forbearance he had passed over former sins. It was to show his righteousness at the present time, so that he might be just and the justifier of the one who has faith in Jesus. Then what becomes of our boasting? It is excluded. By what kind of law? By a law of works? No, but by the law of

17

faith.

Amen.

*The Response is spoken by the congregation :

Amen, that is, so shall it be. Confirm our faith and hope in thee That we may doubt not, but believe what here we ask we shall receive. Thus in thy name and at thy word we say: Amen. Oh, hear us, Lord!
