[email protected] Abstract The focus of this article is the rock opera Lāčplēsis (Bearslayer, 1988, text by Māra Zālīte, music by Zigmars Liepiņš), which at the end of the 1980s in Latvia gained both significant artistic as well as political resonance; such significance is still reflected in the cultural memory of society. The article offers the opportunity to gain a deeper familiarity withLāčplēsis as a symbolic hero in Latvian culture prior to the premiere of the rock opera in 1988 and provides an analysis of Lāčplēsis’s creation, the characteristics of the text and music stylistics, its socio-political resonance, and its place in the historical renewal of state independence and democracy. The article also highlights the reception ofLāčplēsis as an historically significant event in Latvian society’s cultural memory of the last 30 years. This study uses multiple research methods: the clarification of past events through primary sources, periodicals and witness testimony, and comparison and overall generalization of facts and interpretations.
