    From Jackson to Richmond: How Radical Mayors Left Their Mark Well before the Trump era, U.S. presidents from both major parties failed to address urban problems or made them worse. Governors, members of Congress, and state legislators didn’t perform much better. So the difficult job of fighting poverty, inequality, and environmental degradation shifted to the municipal level, where activist mayors have tried to mobilize the limited resources of local government on behalf of neglected causes and constituents. When the U.S. Conference of Mayors came to San Francisco several years ago, our local paper, the Chronicle, congratulated its members for “shaking up the national agenda” by “tackling issues like climate change, education and police brutality.” In his keynote address to the group, then-President Barack Obama proclaimed that: “Mayors get the job done. It’s not sufficient to blather on—you actually have to do something.” Under Obama’s successor, many municipal leaders—even some pretty crummy ones—have joined “the resistance” to federal attacks on immigrants, union members, or the urban poor. But, in cities across the country, powerful private interests and the local politicians they support still thwart progressive policy initiatives. To overcome corporate opposition and “get the job done,” left- leaning mayors or city councilors must take a nontraditional approach to running for and holding office, as Socialist Alternative leader Kshama Sawant has done in Seattle. Two new books about making change in smaller cities are worthy of close study by anyone hoping to push their own city hall in a similar left-wing direction.

Next, my dissertation studies how social movement participation impacts activists’ identities and mores through the prism of “lifestyle politics,” which ensures that activists’ humanity remains central to their story. I define lifestyle politics as the everyday lived practice of political ideology. It is the constant interpretation, contestation, negotiation, and reproduction of ideas shared between activists, and it elucidates the significance of mundane interactions between each individual and the ideas on which they base the pursuit of their group’s goals.

She shared with us their experience caring for the poorest of the poor and the recognition that provision of health care and work to promote healthy behaviors is not enough. Health researchers believe that genes, biology, and health behaviors together account for about 25% of population health; medical care accounts for about 20%; and social determinants of health-things like: early childhood development; How much education a person obtains; employment; food security; access to health services; housing status; income; and discrimination and social support. Each listening session is fascinating building and reinforcing the case that we need to invest in people and our community.

Chapel Hill 2017 Approved by: Altha Cravey Alvaro Reyes Scott Kirsch Sara Smith Akinyele Umoja © 2017 Willie Jamaal Wright ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ii ABSTRACT Willie Jamaal Wright: “Free the Land!”: Exploring the Spatial and Political Legacies of the Republic of New Afrika in Detroit and Jackson (Under the direction of Altha Cravey & Alvaro Reyes) The Provisional Government of the Republic of New Afrika is a Black revolutionary nationalist provisional government formed in Detroit, Michigan, in the wake of the city’s 1967 rebellion. Its goal is to establish a nation-state for New Afrikans in five states (LA, MS, AL, GA, SC) among the former Black Belt. Scholars such as Christian Davenport suggest—using the RNA as an exemplar—that “repression kills social movement organizations.” Grounded in Black geographies and a Black spatial imaginary this presentation will argue that such portrayals erase the ways in which black political formations persist in a world of tremendous anti-black violence. My findings indicate that the RNA lives, and that due to instances of police oppression and the natural maturation of political thought and praxis, its initial objectives morphed into new spatial and political forms. This research study is based on 12 months of multi-site fieldwork conducted in Detroit, Michigan and Jackson, Mississippi, semi-structured interviews, participant observation and archival methods.
