From Tupelo to Memphis to New York, Las Vegas, and countless points between, the journey explores the rise and fall of Elvis as a metaphor for the country he left behind. What emerges is a visionary portrait of the state of the American dream and a penetrating look at how the hell we got here. The King premieres on Independent Lens Monday, January 28, 2019, 9:00-10:30PM ET (check local listings) on PBS. [mellow ambient music plays] CHERYL: Since this is a story-based podcast, I don’t have a lot of interviews. This interview is a rebroadcast from the old podcast from 2017 recorded by Skype. It’s been edited just a bit for length. Talila “TL” Lewis has been named a White House Champion of Change and was also named one of the Top 30 Thinkers Under 30 by Pacific Standard in 2015. Talila is an attorney-organizer and visiting professor at Rochester Institute of Technology and National Technical Institute for the Deaf who founded and works with the all-volunteer organization HEARD, which stands for Helping Educate to Advance the Rights of Deaf communities. HEARD focuses on correcting and preventing deaf wrongful convictions, ending abuse of incarcerated people with disabilities; decreasing recidivism rates for deaf returned citizens; and increasing representation of deaf people in professions that can counter mass incarceration and end the attendant school to prison pipeline. Talila created the only national database of deaf incarcerated individuals. This is something the jails and prisons aren’t tracking themselves. Talila also maintains contact with hundreds of deaf incarcerated individuals. TL also leads intersectional campaigns that advance the rights of multiply-marginalized people, including the #DeafInPrison Campaign, the Deaf Prisoner Phone Justice Campaign, and the American Civil Liberties Union’s “Know Your Deaf Rights” Campaign. A Love Letter to Black Mothers
BERGAMO KEYNOTE, 2019 A Love Letter to Black Mothers NICHOLE A. GUILLORY Kennesaw State University A Prelude. STAYED AWAY FROM THE BERGAMO CONFERENCE on Curriculum Theory and I Classroom Practice for nearly 20 years because I have always had a complicated relationship with curriculum theory. For many years, the field has provided me the intellectual space to grapple with the interdisciplinary questions I want to explore about knowledge, power, and identity. Only in curriculum theory is the possibility of my academic career possible. I began writing about the public pedagogies of Black women rappers Missy Elliott, Lil Kim, and Eve in the early 2000s. Then, I took my first tenure-track position and shifted to writing about the plantation politics of predominantly white higher education spaces. Now, 20 years later, my writing is focused primarily on Black mothering. This trajectory is possible because of other Black women curriculum theorists in the space. I want to thank two sister theorists in particular for paving a way for all of us in this field, but especially me. Without Denise Taliaferro-Baszile, my work would not have been published or presented in as many places as it has been. Her work is simultaneously inspirational and aspirational for so many of us because it always manages to prompt us toward new and more complicated thinking. I want to thank also Kirsten Edwards, who has created opportunities for me to publish and present and whose work is as brilliant as it is beautifully written. She represents the Black feminist future of Afro-futurist thinking. I owe both of these women a great debt, and they will always be examples of how to pay forward all that I have been given. -

She will also meet with Black women students for an informal breakfast Q&A, serving as a role model of Black, female excellence and providing a unique opportunity for students to engage with a leading scholar in an intimate setting. Finally, in an evening lecture and book signing open to all of campus and the public, and free to attend, Dr. McMillan Cottom will speak about her recent collection, THICK: and Other Essays, a Black women’s cultural bible which intertwines the personal, social, and political. Success of this project will be measured by attendance at each event and level of speaker/audience interaction. This proposal connects to several important goals of the University and of Women of Excellence. Bringing Dr. McMillan Cottom to campus will support Xavier’s goal to promote diversity education, scholarship, and culturally responsive teaching, and uphold the social justice ethos at the heart of our Jesuit values. These events will bring together constituent groups—students, alumni, faculty, staff, and community members—in critical conversations about gender and race and also honor and extend the legacies of women and women of color who have been historically underrepresented at Xavier, and in our communities and world. In addition, hosting such a prominent scholar as Dr. McMillan Cottom will enhance the reputation of Xavier University as a leader on issues of gender, racial, and class diversity. Pezzullo ABSTRACT This dissertation explores the rhetorical and spatiotemporal relationships between food politics and gentrification in the contemporary U.S. developing city foodscape. Specifically, I explore a seemingly innocent, yet incredibly powerful key term for the food movement today: “access.” The concern over adequate food access for the food insecure has become a national conversation, as everyone from governments to corporations, non-profits to grassroots advocates, have organized interventions to bring healthy food to those most in need. In rapidly developing cities, however, these politics have become particularly complicated, as new food amenities often index or contribute to gentrification, including the displacement of the very people supposedly targeted for increased food access. -

The Senior Pride Network (Toronto) is an association of individuals and organizations committed to promoting appropriate services and a positive, caring environment for elders, seniors and older persons who identify as 2 Spirit, lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, transsexual, queer, intersex and other (2SLGBTTQI+). We envision a series of communities of 2SLGBTTQI+ elders, seniors and older persons that are respectful, affirming, supportive, safe and healthy. The Senior Pride Network (Toronto) asserts and advocates for the human, economic, social and cultural rights of 2SLGBTTQI+ elders, seniors and older persons. We seek to eradicate all forms of oppression including homophobia, heterosexism, lesbophobia, transphobia, biphobia, sexism, cissexism, racism, antisemitism, settler colonialism, xenophobia, islamophobia, ableism and ageism. We demand the right of all 2SLGBTTQI+ elders, seniors and older persons to live their lives free from discrimination, harassment, reprisal, bullying, intimidation, victimization, stigmatization, silencing, being marginalized or being made invisible. 2SLGBTTQI+ Elders, Seniors and Older Persons and Ontario’s Seniors Strategy 2SLGBTTQI+ elders, seniors and older persons face a number of issues that have impacted their lived experiences and may have negatively affected their mental or physical health, their financial and housing circumstances and their overall social well-being. Gaining an understanding of those issues and positively addressing them are necessary to developing and implementing an inclusive and effective Ontario’s Seniors Strategy.
